Environmentally Responsible DesignCaterpillar machines not only help you build a better world, they help maintain and preserve the fragile environment.

Outstanding performance.Many features designed to provideoutstanding performance which can mean more work done in a day, less fuel consumption and minimalimpact on our environment.

Low exhaust emissions. The Cat C18diesel engine utilizes unique ACERTtechnology to meet exhaust emissionsregulations while assuring optimum fuel efficiency.

Quiet operation. The hydraulicallydriven cooling fan is thermostaticallycontrolled, so the fan only runs at thespeed necessary to maintain correctsystem operating temperatures. Theresult is cool quiet operation with lessdisturbance to the surroundingenvironment.

Ozone protection. To help preserve the earth’s ozone layer, the airconditioning unit uses only R-134arefrigerant which does not containharmful chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s).

Fewer leaks and spills. Engine oil andencapsulated hydraulic oil filters arepositioned vertically and are easy to reachto minimize spillage. Service intervals areextended to reduce the times fluids arechanged and handled. The new hydraulicoil fine filtration system attachmentextends the service interval from 2000 to5000 hours. Compatible with Cat HEEShydraulic bio-oil for ecologically sensitiveapplications. Finally, the new CatExtended Life Coolant extends service (up to 6000 h) so there is less need forfluid disposal.

EngineA combination of innovations working at the point of combustion, ACERT technologyoptimizes engine performance while meeting EU Stage II and Stage IIIA emission regulations.

Diesel Engine. The Caterpillar C18, with ACERT technology, is a 18.1 liter,six-cylinder, 390 kW (530 hp) enginewith mechanically actuated electronicfuel injection (MEUI) and overheadcamshaft. ACERT technology providesoutstanding engine performance throughadvanced electronic control, precisionfuel delivery, and refined airmanagement.

Fuel Consumption. The AdvancedDiesel Engine Management (A4)controller uses sensors throughout the engine to manage engine load andperformance. The A4 controller is themuscle behind engine responsiveness,self-diagnostics, controlling emissions,and fuel economy.

Fuel System. C18 engine uses amechanically actuated electricallycontrolled unit injection (MEUI)system. The MEUI system combineshigh- pressure injection and electroniccontrol in a single compact unit. The electronic unit injector is anintegral part of the C18 fuel system.Computerized electronic controlprovides precise metering and timing of fuel injection.

Cooling System. High capacity,side-by-side cooling system allowsoperation in ambient temperatures up to 52˚C. The Electric Power Control(EPC) controls the fan speed based oncoolant temperature and hydraulic oiltemperature for optimized cooling.

Turbocharger. The C18 engine uses a water-cooled, center-section wastegated turbocharger for improvedperformance. This turbocharger controlsthe air volume to the cylinders andworks efficiently during low and highload conditions.

Emissions. ACERT Technology is a differentiated technology thatreduces emissions at the point ofcombustion. The technology capitalizes on proven Caterpillarleadership in three core engine systems:fuel, air and electronics.

Cold Weather Starting Kit. The kit consists of two additionalbatteries, heavy-duty harness, large capacity starting motor, and the ether starting aid. With this kit, the excavator has the capability to start at -32˚C.

Undercarriage and StructuresDurable undercarriage absorbs stresses and provides excellent stability.

Travel Motors. Two-speed axial pistonhydraulic motors provide the 385C FSdrive power. Speed selection is auto-matic when the high-speed position isselected. Travel motors have internaldisk brakes to hold the machine whenstationary. The travel motors areprotected from damage by rigid covers.

Upper Frame. Rugged main frame isdesigned for maximum durability andefficient use of materials.� Robot welding for consistent,

high-quality welds.� Outer frame utilizes curved side rails,

which are die-formed, for excellentuniformity and strength throughoutthe length.

� Box section channels improveupper frame rigidity under the cab.

� Boom tower and one piece main rails.� New boom foot design transfers load

more efficiently with less stress incritical areas.

� Reinforced lift cylinder and swingdrive mounts increase structuredurability in rock and quarryapplications.

Track. The 385C comes standard withthe new grease lubricated track calledGLT4. The track links are assembledand sealed with grease to decreaseinternal bushing wear, reduce travelnoise and extend service life loweringoperating costs.

Track Rollers. Track rollers are a heavy-duty type with increased strength forlonger life. They also use solid pinsfor retention of the collars and a moresecure design.

Idler Guards and Track Guides.Idler guards and center track guides used to maintain track alignment arestandard. Optional two-piece full-lengthtrack guiding guards are available for additional protection on steep side slopes.

Final Drives. The final drives are thethree-stage reduction planetary type. This design results in a complete drive/brake unit that is compact and delivers excellent performance and reliability.

Carbody Design. The advanced carbodydesign stands up to the toughestapplications. � Modified X-shaped, box-section

carbody provides excellent resistanceto torsional bending.

� Upper structure weight and stressesare distributed evenly across the fulllength of the track roller frame.

� Robot welding ensures consistent,high-quality welds throughout themanufacturing process.

HydraulicsCaterpillar hydraulics deliver power and control to keep material moving at high volume.

Power Management Control.The pump-valve electronic controlleris central to power managementcontrol and provides highly efficientcontrol for the pumps, valves andengine.

Swing Performance. The three-pumpsystem with independent swinggives priority to the swing circuit forstrong swing acceleration and easilycontrolled multi-function operation.

Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil.Biodegradable hydraulic oil isavailable as an option.

Component Layout. The hydraulic pumps,control valve and hydraulic tank are locatedclose together to minimize the length ofpiping. The swing control valve is mounteddirectly on the swing motor. Main and swingpump suction and discharge lines have largediameters. These large diameters, combinedwith the component layout, guarantee highefficiency.

Auxiliary Hydraulics. An auxiliary valve is standard on the 385C FS and is used for the bottom dump circuit. It is drivenelectrically based on commands from the pump-valve controller.

Front Linkage Hydraulic System.The hydraulic system for the implementconsists of two boom cylinders, a stickcylinder, two bucket cylinders, two bottomdump cylinders and a master cylinder.

Hydraulic Oil Filtration System.The 385C FS hydraulic system features six standard filters in four types.These filters improve reliability, extend the life of hydraulic equipment and hydraulic oil, boost performance and reduce running costs. A fine filtrationsystem is available as an attachment.

Third Pedal for Straight Travel (attachment).A third pedal for straight travel is availableas an attachment. This pedal allows straightmachine travel using only a single pedal.

Hydraulic System. The 385C FShydraulic system includes a three-pumpsystem with an independent swingcircuit and a hydraulic circuit utilizingthe proven Proportional PriorityPressure Compensated (PPPC) system.It features Caterpillar-developedelectronic control and activation toensure high hydraulic system efficiencyand excellent productivity.

PPPC System. The load sensing PPPCsystem provides the following features:� Cylinder speed is directly related to

operator’s movement of the joystickfrom feathering to full speed.

� Flow to cylinders during multi-functional operation is directlycontrolled by the operator and isnot dependent on loads.

� Controller reduces pump outputto minimum to save power whenjoysticks are in neutral position.

Front LinkageThe 385C FS delivers higher production and efficiency to all jobs.

Parallelogram Linkage. The Cat 385C FS Front Shovel featuresparallelogram-type front linkage with a master cylinder. The parallelogramlinkage automatically keeps the bucketparallel to the ground. This allowsexcellent penetration, fast loading and asmooth floor clean-up. The operator canconcentrate on the boom and stickrather than bucket adjustments. The master cylinder circuit auto-matically maintains a level bucket while raising the boom. It aids in bucketpositioning both above and belowgrade, eliminating constant adjustmentduring the work cycle. The mastercylinder arrangement also uses bucketcylinder circuit pressure to increase the boom lifting force.

Boom. The boom is 4.6 m long andfeatures a rigid structure with a numberof steel castings. The cast steel portionsare structured into a box to reduce the weight of the boom nose and boom foot.

Stick. The 385C FS offers a 3.4 m longstick. The stick nose and stick foot aremade of cast steel. The middle portionhas a box structure fabricated with steelplates. The stick cylinder-mountingbracket is reinforced from the inside.

Bottom Dump Bucket.The recommended bucket for the 385C FS is a bottom dump bucket. It is designed for strength, performanceand long service life.

Linkage Pin. All pins used in the 385C FS front linkage have thickchrome plating, giving them highwear and corrosion resistance. The diameter of each pin is made as large as possible to smoothlydistribute the shear and bendingloads associated with the digging and lifting forces.

Cab Design. The workstation has beendesigned to be spacious, quiet andcomfortable for the operator, assuring high productivity throughout the entireworkday. Switches are convenientlylocated for easy access. The new monitoris located to provide excellent visibilityand access.

Seat. The seat provides a variety ofadjustments, including fore/aft, height and weight to suit the operator. Also included are adjustable armrests and a retractable seat belt. For additionalcomfort, a new heated air suspension seat is available as an attachment.

Skylight. An enlarged skylight withsunshade provides excellent visibility and good ventilation.

Hydraulic Activation Control Lever.The hydraulic activation control leverdeactivates hydraulic functions duringengine start-up, and preventsunintentional machine operation.

Climate Control. Positive filteredventilation with a pressurized cab comesstandard. Fresh air or re-circulated air canbe selected with a switch on the leftconsole.

Windows. To maximize visibility,all glass is affixed directly to the cabeliminating the use of window frames.Choice of fixed or easy-to-open splitfront windshield meet operatorpreference and application conditions. � 50/50 split front windshield allows

both upper and lower portions to bestored in an overhead position.

� 70/30 split front windshield stores the upper portion above the operator.The lower front windshield features a rounded design to maximizedownward visibility and improveswiper coverage.

� Both openable versions feature a one-touch action release system.

� The fixed front windshield is availablein standard duty laminated glass orhigh impact resistant laminated glass.

Wipers. Parallelogram wiper, includinga washer nozzle is mounted below thecab windshield, optimizes the operator’sviewing area and offers continuous andintermittent modes.

Monitor. The compact, full-color,graphical display monitor is new. The monitor has functions to displaymachine, maintenance, diagnostic and prognostic information. The angleof the monitor can be adjusted to face the operator and prevent sun glare.

Cab Exterior. The exterior design usesthick steel tubing along the bottomperimeter of the cab, improving theresistance of fatigue and vibration.This design allows the FOGS to bebolted directly to the cab, at the factoryor as an attachment later, enabling the machine to meet specifications and job site requirements.

Cab Mounts. The cab shell is attachedto the frame with viscous rubber cabmounts, which dampen vibrationsand sound levels while enhancingoperator comfort.

Cab Riser. To provide excellent forwardvisibility for truck loading and otherapplications, an 870 mm cab riser is standard on the 385C Front Shovel.

Monitor Display Screen. The monitor isa full color 400x234 pixels Liquid CrystalDisplay (LCD) graphic display.The Master Caution Lamp blinks ON andOFF when one of the critical conditionsbelow occurs:� Engine oil pressure low� Coolant temperature high� Hydraulic oil temperature highUnder normal conditions or the defaultcondition, the monitor display screenis divided into four areas; clock and throttle dial, gauge, event display andmulti-information display.

Clock and Throttle Dial Display. The clock,throttle dial and gas-station icon with greencolor are displayed in this area.

Gauge Display. Three analog gauges,fuel level, hydraulic oil temperatureand coolant temperature, are displayed in this area.

Event Display. Machine event informationis displayed in this area along with the iconand language.

Multi-information Display. This areais reserved for displaying information that is convenient for the operator.The “CAT” logo mark is displayed whenno information is available to display.

Operator Gain/Response. This is used tosuit the operators preference or application.� Quicker, for fast response and more

production� Slower, for more precision� Three preset settings with 21 available

Electronic Joysticks. Electronic joy-sticks provide features not possible withhydraulic pilot valves:� Eliminate pilot lines in cab for quieter

operation� Adjustable gain/response

Consoles. Redesigned consoles feature a simple, functional design to reduceoperator fatigue, ease of switchoperation and excellent visibility. Both consoles have attached armrestsand allow the height of the armrests to be adjusted.

Standard Cab Equipment. To enhanceoperator comfort and productivity,the cab includes a lighter, drink holder,coat hook, service meter, literatureholder, magazine rack and storagecompartment. The cab can be equippedwith optional 12 volt converter and up to two 12V-7 amp electrical sockets toprovide additional electrical resources.

Machine Security. An optional Machine Security System (MSS) is available from the factory. MSS uses a special Caterpillar keywith an embedded electronic chip for controlling unauthorized machineoperation.
