BEYOND MIRACLES: THE DISCOVERYOF THE UNIFIED FIELD AND ITSPRACTICAL APPLICATIONS TOPREVENT CRIME TERRORISM ANDINTERNATIONAL CONFLICTby John Hagelin, Ph.D.ABSTRACTThe lawst, most profound discoveries of quantum physics provide deep insight into ultimate reality, andhow we create our own day-to-day reality. \ ( e must now harness this cuning-edge knowledge to createa peaceful, harmoniolls, more enlightened world. For this purpose, intellectual discllssion is not enough.Only direct, repeatahle experience of ultimate reality can create the deep, lasting transformations in theindividual and sockty so urgently needed today.Recent breakthroughs in quantum physics reveal the ultimate reality: the unified field -the field ofuniversal intelligence at the hasis of mind and matter. The unified field is the fountainhead of all thelaws of nature-the source of all the order displayed throughout the vast cosmos.Human awareness can directly experience and access this field of universal intelligence using advancedmeditation techniques derived from the ancient Vedic wisdom. This fundamental experience of pureconsciousness represents a fourth major state of consciousness, distinct from waking. dreaming and deepsleep. In this higher state of consciousness, human awareness becomes aligned with cosmic intelligence:thoughts and actions become powerfully dfective-life supporting and globally enriching. Such enlightened individuals are peacemakers by nawre. radiating peace and harmony throughout their environment.New research reveals that enlighrenment, the full developmcnr of human potential. is our birthright-aspontaneous byproduct of integrated brain functioning. New research also reveals the existence of longrange field effects of consciollsness generated through collective meditation. More than 50 studies haveshown that such field effects of consciousness have a profound impact on society as a whole, defusingacute socieral stress. violence and conflict, and providing a practical fi)undation for pt'rmanent world peace.\ (, e are thus on the threshold of a global transfilrmation to a post-dual, unified field-bast-d civilization ofaffluence and peace based on the knowledge, and direct experience, of the core unity of lite in higherstates of consciousness.

T oday I would like t address severalissues: What is consciousness? Andwhat are higher states of consciousness? What are the limits of hum an potential? What is enlightenment? What are fieldeffects of consciousness from a scientificperspective and their potential application toworld peace? In this co ntext, we re alsogoing to talk a little bit about space-timewormholes and superstring theory. And during the question-and-answer period,if not before, I will be happy also to go intothe phenomenon known as subtle bodies, orthought bodies- what theyre made of and

what their purpose is . And if we have a lotof extra time, which I doubt we will , we canalso talk about ze ro-point motion, a wel1-understood scientific phenomenon thattod ay has new significance, more than everbefore, because this zero-point motion ofthe unified field is actually fueling theexponentially accelerating expansion of theunIverse. These are the points I ll cover in the contextof this talk. And to understand consciousness in a scientific way we have t refreshourselves a bit about the modern scientificunderstanding of the world particularly

regarding the discovery of the unified field. This first chart Figure 1 attempts tosummarize, in a single glance, threehundred years of modern scientific research. And even if you aren't able to read everysingle detail on the chan, what I'd like y uto see is the overall structure of the universerepresented here-the hierarchical structureof natural law.

W hat you see at the foundation of thischart is the discovery of the unifiedfield, which is the unified source of thediversified universe, the source of all thelaws of nature governing life at every levelof the universe. And by every level I meanthat the structure of the universe is superficially diverse, as shown at the top of thischart a t the macroscopic, observable, classical level of physics-and fundamentally unified at the core foundation ofphysics of the universe.Modern science for the last fifty years hasbeen all about exploring deeper levels ofnature's functioning-from the macroscopicto the microscopic, from the diversified tothe progressively more unified. t beganwith the exploration of the molecular leveland the development of chemistry, and thenthe atomic nucleus and nuclear physics, andthen the discovery of the subnuclear levelsof nature's functioning-the quark andlepton-leading to the Nobel Prize-winningelectromagnetic unified theory. This theoryrevealed that the superficially diverseelectromagnetic and radioactive forces arefundamentally one, when examined at alevel of nature's functioning about 100

times smaller than the nuclear dimension. And similarly, if you go down this chartnear the bottom, you can see that perhapsthree of the four fundamental forces ofnature-the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces-are ultimately united as oneunified force field. That was my own earlycontribution to this unifying effort. Andthen, over the last ten or twelve years, wehave seen the superunification of all thefundamental forces of nature and theparticles on which they act-the so-calledbosons or force fields, and the fermions ormatter fields. These fields today areultimately understood as unifiedcomponents of one indivisible wholeness ofthe unified field, revealing the unifiedsource of the diversified universe at thesubnuclear scale-actual ly a million, million, million times smaller than theatomic nucleus-thereby fulfilling Einstein'slifelong quest to discover the unified sourceof the diversified universe. And thisdiscovery is the crowning achievement offifty years of advanced research in quantumgravity theory.I want t emphasize with the next chartFigure 2) that this discovery is not a

philosophical development; it's really arigorous mathematical development. Therigorous mathematical equation governingthis unified field has been revealed in thecontext of superstring theory and so-calledM theory. And that one compact superformula is shown at the top of this chart, which is really a very concise compactmathematical equation from which unfoldsthe increasing diversifIed structure of thelaws of nature-the grand unified, and the

Figllre 3 The Unified Field Li( s at the Basis o COl1Scioll me < < /nd M /tterIt s very important. I m going to try andjustify this statement very briefly for you .lt s a fact that this field is the ultimate originof consciousness. The basic real it) ofconsciousness is extremel), important in theunderstanding of what consciousness is andwhat all the different phenomena ofconSCIOllsness are.So why don't we call the unified field a fieldof consciousness? We know it s a nonmaterial field . We learned this fact at thebeginning of quantum mechanics, learnedit again in quantum field theory, andlearned it from experiments that confirmed

what's called the non-local nature ofreality -that there is no material reality,no localized material existence, at thesubnuclear level. So just from thequalities of the unified field, we also caneasily see its a field of intelligence. Whyintelligence? Because it s the source of allthe laws of nature. And what are the lawsof nature? The principles of order andintelligence that govern the universe. So this unified field is a field of intelli-gence, because it s the fountainhead of allthe laws of nature, which are the principles of intelligence governing the universe.

And because it's the fountainhead of allthese intelligent principles maintainingorder throughout the universe, it must bethe concentrated field of intelligence innature. Bur it's not inert intelligence, it'snot static intelligence, it's not lifeless intelligence. It's dynamic intelligence. The quantum principle or uncertaintyprinciple, which I'm sure you've heard of,guarantees increasing dynamism atfundamental scales. What does that mean?It means that nuclear power is morepowerful than chemical energy only becausethe nucleus is a million times smaller, andhence a million times more fundamentaland a million times more powerful, than thechemical level, the molecular leveL Sowhen you move from molecular to nuclearto su bn uclear levels, the characteristicdynamism of nature increase. And we'll seelater that the dynamism at this level of theunified field is so intense that even spacetime itself begins to boil. This boiling ofspace-time geometry is just a symptom ofthe incredible energy densiry of the unifiedfield. So it's not static intelligence: it'sdynamic intelligence. And it's self aware.A very important properry of consciousnessthat I'm going to spend a momentexplaining is how the unified field is self:'aware-and how the electromagnetic field, for example, isn't. Light doesn't interact withlight. Light isn't aware of itself. Twoflashlight beams-you can do this experiment safely at home-two flashlight beamswill pass right through each other with nointeraction, no scattering, no awareness ofeach other's presence. Light is not aware oflight. But the unified field, as you can see

at the basis of our unified field chart, ispurely self-interacting. t interacts withitself alone. Why? Because there is nothingelse down there for the unified field tointeract with. And it's a good thing thatthe unified field interacts with itself, isaware of itself, responds dynamically to itsown presence-because this dynamic selfinteraction of the unified field is responsiblefor the emergence of the universe, which isa good thing.

so, what are the properties of the unifiedfield? We could be much more rigorousabout it, but I think this summary is goodenough: it's an infinitely dynamic, nonmaterial field of self-aware, self-interactingintelligence. Hint: dynamic self-awareintelligence is consciousness. So this is theorigin of consciousness. Any consciousphenomenon in the universe ultimately isconscious because of this conscious foundation to nature. And this idea is very foreignto a materials scientist, because after all, physicists spent 300 years studying billiardballs. Prior to the microscope, and theelectron microscope, and the particleaccelerators, all we could see was theclassical world of matter around us Well, after 300 years of billiard-ball mechanicsand celestial mechanics, it's easy to see whyyou would consider the universe as e -as inert matter. And since this idea iscompletely ingrained in the education ofscientists-that the universe is composed ofdead matter, and that life, if it exists at all,and consciousness, if it exists at all, issomething that is purely interior to thebrain of the physicist or mathematician orthe human being-then it's surprising to tell

such a person, No, the universe is awake;in fact, it s pure wakefulness-pureconsciousness at its source. And the deeperyou go i f you scratch beneath the surfaceof existence, and you just keep scratchingto the molecular, atomic, nuclear, andsubnuclear levels-the more the qualities ofconsciousness come alive. And eventually,at these deeper levels of elementary particlephysics and beyond, it's just a pure play anddisplay of infinitely dynamic intelligence. And the unified field is absolutely pureintelligence, pure consciousness.

So in the old days, consciousness wasconsidered to be a fluke of the universewe were somehow just a fluke in anoverwhelmingly dead universe. And nowthe situation has really changed: matter isthe fluke in an overwhelmingly consciousuniverse. Matter, the world of classicalphysics, is just the tip, the observable tip,of an immense unseen quantum mechanicaliceberg of the molecular, atomic, nuclear, and subnuclear levels of creation. Soconsciousness is fundamental in nature. fyou don t see it, it's because you're notscratching deeply enough beneath thesurface inertia of life. Now meditation throughout the ages-ifproperly understood and properlypracticed-is a technique, as shown in thischart, to explore deeper levels of mind, deeper levels of human existence, finer levelsof human intelligence. And those levelscorrespond to deeper levels of intelligencein nature. In other words, we are part ofnature. Human beings have a structure atthe macroscopic, microscopic, cellular,

atomic, nuclear, and subnuclear levels. Andhuman awareness is so amazingly flexiblethat, with a little bit of training, it canprobe, can explore, and can experiencedeeper levels of human nature, finer levelsof thought, finer levels of consciousness, culminating in the direct experience of theunified field at the basis of the mind-theunified field of pure, self-aware consciousness, unbounded universal consciousness, atthe basis of mind and matter.

W hat's amazing about this timelessexperience is that it has now becomethe intensive focus of modern experimentalresearch. For example, this experience isnow understood or believed t be a fourthstate of consciousness, different fromwaking, dreaming, or sleeping. Let me pointout first that this experience of the fourthstate of consciousness is obviously a veryspecial feature of the human brain-that itcan experience the unified field. s far asI can tell, gerbils, dogs, and cats don't havei t not quite. This ability of the humanbrain to fathom such fundamental levels ofexistence has to do with the detailedarchitecture of the human brain andnervous system.1 won't go into this understanding in greatdetail here, bur the structure of the humanbrain mirrors the structure of the unifiedfield. The structure of the unified field inmodern scientific terms is a set of reverberations-the unity of diversified fluctuations.Let me explain that statement. Theelementary particles and forces that fill theuniverse today-quarks, electrons, photons,gravitons-these are just the vibrational

states of the unified field. Think of it ifyou wish as little rubber nd s -superstrings- and superstrings , like rubberbands, can vibrate in differem ways. Somecan vibrate to the left, maybe some to theright; some may be vibrating like this , andothers may be vibrating like thar. You canmathematically enumerate the vibrationalSt a tes of the supers t r ing-and 10 andbehold those states correspond to thedifferent elememary particles: the photonthe electron, the quark. So all the particles in the universe, whichare the components of the unified field, are

just the differenr vibrational frequencies ofthe unified field. And there are 192 of thesefundamemal frequencies of the unified field:the so-called left-moving and right-movingvibra tional degree s of freedom of theheterotic string-the vibrational states ofthe unified field . The elememary particlesand the forces of nature are simply thosevibrational modes in the f ield-nothingmore. They are nonm aterial-just soundjust vibration .Well , the human brain is de s igned toreverberate in exactly the same way Figure4) The brain and central nervous system

Figure 5. Global Bmiml't/l!e (EEG) Coherence During Fxperimce of theUllified Field in the MeditluirJe ";tateconsist of 192 nerve endings-192ascending and descending reticularformations-the gateways to consciousness. And this 192-fold structure of the brain andcentral nervous system is designed, in asense, to resonate in the 192-fold structureor reverberant frequencies of the unifiedfield. So the human brain is not anaccident. It s as if we have been engineeredby the creator, if you wish, to experiencethis universal consciousness, this unifiedsource of the diversified universe.Enough on that. But this experience, thisstate of consciousness, is now considered tobe a fourth major state of consciousness, distinct from waking, dreaming. or deepsleep. t has its own physiological characteristics and subjective characteristics.

Subjectively t S a pure unboundedabstract, silent ocean of consciousnessawareness wide awake within its own nature, not experiencing anything: no object, nothought no mood no emotion justabstract, absolute, universal contentment. When the brain is having this experience ofunbounded awareness the electricalfunctioning of the brain, the firing of theneurons, is distinctly changed. (Figure 5 Inthis next chart what you see in therepresentations of brains on the left andright are, firstly, dots that simply indicatethe location of electrodes on the scalp. These electrodes have been positioned tomeasure the electrical activity of the brain, the firing of the neurons. On the left isthe electrical brainwave activity of a person

in normal waking consciousness-agitated,waking, stressed consciousness-and theconnections among these dots, across thebrain, are minimal. On the right is theelectrical brainwave activity of an individualexperiencing this pure consciousness statethe unified field-and what you see are barsconnecting all these dots. Those barsindicate correlation between the electricalactivities in different regions in the brain, meaning that the brain is functioningcoheren tly, synchrono usly-integra tedfunctioning of the brain. The righthemisphere of the brain, the left hemisphereof the brain, the frontal and occipital lobesof the brain and the temporal and parietallobes of the brain: the whole brain isfunctioning in concert n a highlyintegrated way. The very isolated andfragmented mental activity of localizedthought and localized perception asindicated on the left, involves only a smallsliver of the brain. But during the experience of unbounded awareness, as shown onthe right, the whole brain is functioning asa whole And integrated brain functioningmeans expansion of awareness, expansion ofcomprehension to be global to beuniversal, to be cosmic. So human awareness can directly experiencethe unified field. And let me just pause hereto say that this finding has more thanphilosophical interest. It's an extraordinarybreakthrough in the field of humanpotential-the discovery that this meditative state. which has been with usthroughout the ages, is of tremendoussignificance to the development of thebrain. Why? (Figure 6) Because this so-

called global EEG coherence, this integrative functioning of the brain, correlatesscientifically with increased intelligence, rising IQ increased creativity, improvedmemory concept learning improvedacademic performance enhanced moralreasoning, increased psychological stabilityand emotional maturity, increased alertness, faster reaction time. Everything good aboutthe brain depends on its orderlyfunctioning. And today orderly brainfunctioning can be developed systematicallyin anyone of any age.IQ for example, as this next chart shows(Figure 7), can go up longitudinally nadults, as has now been shown in manypublished studies in refereed scientificjournals. And this finding is amazing, reallybecause the whole story of human potentialhas been an extremely bleak one.

he common understanding today isthat intelligence peaks in late adolescence and then begins to decline, certainly

by the age of thirty. There's a precipitousdecline in raw intelligence, with a simultaneous shrinking of the gray matter of thebrain. And we tell our children that wemake up for this loss in raw intelligence asadults with our experience, our maturity, and our better judgment. so that ourchildren will listen to us. But this wholeconcept of the deteriorating brain isobsolete, and it's frankly barbaric. And itis fortu lately obsolete, because now weknow that the brain is so plastic somalleable, that it is capable of forging newconnections and learning new thingsthroughout life. But the story with the

blood flow in the brain, the metabolism ofthe brain-looks like the image on the rightof this chart.

W ell, fortunately, balanced brainfunctioning can easily be restoredtoday, even in criminal offenders. Even inmaximum security prisons, just exposingthe individual mind to the experience of itsown unbounded nature, the universalnature of consciousness, engages the totalbrain and develops the brain hoI istically, leading to integrated brain functioning. This is extraordinary, because functionalholes in the brain typically cluster in thecritical prefrontal cortex, as shown at thetop of the image on the right. This area, the prefrontal cortex, corresponds to the so-called higher brain, the CEO of the brain. The higher brain is responsible for all of ourhigher human functions: planning, judgment, moral reasoning, leadership. When the higher brain is underdeveloped,we are left with our more primitive, impulsive, aggressive, violent behaviors. So the prefrontal cortex is a critical rationalfilter against primitive, impulsive, violentbehavior. When the higher brain isunderdeveloped, as it is today throughoutsociety, we find ourselves living in a preado-lescent society. If you have any doubts thatwe are living in an preadolescent society, where violence and impulsive, shortsightedbehavior are the norm, take a look aroundyou-particularly in the areas of society thatare most stressed. Because under stress, theprefrontal cortex shuts down-and underchronic stress, it shurs down chronically, and fails to develop normally.

So it s amazing that we have today thepossibility now, through meditation, of asimple solution-absolurely simple, blissful, universally applicable, and easily practiced. There are meditation techniques likeTranscendental Meditation that are so easyand so effective that within a couple ofmonths, even among maximum securityfelons, restoration of normal brai nfunctioning quickly results. And whenthese inmates are released from jail, researchshows that they do not return to jail. Sowe re talking about a very importantdevelopmental tool here, which has beencompletely overlooked in educationtoday-until now.

ll talk more about this point later, butright now I want to go into field effects

of consciousness-an idea that wouldprobably be surprising for most people butprobably not for this group--and how wecan use the field effects of consciousness toeven create world peace. How? By defusingsocial stress, religious, ethnic, politicaltensions, and ethnic violence, whilepromoting global unity. First let me talkabout this in a very commonsense way Andthen I m going to take it t the next level.Violent crime, terrorism, and even openwarfare are manifestations of acure socialstress. Everyone in the field of conflictresolution acknowledges that the first stagein the emergence of war is mounringtensions among rival factions in criticalhotspots throughout the world, like theMiddle East. When these ethnic andpolitical tensions reach the boiling point, they inevitably erupt as social violence. An

act of violence always results in a retaliatoryaCt, and then you re in a situation ofescalating violence, leading to terrorism andwar. If you could neutralize those mountingtensions, both individually and societally, you could prevent the emergence of suchbehavior fueled by stress: crime, violence,anti-social behavior, even terrorism and war.And today, meditation is the best-knownapproach for reducing stress. Thousands ofdoctors prescribe meditation rourinely nowas the most effective, non-pharmacologicalapproach to reducing stress and preventingthe deleterious effects of stress on hearthealth and human behavior. So if

individual meditation can reduce individualstress, the societal application of meditationcan certainly reduce societal stress. There sno miracle really-no magic in thar.Bur what is magical, if anything, is theextraordinary power of this approach . Thisphoto shows a relative handful of individuals who garhered together in Washington,D.C., in rhe slimmer of 1993, as we heardabout brieAy from Beverly [RubikJ a fewmoments ago. (Figure 9) This group andmany, many others like them in differentpans of the world have all been the subjectsof very rigorous scientific research. And theresearch has shown that group practice ofmeditation by such a group of individuals-

of these experiments, summarized in thischart, had a highly statistically significanteffect on progress towards peace, theprevention of war deaths, and so for thabout an 80 reduction in war intensityduring these seven assemblies, as comparedto the control days or non-experimentalperiod-the increasing conflict shown onthe far left of this chart. Everyone of thesestudies was highly statistically significantscientifically, but when you put themtogether and you combine the statistics, thelikelihood that this reduction of socialconflict was simply a statistical fluke, ahappenstance phenomenon, is less that 1part in 10 1J one part in 10 millionmillion million. This finding makes thisphenomenon of reduced war and reducedsocial conflict on the basis of group medita-tion the most thoroughly studied and mostrigorously established of any phenomenonin the history of social science.so it is a scientific fact today that groupmeditation-properly done, in anappropriately sized group, using veryspecific techniques that give easy and directexperience of the unified field-wil lrepeated and dramatically reduce war. What an incredible tool-what a powerfulmessage of hope for humankind.I would like to spend the rest of my timetoday looking in greater detail at themechanisms of peace that are generated bythe collective practice of meditation. This iswhere it really gets interesting from a physicalperspective. How can it be that a group ofthis size can influence the behavior of ] .5, 23 million people in the vicinity of

Washington, D.C.? What is the power ofgroup meditation? How does it work? Whatis the power of collective consciousness?Well, firstly, there is a very simple principlethat I think we all can understand, and thatis the principle of constructive interference.Let me take the simple example of threeloudspeakers-although you could use anynumber. (Figure 13) In this next slide, onthe left, we see three loudspeakers in closephysical proximity. Those threeloudspeakers are radiating the same soundplaying the same music. That means thosethree waves will add together into one bigcoherent wave, three times as high as asingle wave. But the power in a wave growsnot as the height, but as the square of theheight. So three loudspeakers will actuallyproduce nine times the sound of a singleloudspeaker-three squared is nine-if theloudspeakers are in close physical proximityand radiating coherently. And this principleis not only true for loudspeakers: it s auniversal factor, a universal principle ofwave behavior. So if you have a thousandmeditators in a group- in the GoldenDomes of Maharishi University, forexample, in close physical proximity-theywill produce the influence of peace, positivity, and coherence equivalent to amillion individual meditators. A thousandsquared is a million meditators, practicingindividually. This is an extraordinary result, but an inevitable result. No matter whattheory you use to describe this, you comeup with the same answer, the same result.

What are the long-rangemechanisms of social interaction? Howdoes this spreading of EEG coherence takeplace?Well there are actually many ways we affectone other. Inevitably, we affect each other.e are living in a very closely knit society.Everyone is connected today via the media, the Internet, the cell phone. No man isan island is an old expression that has neverbeen more true than it is today. Inevitably,we each have a spillover effect. WeinAuence our family, our loved ones, ourwork colleagues, and, if enough people areinvolved, the atmosphere of a college, thewhole atmosphere of a city, the atmosphereof a country. How we affect one another isin the details. (Figure 14)This next chart shows various familiar andunfamiliar mechanisms through which weaffect one another. O f course, there's

physical contact. It's a short-range interaction, but very effective. And then there'sverbal communication, which is sort of amedium-range inAuence. It extends maybe20, 50, 100 feet. There are also visual cues:for example, an obscene gesture at a trafficjam. It carries an influence-a subtleinAuence, but you certainly feel it. Peoplerespond to it: they carry that anger withthem to work or wherever. These are allclassical means of communication, based onclassical physics. There's also the telephone, the Internet, the radio, all based on classicalphysics. But at deeper levels of human existence, thequantum mechanical levels, there are evenmore powerful methods of long-rangecommunication. I'm hoping and assumingother speakers will talk about these, so Iwon't dwell on them here. Quantummechanics also allows unseen communication at a distance, withi n certainconstraints, which we could talk about if we

That is what this next chart attempts toshow. (Figure 15) The unified field is at thisfundamental level of the universe. It is reallybeyond space and time. At the level-tenmillion times deeper than the nuclearlevel-it is so intensely dynamic that spacetime begins to boil. And this next chartshows the boiling of space-time geometrythe rising of space-time foam. This chartshows three different views of space-time.The surface of the chart shows relatively flatspace, which is how things tend to look atthe macroscopic level, and then in themiddle of the chart the structure of space atthe subnuclear level, and then the structureof space-time at the superunified scale-thelevel of the unified field, where space-timebegins to boil. And when space-time beginsto boil into a cauldron of space-timegeometry, with an effervescence of microblack holes and an explosion of black holes,

then on a microscopic level, you can nolonger talk about distance, you Can nolonger talk about time. These conceptssimply have no meaning at that level.

And in particular at that level, according tosuperstring theory, little tubules or wormholescontinuously form. (Figure 16) Many ofthem disappear, but others can drift apart. Awormhole is really a shortcut through space.Wormholes were predicted by Einstein in hisGeneral Relativity Theory, but no one everreally understood how to create them , or ifthey really existed in nature. Now weunderstand that they exist in abundance, andthey are just the microscopic level. Space-timeis filled with them .But this was also true at the time of the BigBang, when the whole of the universe wasconcentrated in a quark. At that pOint

level, wormholes were everywhere. s rheuniverse expanded exponenrially, some ofthese little rubes , rhese shorrcurs shown inrhis chan, ger pulled apart by rhe expansionof space. And now our universe, eventhough relatively flat , is believed ro becrisscrossed by the se shortcuts, rhese socalled wormholes in space. If you've everseen the science fiction movie Contact byCarl Sagan, or read the book , the maincharacters rook advantage of one of thesespace holes to travel from one region of theuniverse to the orher. Well, that was a bigwormhole. J wouldn't normally recommendjumping into one-because the diameter ofmosr wormholes is rhe point-length, and itwould be a terrible process of homogenization of all of one's molecules if one rried rosqueeze oneself inro a wormhole. I'm norrecommending that, but I'm saying tharinformation pours inro these wormholes,

and pops our anywhere-and nor jusran) vhere, bur any rime. This is absolurelyamazing, but rrue . The super-srringrigorously shows rhar you can send informarion instanraneously across the universe andthat you can actually send signals forwardand backward in rime.

N Ow this idea can stan to sound a litriebit like a B moyie , a science fictionmovie, where people rravel to rhe pasr, andrypically rhey screw everything up. And YOllreally can ger inro a rotal logical mess assoon as you entenain rhe possibiliry of timetravel, panicu larly to the past. Bu r thesuperstring is so smarr that ir takes care of

This is the nature of the unified field. It ison the one hand flat, but it also has theseshortcuts. And it provides a rather differentview of the universe than we had only threeyears ago. We used to think the universewas purely causal-that when somethinghappened it would happen for a reason, butthe reason was always in the past: the causein the past, the effect in the future. Nowit turns out that cause can be now and evenin the future, and the effect can be in thepast.By the way many people who are growingin higher states of consciousness, and whoare familiar with the deep level of consciousness, and who are more and more proficientat functioning, thinking, and desiring fromthat level, experience this phenomenon allthe time. It's called support of nature. Youcan say Gosh, I really want a parking spotacross from the movie theater, and I wantit now. And you pull up, and 1 andbehold, there's one empty spot on a streetthat is otherwise packed with cars. That'sfulfillment of desire. But the person whovacated that spot for you had to havevacated it at least a few minutes before yougot there, before you even had the thought. Can your thought today influence events inthe past in order to fulfill your thoughtnow? The answer is yes; according tophysics, you can. There might be other examples I can give, but I m just pointing to this one as aperhaps novel mechanism for most of usthrough which the unified field canpropagate information across vast distances, and certainly between members of society.

So a relatively small group of individualslocated, for example, somewhere near a city,or even far removed-can hold a powerfulinfluence on the lives of the people in thecity. And you can measure this. You canmeasure the brain functioning of nonmeditative subjects, non-meditators in thegeographical vicinity of a meditating group. And the non-meditating brain becomesmore orderly, more synchronous, morecoherent, more inrelligent, and morecreative. We influence people to thatdegree. And other measures confirm thesame thing. I'm just describing this to showthat there are very, very profound unifiedfield-theoretic mechanisms that explain howan individual can have such an influence atsuch a distance, particularly how a group ofindividuals can create such an influence.

B efore I take questions and maybe eventalk about subtle energies and bodiesand so on, let me mention a few actionsteps. What I would really recommend toany human being, anywhere in the world,is to become part of the solution. If you'renot already doing so, transcend. Whateveryou're practicing-if anything, hopefullysomething-experience deeper levels ofthought and transcend the field of thoughtto unbounded, absolure, transcendentalBeing, bliss consciousness. If whateveryou're doing doesn't take you there quickly, learn something that does. On the basis ofa huge amount of scientific research, learnTM Transcendental Meditation) if youcan. This technique is the oldest methodin the world, certainlv the most widelv.practiced, most extensively researched, andmost broadly prescribed by doctors.

Number two: if you possibly can, if you'reof that age, experience education forenlightenment. I went from StanfordUniversity faculty to Maharishi Universityin Iowa, not because I loved Iowa so muchover California-I don't-but because ofthe extraordinary institution that MaharishiUniversity is. There, in addition to readingand writing and arithmetic and business andcomputer science, what is unique is that allthe students and faculty practice meditationand directly unfold enlightenment-fullpotential of mind, body, and behavior.

What is enlightenment, in a nutshell? Whatare higher states of consciousness Totalbrain functioning-full development ofmind, body, and behavior, or the totalbrain-where 100 of the brain isconstantly engaged to fulfill anything, nomatter how ambitious, with increasing ease. It's also called Self-realization-realizing thecosmic Self, big "S," our cosmic nature, whose nature is, fortunately, bliss. What atremendous thing to have 24 hours ofabsolute bliss. t doesn't matter if you'resound asleep, doesn't matter if you'redreaming, doesn't matter if you're underanesthesia even, or if you're wide awake. That unbounded awareness of youruniversal cosmic nature is never lost. Withregular practice, you have 24 hours a dayof bliss-bliss beyond the body.Self-realization is also called freedom frombondage. This just means that without Selfrealization, all you have is your experiencein your waking consciousness at any giventime. You don't experience your unboundedSelf; consciousness is not experienced; the

object of consciousness alone is experienced. And if it's a good object-mashed potatoesand gravy-that's all good. You enjoy theexperience, even at the expense of infinite, eternal, immortal bliss. It's a sacrifice, butnot just a sacrifice. But if you're experiencing marinated okra, that's a disasterbecause at that moment, that's all there isin life. The okra has replaced one'sunbounded, immortal, eternal, blissfulnature.Realize the Self: that's the most importantmessage. Gain enlightenment. Anythingless is a waste of time. The brain wasdesigned for this experience. If you're nothaving it, get it And the side effect of thisis spontaneous, righteous action-spontaneous, life- supporting, health-promotingaction. Global citizenship: knowing how toact, not only in your own best interests, butspontaneously in the interest of society as awhole. And finally, as a practical result, isthe growing ability to achieve anythingthrough a mere impulse of thought. That'show powerful brain functioning becomes. When the whole brain is engaged, whenevery neuron is firing synchronously, thepower of thought, the alpha power, becomesenormous, and the ability to fulfill desirebecomes great.

So I moved from Stanford to MaharishiUniversity to pursue this incredible principle, this practical principle, of education forenlightenment. I believe education shouldbe all about enlightenment. Yes, you canlearn computer skills while you are gainingeternal unbounded bliss. Education shoulddevelop the brain holistically, so that the

scientiflc truth of the unity of life becomesa living reality in daily life.I believe this incorporation of holisticexperience-this meditative state, unbounded awareness-into education ismore important than building new prisons. It s more important than, say, Interneteducation. As good as these approachesmay be, they don t replace enlightenment.Again, the implications for society are huge:global citizenship-the opposite of criminalbehavior, of narrowly short-sighted,extreme, fanatical, nationalist behavior.Extreme nationalism is only the result of astressed, narrowly confined humanconsciousness. Expand consciousness to beglobal, universal, and spontaneous globalcitizenship results.

And finally, as we are seeing, worldpeace is a side effect of such education.Any school that is big enough-that hasmaybe a couple thousand students, allcollectively pracrking this advanced medita-tion together in one place-will have anincredibly powerful peaceful effect on thewhole society, reducing crime and violenceand even preventing war on a global basis. At Maharishi University today, we have justunder 2,000 students, but enough to createa national effect. We re rapidly buildingthose numbers as quickly as possible to2,000, to 2,500, by which time the wholetone of the U.S. will be changed. It willbe impossible to elect a George Bush again.People just won t vote for negativity, violence, and war when they can vore forglobal peace-and achieve peace on apractical basis. I won t go into that any

more, except to say that proper educationhas the side effect of world peace. That sthe sort of education I m recommending. This concludes my formal presentation.will be delighted to hear /Tom you after theconference. how these principles can be used forhealing?JH: That's a very good point. Firstl]i in termsof healing one's self, let me mmtion that thepower of thought that creates a healinginfluence is far, far greater at deeper levels ofthought. As I said before. thought has manylevels: superficial and profound, correspondingto macroscopic, molecular, atomic. nuclear, and subnuclear levels of thought. Literalry, these nuclear and subnuclear levels of thoughton the level of the unified field are e n o r m o u s ~ ypowClful as compared with surfoce thoughts. So the healing influence of thought at deeperlevels is spontaneous and powerfol. ThankGod for that.Now. meditations differ hi terms ofteclmique--but this also applies to prayer. I'vebeen to some churches, one in Los Angeles.where people are so excited that they shout outthe name of God in prtlyer, jumping up anddown in the aisles. And do meditators need to be physicallytogether and meditating at the same timeto really create positive nourishing change?JH: VeIY velY good questions. Practicallyspeakillg, according to all the publishedresearch, the closer you are to the meditatinggroup, the more powerfol the effict. And thateffict is very much like a radio antenna, radiobroadcast, or eveu a light bulb. The intensityof the light grows dimmer with distance. Itfalls off somewhere due to the distance, thesame as the radio wave, the same i1S allYclassical field phenomenon. This appears tobe more or less the mse with the influence of

group meditation, ullless the group gets bigenough to start to illjlumce the entire globe. At that poilu, it becomes more truly a globalphenomenoll. And that effict would requireabout 8,000 advallced meditators ill a group. And we re real6 working hard to build upsuch a group. It s not so easy to find such agroup, but we hdlJe about 2,000 and growing. So proximity does seem to make a d ~ f f i r e n c eBut that may be, perhaps, only becausemeditators, even adwlIlced as they are, are notall really established ill a state of mlighten-ment. MallY of them are growing in enlight-enment. Some are there. And they re /lotnecessarily completely established in that levelof illdividual reality that is truly unbounded, truly global, truly cosmic. And cOllSequemlythe degree of our influence may be somewhatphysically limited. That s a speculation. Jcant say that 11 the strength of research. Butit may happen that meditators become moreadvanced as they practice. So for the timebeillg, like chess players, we may htwe to moveour assets illto the lJicillity of a conflict toreally have a cOllcentrated, powerfol effict Oileliminating the violma. That s what all theresearch shows. But among the sevm studiesI showed you Oll tumirlg off the war l l theMiddLe East, three of the groups studied werefor away Two were ill the United States, andone was in the Netherlands. These groupswere for from the Middle East, but thosestudies illvolved at Least 8,000 meditators, where the influence was large enough tobecome more ofa global upsurge in peace anda reduction ill globaL terrorism.Whm you want to meditate with a group, orto have maximum influence, it is most

effictive to be in the group. That s just allempirical foct. However, if you call't bephysically in the group, then ifyou call timeyour individual meditation to coillcide withthe group meditation, that also seems to havea beneficial f f i c t It hamf bem very carefullystudied scientifically, but people subjectivelyreport there's all increased likeLihood totrallscmd and to experience universal Beingwhm you're meditating coincidentally with alarge meditating group. J think that amwersthe questioll.uestion 4: Does participation in the large

It s extraordinary, Likeyou re readillg from the Upanishads.Experiences Like this, certainLy h thesenumbers, are extremely rare in this UJorld. So yes, these are tldvanced meditators, butthey re ill a group, which very much enhallcesthe experience. Even a relat ively llewmeditator could go and join this group andbe amazed at the incredible bliss ofhis or herown experimces. But it s really on the basisof these deeper experiences that a mere 2,000people can have a national effict.
