Surgical gowns are an essential part of protection in the Operating Theatre environment for both clinicians and patients. Using single use surgical gowns dramatically reduces the risk of infection.

EN13795

EN13795 is an EU harmonised standard which specifi es the performance requirements for surgical gowns and drapes. EN13795 specifi es methods to test the fabric’s resistance to wet and dry microbial penetration, liquid penetration, tearing and puncturing as well as ensuring sterility, cleanliness and minimal linting. These tests ensure products used in a clinical environment meet a minimum level of protection and quality, giving buyers and users clarity and confi dence when selecting products.

365 Healthcare drapes and gowns meet and in some cases exceed EN13795. Reports on 365 Healthcare’s Gowns and Drapes performance against the EN 13795 test methods are available on request.

Long Sleeve Fluid Protection Gowns

Long sleeve fl uid protection gowns are manufactured from soft durable polyethylene material. Impervious to fl uids, they provide an eff ective barrier against infection. Supplied in a darker blue to off er the clinician modesty.Thematerial is SMS used for its low linting properties and acceptance in a clinical environment. Single use scrub suits provide an excellent way of reducing the risk of infection, as microorganisms are less likely on a single use item than on reusable linen equivalents.

Patient examination gowns are manufactured from soft, heavy gauge, non-woven material and are suitable for patient use only. Short sleeves are preferred in some areas, for example when performing line insertion, and are cooler in the summer. With ties at the neck and waist, examination gowns overlap at the back to provide full, cool, comfortable and dignifi ed cover.

Low cost, long sleeve examination gowns manufactured from soft, heavy gauge polypropylene (PP) material, with elasticated cuff s. Premier examination gowns overlap at the back to provide full, comfortable and dignifi ed cover. Packaged individually and suitable for use by patients and/or staff .

SMS Patient gowns are also available to help provide patient dignity in a hospital environment. The material is soft enough to be comfortable and suffi ciently strong to be tear-resistant and not see-through, even if wet. The gowns are sleeveless allowing for access under the arms to the patient’s upper body.

Fluid Resistant Masks Type IIRHigh performance FluidProtect® masks are fl uid resistant to protect from blood borne pathogens. They are recommended for use where there is risk of fl uid contamination during splash or spray prone procedures.

Acording to WHO guidance a medical mask is a prevention measures that can be used to limit the spread of certain respiratory viral diseases including COVID-19.

Bacterial Filtration Effi ciency (BFE)BFE tests determine how much infective agent is retained by the face mask. This value is directly related to the amount of bacteria released into the air and retained in the mask fi lter layer. A higher BFE percentage indicates better protection levels from inff ective agents.

Particle Filtration Effi ciency (PFE)Measures the fi ltration effi ciency of a mask against small particles, usually 0.1 μ (micron).

All FluidProtect® masks are CE marked as medical devices in a accordance with the Medical Devices Directive 93/42 EEC.

All FluidProtect® masks exceed the requirements of EN 14683 Type IIR.

Type IIR standards require fl uid resistance of 120 mm/Hg (mercury), FluidProtect® masks provide a fl uid resistance of 160 mm/Hg (mercury) giving an additional 33% protection from strike-through.

Outer Protective Layer Distinct colour easily identifi es users wearing fl uid resistant masks and helps users ensure masks are worn with the correct side facing outwards.

Respirators

Respirators are intended to help reduce the wearer’s exposure to potentially infectious airborne pathogens.

UniProtect™ respirators feature;

• A large breathing chamber to create a cooler air exchange and help hold the mask away from the face for wearer comfort and ease of speech.

• A natural anti-fog seal and the soft inner facing layer that minimises discomfort.

• All respirators are individually CE marked and BS EN 149:2001 compliant.

The P2 respirators;

• Are recommended by the WHO for SARS and Avian Flu related outbreaks.

In addition, P3 valved respirators help to reduce the build up of heat which makes breathing easier. This is useful when worn for longer periods of time or when used in warm environments and those with elevated humidity.

The EN149: 2001 testing regime for respirators involves challenging the respirators with 0.6 micron particles of sodium chloride to determine their classifi cation (FFP1, P2 or P3). Respirators with PFEs exceeding 98% are FFP3. The testing measures the percentage of sodium chloride particulates fi ltered by the respirator and uses signifi cantly higher volumes of air compared to that used for face mask testing.

Uniprotect® respirators should be used in conjunction with other protection measures against viral diseases such as COVID-19.Respirators need to be tested for fi tting.

5. The paper wrap should be unfolded to reveal the swabs.

5.1 The paper wrap should be disgarded in the appropriate clinical waste receptacle.

6. The red tie cord should be removed from each bundle of tied 5 swabs, when appropriate for the counting procedure, and retained as an additional check for swab number accuracy 1.

7. The swabs should be individually checked, counted and recorded as per professional guidelines (for example AFPP) and according to hospital policy for swab counts.

1. The integrity of the pack should be checked prior to use as the swabs should not be used if the outer pack is damaged or is past its expiry date.

2. The outer pack should be peeled open from the top edge of the pack.

3. The area beyond the opaque line on the inner surface of the outer pack should not be touched, to maintain sterility of the inner pack.

4. The inner pack should be presented to the scrubbed practitioner in line with professional guidelines and Trust policy.

4.1 The outer pack should be disgarded in the appropriate waste receptacle.

8. Premier Detectors® X-Ray detectable swabs should not be cut, altered or opened out past the fi rst fold as this will expose raw edges of the gauze and may cause the X-Ray detectable line to be exposed on the surface of the gauze.

9 Following the appropriate counting procedure, used swabs should be disgarded in the appropriate clinical waste receptacle.

Non-Woven & PE Film365 Healthcare surgical drapes are made of either 2 or 3 layers of material which is formed together by heat and combines both non woven and PE fi lm to create strong, fl uid repellent drapes with a high hydrostatic head giving exceptional strikethrough protection against water, blood and other bodily fl uids. 365 Healthcare surgical drapes are low linting, minimising the risk of wound contamination. The strength of the materials is achieved by the 2 and 3 layer drapes being formated by heat and also facilitates patient protection whilst still providing patient comfort.

Polyethlyene (PE)Polyethylene - a plastic layer which is either clear or coloured.

2 Ply2 materials bonded together - in the case of the 365 Drapes 1 layer is always plastic (PE) to prevent infection.3 Ply3 layers of material bonded together - in the case of the 365 Drapes the middle layer is always plastic (PE) to provide a total barrier and prevent infection.
