“The Coin Machines Merry-Go-Round ”

As stated, a few issues ago, some men become angry because of machines shipped to

them in poor condition and ship these on to someone else, without even touching them.

Rather than have this happen, time after time, thereby creating a vicious circle that

will soon be impossible to cure at all. The Cash Box believes that if the mennow en-

gaged in this industry will pledge themselves to honestly ship only the type of ma-chines and merchandise they specify in advance this will surely help to cure one of

the moat prevalent of present evils.

VQL. 5. NO. 30 THE CASH BOX APRIL 18, 1944

“The Coin Machines Merry-Go-Round ”

MERCHANDISE THE ARCADEMarry of the newer arcade owners have suddenly found their collections falling down.

In some cases the (Jrop has been as much as 35%, These men have been attempting to

learn just what Caused this drop. Most of them attribute it to the inclement weather

of these past few months which has kept people at home. They are also of the belief

that since large numbers of soldiers and sailors are disappearing off the streets that

this especially has been effective in causing this drop,

Ihe average ‘’downtown” arcade, in almost any city, is today owned by men who have

been engaged in the arcade business for only a few years. This does not mean that

these men are entirely new to this business# They may also be operating or jobbing in

the same city. Most of these arcades are also somewhat similar in decorations and

appearance. Some of these spots are unusually attractive. Yet only a few have any

definite understanding of showmanship. There is no doubt that these arcades, once

showmanship is put to good use in them, Will completely revive,

Ihe average war era big city arcade features from 17 to 20' ray guns. Usually 5

or 6 of these are set up as a battery with a counter built in front in the fashion of

the regular shooting gallery. Scattered here and there thruout the premises are an-

other 10 to 12 and sometimes as many as 15 more ray guns of various types.

There is usually a Ten Strike, a Western Baseball, Batting Practice, a couple of

Photomatics back to back, a cigarette machine, a phono playing continuously, a fewDrive Mobiles, a Horoscope machine, the Panoram conversion, a couple of Ace Bombers

and a battery of 10 or more pin games. In some spots Diggers are also featured and

in a few pay tables and consoles, too.

It seems that most of these newer arcade owners simply slapped a batch of ma-chines into a store, paid high rent to get into the busy downtown central district, and then let nature take its course. While the city was overrun with soldiers andsailors, war workers and visitors seeking entertainment, these spots boomed.

But it now seems that these hurriedly arranged arcades have begun to wear on the

playing public. Regardless of constant machine switching from one spot to another onthe floor, and introduction of new games every now and then, the play has fallen, ancl

it doesn’t seem as if the recovery will be very speedy. As yet the average new ar-cade owner is simply taking his time and waiting for the better weather to come aroundin the belief that this will bring back the big boom play he formerly enjoyed. There

is no doubt that better weather will help somewhat. But better weather will not bring

back the soldiers and sailors and neither will it eliminate the boredom which has a-

risen in many civilian players due to the fact that they constantly see the same gamestime after time, when they enter into these arcades.

Ihe Cash Box believes that the answer lies in correctly merchandising the arcadeitself. The days of just gathering together a bunch of equipment and placing it aboutthe floor in some centrally located store are over. The public want something new anddifferent to bring them in and hold their interest. It is therefore up to these ar-cade owners, especially those men who have been engaged in the arcade business forjust a year or two^to correctly merchandise their locations so that the public will be

interested in coming in and playing the equipment.

Older arcade men, who have been in the business fur many years, used every con-ceivable showmanship idea to constantly interest and re-interest players. Some evenbrought freak acts into their places. Others sold food and drinks. Some also openedconcessions to sell pop corn, candy, costume jewelry and other such merchandise. Someeven went to greater effort to capture the public’s interest for their spots, bringthem in and hold them the*re until they started down the line playing the games.

Ihe Cash Box does not believe that arcade take will stay down especially wheredefinite showmanship and merchandising ability is demonstrated. Ihe Cash Box believesthat the majority of the new arcade owners must begin to think of new ideas for theirspots and thereby stimulate interest in their places all over again. There are stilla tremendous number of people passing the doors of the average new arcade in the aver-age city each day who will come in to play the machines.

It also seems that the average new big eity arcade owner believes that the sol-dier and sailor is out of the picture as far as former large numbers are concerned, andhe must now cater to the very young and the older people. This being the case, thesearcades should arrange their plans and ideas to correspond with this situation. TheCash Box believes that the only trouble regarding the lowered take in most of thesecomplaining new arcades is lack of proper showmanship in merchandising the arcade it-self, In short, with the day of the big boom service man rush more or less over, thenthe arcade owner must now plan to attract the orowds of people that are left in hiscity to his spot. And to do that he must merchandise his business - not take it forgranted anymore.

.UMBER CONTROL

Moving to effect more complete control

{ increasingly scarce lumber, the War’roduction Board announced that all major

onsumers must file applications on or be-

Dre April 25th for their second and third

uarter requirements.

After these applications are received

VTB expects to draw a new order estab-

shing procedures under which delivery of

amber will be authorized. The application

rder affects consumers who used more

han 50,000 board feet during the final

uarter of 1943 or who expect to use more

l\an that amount during either the second

r third quarter of 1944.

Lumber consumption during the past

wo years has exceeded production by

1 , 1 00,000,000 board feet and estimates for

944 indicate that even under existing con-

pis consumption will exceed production

y an additional 4,500,000,000 board feet,

o far this lack has been filled by with-

rawals from stocks which WPB said nowtand at only 7,284,000,000 board feet,

do low to permit further withdrawals.

Chief rise in lumber consumption is

he demand for packing material, whichmounted to over 17,000,000,000 board;et last year, almost half the total con-

amption and four times the normalmount.

(Coinmen shipping machines in crates

lust have a large stock of lumber. It is

>ell for such shippers to be prepared for

hese tighter controls.)

conclusion.”

STRAIGHTENED OUT

Carl F. Trippe of Ideal NoveltyCompany, St. Louis, Mo., who just wentthru a bit of trial by fire to get somemoney due him and wrote The Casli Boxto help him get his money back, writes us

as follows: “I surely want to thank youfor what you have done in helping me get

this matter straightened out. You havegiven more of your own time to all the

boys in the industry for the good of the

business, and also in making adjustments,

than anyone in this industry. We assure

you we appreciate this very much. We hopesome day to be able to reciprocate.”

LOUIS BOASBERG

Aruns Callery of New Orleans Novelty

Company, New Orleans, writes: “Mr.Boasberg has written us from the South

Pacific that he would like for us to sub-

scribe to The Cash Box and have us mail

him the news section of The Cash Boxby airmail every week. Therefore, please,

upon receiving this letter, enter our sub-

scription for one year to The Cash Boxand bill us for same.

“Mr. Boasberg, who is on duty abroad

(We sure hope that Louis Boasberg will

feel so good every time he reads The CashBox aboard his Aircraft Carrier in the

South Pacific that he’ll knock out 50 Japs

for every word he reads. Good luck, Louis,

we’re all waiting for your return.)

RECORD & NEEDLES

H. B. (Cadillac) Jones of Jones Coin

Machines, Stephenville, Tex., jumped on

his bronc to mail us the following letter,

“We would like to lodge a complaint about

the quality of records and the supposedly

2000 play needles commonly used by

operators.

“Our operation is scattered over 27 small

towns and we check most of the machines

every two weeks. We find that with the

sorry quality of the needles and records wenow have to go to some of them every few

days to change the needles and records.

“Needles that formerly played 2000 to

3000 plays now last from 300 to 1000 plays

and records only last from 20 to 50 plays.

The record companies give us about 40%of our needs but ship large quantities to

retail stores. We then have to spend lots

of time and extra money ordering records

at retail prices from concerns all over the

country.

“I would rather pay more and get better

quality, as these service calls are about to

drive us crazy. Lots of our machines are

located from 35 to 60 miles from head-

quarters and with the tire and gas shortage

what it is, this is quite a headache.

“The tube situation is just as bad. Weare now getting all we need but can’t get

them thru regular wholesale channels. Wehave to pay retail prices and order from far

away places.”

CALIFORNIA LEGALIZES

“Curley” Robinson of A.O.L.A.C., LosAngeles, sends us in the report of the

meeting of the Mayor and the City Councilof Redondo Beach, Calif., wherein Council-man Wortham requested City AttorneyWm. E. McFaden to submit a writtenopinion as to the legality of marble or pin-

ball games.

The City Attorney in the forepart of

his written opinion discusses the oneCalifornia case on the legality of pinball;

the favorable decision of Judge Charles C.Haynes of the Superior Court of San DiegoCounty. He also enters into a most com-plete discussion and review of this case.

In winding up his written opinion CityAttorney McFaden writes: “If the machineis played by the use of a coin and if the

operation of the same is purely by hazardand chance and the machine returns moneyor some article of value, then the machinewould come within the prohibition of the

statute. However, all three elements mustbe present before said machine violates thePenal Code of the State of California.

“It is interesting to note that the generalopinion in the State of California, and in

other states thruout the United States, hasbeen that such machines were and are legal

and that their operation must be discon-tinued only by legislation enacted by theState, or ordinances enacted by the cities

or counties. All such municipal or countyordinances are based on the theory that thecity or county, thru its police power, hasthe right to regulate or prohibit the opera-tion of such amusements.”A motion was made and seconded and

carried unanimously by all the members ofthe City Council that this opinion becomea part of the records of the council meeting.

(Complete copies of this written opinioncan be had from Samuel “Curley” Robin-son of the A.O.L.A.C., 1351 WashingtonBlvd., Los Angeles, Calif.)

Fred Iverson of Eastern Sales Co.,Rochester, N. Y., writes: “The enclosedletter is an example of what Johnny Bilottahas done toward the war effort.”

Johnny is Fred’s partner, but at thepresent time is serving with the Navy.Mrs. Karl Morrison, Secretary of the

Marion County Council, Marion, N. Y.,writes John, “The Community Councilaccepts your gracious offer in allowing usto use your property here for the durationas a Community Center.

OF FAMOUS

GAMES AND VENDERS

Production at the “Bally” plant is one

hundred per cent for Uncle Sam. Night

and day, seven days a week, the “Bally”

organization is building battle equipment

for the Army and the Navy, proving that

the skill developed in peace-time design

and construction of coin-operated games

and venders is a valuable asset to

America in time of war.

Plans of the “Bally” organization call for

quick production of new games and

venders immediately after victory . . . end

for exploitation of the marvelous new

electronic principles developed by war-

time technology. In the post-war era, as in

the past, “you can bank on Bally” for

the newest in money-making equipment.

THE CONFIDENTIAL PRICE LISTSAN EXCLUSIVE MERCHANDISING SERVICEFORTHECOIN MACHINES INDUSTRY

ISSUED EVERY WEEK BY: THE CASH BOX. 381 FOURTH AVE., NEW YORK 16. N.Y.

FOREWORDMany time*, wide differences appear in the high and low prices of certain equipment. Like any true reporter TheConfidential Price Lists can only feature the market prices as they are quoted. The Confidential Price Lists act exactly

the same as the market quotation board at the Stock Exchange—posting the prices exactly as they are quoted for

each week, regardless of how much they may seem to be out of line. Some machine prices do not change lor

months. The Confidential Price Lists, rather than show no price for the week, retain the last known quotations for

such equipment so that the subscriber at least has the last known quoted prices as a basis to work with. Prices

continue to be very widely divergent these days. Someone on the West Coast may feel a certain machine worth$150.00 whereas someone on the East Coast may think it worth but $75.00. Of course, condition. seriaL appearance, demand, territory, quantity, etc., must ail be taken into consideration. The Confidential Price Lists report eachquotation exactly as it is made and depend on the subscriber to make average price adjustment to fit the peculiarities

of his own territory.

METHODThe Confidential Price Lists are to be read as follows: First price listed is lowest price for the week; Second price listed

is highest price for the week; Where only one price appears this should be considered lowest price.

CODECHECK THIS CODE CAREFULLY. BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH EACH ONE OF THE CODE NUMBERS ANDWHAT THEY SIGNIFY. THESE CODE NUMBERS APPEAR IN FRONT OF THE NAME OF EACH MACHINE.

1. MEANS PRICE WENT UP.

2 .MEANS PRICE WENT DOWN.

3 .MEANS MACHINE JUST ADDED TO LIST.

4 MEANS PRICES WENT UP AND DOWNSAME WEEK.

C MEANS PRICES REMAINED SAME AS INPAST WEEK'S ISSUE.

e MEANS NO PRICES QUOTED FORPAST TWO WEEKS.

7 MEANS NO PRICES QUOTED FOR' PAST THREE WEEKS.

O MEANS NO PRICES QUOTED FORPAST FOUR WEEKS OR LONGER.

IMPORTANTMachines underlined mean these were most active

in trading this past week.

NOTICE ! March, 1942, Market Prices for Wholesalers as per GMPR of OPAappeared in September 7, 1943 issue. Reprints are available.
