The Anchor Down Parties

This year there will be an entertaining activity on each weekend cruise after the anchor is down and the raft is closed. You can participate or just smother your laughter from the sidelines. In August the Anchor Down Party is called The June Cleaver Appetizers & Desserts and will be a flashback to 1950’s-style entertaining. Instead of dinner, each boat is asked to prepare 1950’s appetizers or desserts and make it available for tasting as people move around the raft. Everyone will have the opportunity to taste dishes and vote on the one they find to be The Most Delicious, The Most 1950’s Authentic Dish, and The Most Unusual Food. There will be prizes! Details will be sent to people who sign up for the cruise, then you can begin to brainstorm how to best use your creativity to win a prize.

Despite the heat, some of the best sailing of the season is often in August; the month is full of fun events. First up is the Seafood Feast with plenty of crabs and shrimp to eat and with one of our favorite bands, Kaleidoscope, playing great music for dancing. Next up is the Town Hall meeting at

the Town Hall in Galesville, a free-to-members supper followed by the nominating speeches of the people who are running for the Board. At the end of the month the always popular Appetizers and Desserts sail will be held in one of my favorite sailing places -- the Chester River. A potluck fundraiser for the Hospice Cup Race is also on the August calendar. Come out and support Team SOS for this good cause. A BBQ Chat, which focuses on new members, is scheduled mid-month in Northern Virginia. This is a great way to find out more about the club and meet other club members in your region. Skippers! Lots of crew members want to sail! Please sign-up to sail with the club! And plan to sail with Team SOS in the Hospice Cup on September 17. See details on page 11. The Board is delighted that Ned Schwartz has volunteered to Chair the First Mates Advisory Committee. Do you like to write? The SOS team needs someone to write short articles each month about our activities and coming events for publicity in SpinSheet’s cruising club section and its website. A Public Relations Committee Chair is also needed. Contact Jim Randall or myself for more details. Special thank yous to Dean Collins for developing some skill-tuning exercises for the First Mate Training Weekend and to Harry Keith, Laura Gwinn and John Parsons for skippering for the weekend. First Mates then joined the Lost in the 60’s raft for the second circle raft of the season. Kudos to Jon Bernheimer and Linda Nahin for volunteering their homes and Linda Casucci and Ellie Kallins for coordinating new member BBQ chats in Rockville and Annapolis. Thank yous to Molly Harrison and Ned Schwartz, who hosted the annual First Mate get-together at their home and Bev Nash ensured that there was enough food and beverages for everyone. Much appreciation to Shirley Brooks Hollendursky for coordinating the Anchor Down Parties at raft-ups and to her helpers Linda Nelson, Jill Montgomery, Joyce Eller, Teresa Scofield, Linda Casucci and Pam Ledford. The parties have added frivolity to Happy Hours at the raft-ups. I am looking forward to seeing you on the water!

Commodore: Parade of Lights are taking up room in storage shed and should be sold since we no longer participate in Parade of Lights. Suggestions for Board Nominations should go to Kathy Higdon. Vice Commodore: Organization for Town Hall Meeting is in place. Treasurer: Project the club will end 2016 with $5,000 less income than last year due to lower membership revenue and higher web administrative costs. Bareboat: No new proposals or issues to report. Brunches: No report. Cruising: The Leukemia Cup Regatta was very successful. The Anniversary Cruise had about 22 boats participating and all crew who registered were placed on a boat. The "Lost in the 60s Cruise" had 12 boats participate; only 3 people were left on shore. Day Sails continue to remain problematic with lack of skippers. Database: Instagram Account and an online SOS Scrapbook have been completed. Board Minutes and Committee Reports have been placed online. An electronic version of the SOS calendar is available to download to multiple devices. Working with First Mate Chair to collect and update online FM information. Education: Will hold a kick off meeting on August 13 right before the Town Hall Meeting. First Mates: No report. Membership: Ellie Abrams sending out new member packages. Ruth Ann Strauss making membership flyer to place in strategic locations. BBQ Chats and New Member Mentor Program are going well. Newsletter: Eighty-six copies of the June 20-page Whisker Pole were mailed to 68 members and 18 Happy Hour coordinators at a cost of $312.03 which was $3.62 per copy. Public Relations: None Safety: Three boats participated in the on-water First Mate Training and program went well. Skippers Advisory: Passing Lines are now with the Raft Captain Committee to be distributed as needed. Would like to pole skippers to see why they aren’t sailing. Social: Continue to focus on ways to cut costs and I am open to suggestions. Discussing use of more DJs vs bands to reduce costs. Board discussed restricting service of alcohol after 9:30pm at Social Functions.

Emil Becker, Education Committee Chair Please come to a meeting on August 13 and learn about the magic of The Education Committee: who organizes the various education events and why they do it. Could it be that this committee has more fun than any other and that many long time friendships result from working together? Many have said that beyond Cruising, Education is the heart and soul of SOS! Through the fall, winter and early spring, Education organizes programs to expand the knowledge base of SOS sailors. Seminars, fireside chats and other programs help members at every skill level become better sailors. It all culminates in mid-March at the most heavily-attended SOS event of the year, Spring Training. Each year we bring several hundred members and local Annapolis sailors to a fantastic all-day event with seminars on topics ranging from the basic to the most advanced.

2016 – 2017 is going to be a great season for SOS Education. Seminars, fireside chats, and other events leading to the biggest and best Spring Training in our history!! Success doesn’t come easy. Needed are the creative thoughts, and hard work of many volunteers! Please come and find out how a small group of volunteers organizes several education events while

having a great time. We will meet on Saturday, August 13, 2017 between 2:00 and 4:00 PM immediately before the Town Hall Meeting in the Town Hall at Galesville . Once you hear about how the committee works like a well-oiled machine, please volunteer for one of the many small or larger tasks that makes Education the success it has been in the past. Members at all skills levels are welcome!

Please contact Emil Becker at [email protected] to let him know you plan to attend and to answer any questions you may have (there is no sign up on the SOS web page).

The 2016 Nominating Committee comprised of Kathy Higdon, Cindy Turner, and Kitty St. Romain is seeking to fill a slate of well-qualified and inspired members to serve as SOS Board Members. In September, four members will be elected to the Board of Directors for two-year terms. Are you capable of providing positive leadership, guidance, training, and appreciation to Committee Chairs and other volunteers? If you feel that you are ready, willing, and able to bring your energy and talents to help provide leadership to SOS, or would care to nominate another, please contact a member of the Nominating Committee as soon as possible. In addition, any eligible member may be nominated and seconded from the floor of the Town Hall Meeting on August 13th, and if they accept that nomination will appear on the September election ballot.

Call for Regional Thanksgiving Dinner Hosts

There are going to be Regional Thanksgiving Dinners on November 19th and volunteers are needed to host the dinners. These gatherings are always a great feast with good fun. The host decides how many guests to invite,

the start time, and coordinates which dish each guest will bring. Please contact Kitty St. Romain by October 10th if you would like to be a host or have questions. Tis the perfect time to volunteer for a fun, one-time e

his vent.

If you would like to attend, please note there is no registration on the web site. Instead you contact Kitty St. Romain ([email protected] ) who will coordinate the guest list with the hosts who will call you with an invitation. Then you send the host a $15 donation, bring a dish to share, and help tidy up. It couldn’t be easier or more fun

Hospice Cup, a unique charity regatta, is a cooperative effort of Hospice Cup, Inc., Eastport Yacht Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, and multiple hospices serving the Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia areas where most racers live and work. The participating hospices benefit from funds raised through sponsorships, sailing crews, Shore Party ticket sales, and the live and silent auctions. As part of our SOS Community Outreach, members can support Hospice Cup in a variety of ways: Volunteer: Hospice Cup relies on the giving spirit of volunteers to help keep operations cost down. Please consider volunteering for this year’s Shore Party. Helpers are needed at the registration table, the merchandise table, to set-up and clean-up. Not only do you get a tee-shirt, you get to attend a great party. To sign up: http://www.hospicecup.org/participate/volunteer/ Sail Skippers: Anyone can race in Hospice Cup whether you are a seasoned racer or a cruising sailor. This is a chance for those of us who are not racers to participate in a fun, easy race that has a class just for us -The Hospice Class. The regatta takes place on the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Severn River. Skippers who register by September 2 will receive one (1) free Shore Party ticket and a $20 discount on registration fee if registered before September 10. Racers may purchase discounted tickets in advance, or qualify to win tickets by participating in the sailor fundraising program. To see the Notice of Race and to register your boat: http://eastportyc.org/hospice-cup . the “perfect coordination!! While we try our best to place everyone on a boat that meets all of your needs, we are not mind-readers. Skippers and potential crew, please use the comments section of your registration to let us know if you have special needs and/or physical limitations, as well as preferences for boat location.
