I hope you are enjoying this Marian series. This week we con nue our in-depth look at what the Church teaches about Mary as we dive into the dogma of the Immaculate Concep on.

Offering a Mass Inten on The custom of reques ng a priest to offer the Mass for a specific inten on, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession, insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrec on. To request a Mass offering for the inten ons of a living person or for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, please feel free to contact the Parish Office. For more information and to make the request electronically (with optional payment by credit card) please visit corpuschristiphx.org/mass-inten on.

First, we must understand what it means to be born with the stain of original sin. Prior to the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, humanity had three preternatural gi s: infused knowledge, absence of concupiscence, and bodily immortality. That means, firstly, we were intended to have an in mate understanding and knowledge of God, His plan, and supernatural reali es. Secondly, we were intended to have a perfect balance of our passions, senses, emotions, intellect, and will in order to aid us in avoiding sin. Finally, it means our bodies were not meant to become ill or die. The result of the first sin was a loss of these preternatural gi s, not just for our first parents, but as a condi on to be passed on to every genera on a erward. I’m sure you can see in your own life, as I can in mine, how the loss of these gi s has affected humanity over time. The stain of that original sin and its consequences is present at the moment of conception of every single person, which we deal with as quickly as possible in the Sacrament of Baptism. In the case of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this stain of original sin was withheld from her soul at the moment of her concep on, allowing her to maintain all of the preternatural gi s that were intended for us from the beginning. Since her preternatural gifts were preserved at concep on, she was able to remain free from sin her en re life and therefore, Jesus and Mary were the only two humans on Earth to have never sinned.

If we go back to Pope Pius’ defini on, we see that Mary was spared from the stain of original sin and its effects by the merits of her Son, Jesus Christ. How is this possible since Mary was conceived long before Jesus was ever born, much less before he completed His saving work in His Passion and Resurrec on? If Mary was saved before she was born, does this negate Jesus as the Savior of the World? We answer this with a term called “preservative redemption.” Certainly, Mary needed to be saved as a member of humanity. However, there are two ways one can be saved. One, is that you can fall and then have the grace restored at your Bap sm and the other is that you can be prevented from falling in the first place. Think of it this way: You can fall into a hole in the ground and your savior can rescue you from that hole, or, your savior can prevent you from falling into the hole in the first place by pulling you back before you fall. Since God is outside of me and exists on an

eternal plane, the merits of Christ’s saving work were applied to Mary in a preserva ve way and she was spared from original sin and its effects.

Now the next ques on to answer is why was it necessary that Mary be conceived without sin? We can first look to Scripture for some answers. Beginning with Genesis 3:15, we read that God tells Satan that He will fix the mess that was made in Eden by pu ng a woman and her seed at enmity with Satan and his seed. Satan’s seed is sin and the woman and her seed that will defeat them is Mary and Jesus. If Mary and Jesus are to be directly pi ed against Satan and sin, there is no room for sin to exist in either of them. Jesus and Mary have to be in direct opposi on to Satan and sin in order for the ba le to be black and white and good vs. evil. Secondly, when the Angel Gabriel comes to Mary in Luke 1:28 he says, “Hail, full of grace.” There are two things to note here. Gabriel uses “Full of Grace” as a tle. He does not say, “You who are full of grace.” Secondly, when something is full of something, there is no room for anything else. So, if Mary is full of grace, there is no room for sin. This tle effec vely translates back to the tle of the Immaculate Concep on which represents one and the same reality.

As I move on to the next scriptural reference in defense of the dogma of the Immaculate Concep on, please keep in mind what I said a few weeks ago, that what the Church teaches about Mary protects what is true about Jesus. If you recall from the Old Testament, the Ark of the Covenant was the most holy object of the Israelites and in it was kept the Ten Commandments (the law), the rod of Aaron (the priesthood), and the manna from the desert (the bread of life). The Ark was so holy that, in order to not defile the holiness of it with sin, it could not be touched by human hands. It was carried on posts to avoid human contact. In 2 Samuel 6:6, we see the Ark of the Covenant being carried and the oxen stumble causing the Ark to shake. Uzzah ins nc vely reached his hand out to steady the Ark and God struck him dead then and there for even daring to touch it. Now, in the New Testament, we have Jesus who is the new law, the new priesthood, and the new bread of life. He is the fulfillment of everything that was contained in the most holy Ark of the Covenant. This means that Mary became the New Ark of the Covenant. It makes very li le sense that the earthly items represen ng the

Old Covenant should be spared from being touched by sinful humans, while the fulfillment in the New Covenant, the Son of God, should be carried around for nine months in a dirty, stained, unworthy vessel. Having been given the privilege of being the Immaculate Concep on, Mary protects the truth about who Jesus is and preserves His holiness.

Of course, our other source of authority is Tradition. Let’s review a few quotes from early Chris anity that indicate that the Church has always had a sense of the Immaculate Concep on as being a fi ng dogma of Mary, rather than it being a modern development in a modern Church.

“Mary was not infected by the venomous breath of the serpent.” - Origen, In Div. hom. 1 (d. 254)

“…Li me up not from Sarah but from Mary, a virgin not only undefiled, but a virgin whom grace had made inviolate, free of every stain of sin.”

- St. Ambrose, Commentary on Psalm 118, 22:30 (387 AD)

“Come, let us wonder at the virgin most pure, wondrous in herself, unique in creation, she gave birth, yet knew no man; her pure soul with wonder was filled, daily her mind gave praise in joy at the twofold wonder: her virginity preserved, her child most dear. Blessed is He who shone forth from her.”

– St. Ephraim the Syrian: Songs of Praise (d. 373)

“Having excepted the holy Virgin Mary, concerning whom, on account of the honor of the Lord, I wish to have absolutely no ques on when trea ng of sins—for how do we know what abundance of grace for the total overcoming of sin was conferred upon her, who merited to conceive and bear him in whom there was no sin?—so, I say, with the excep on of the Virgin, if we could have gathered together all those holy men and women, when they were living here, and had asked them whether they were without sin, what do we suppose would have been their answer?”

- Saint Augus ne, Doctor of the Church, Nature and Grace, 36:42 (415 AD)

“It is not to be believed that he, the Son of God, would be born of a Virgin, and take her flesh, were she in the slightest degree stained with original sin.”

-Saint Bernardine of Sienna, Quadr. s. 49, p. 1 (1380-1444)

Hopefully this provides a deeper understanding of

this Church teaching and why we are called to believe it. This week, spend some me reflec ng on the beauty of the Immaculate Concep on and how it, in fact, glorifies Jesus and His saving work in a world filled with sin. Also reflect on Mary’s humility, in that, everything that is true about her points us directly back to the truth of her Son.

St. Vincent de Paul Corpus Christi Conference

The COVID-19 pandemic placed restric ons and limita ons on most of us these past several months. It even limited how the St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) annual water drive was to be handled. However, it didn't limit the generosity of our parishioners.

In order to avoid increased volunteer contact and interaction during the water drive, only monetary donations were collected. From the support of Corpus Christi parishioners, SVdP collected $5,461.00 from the drive! One hundred percent of the monetary proceeds went towards water for those in most need.

In addi on to helping get water for the homeless throughout the valley, a flocknote went out to SVdP's associate members asking for food dona ons to be used for those in need in our local community. Our conference was over-joyed and extremely thankful for the turn out. We were able to collect enough food to help feed those in need through the summer months. We are so grateful to be blessed with such a generous parish.

At every SVdP mee ng the following is prayed: "Lord, it is through your inspi-ra on that so many people are generous in providing us with the resources to serve those in need. Bless and protect our benefactors who sacrifice and share so that our hands will be filled with gi s."

Thank you, Corpus Chris parish, for your con nued support. You are awesome!

USA Today Publishes Fr. Dave Pivonka’s Op-Ed on HBO Max Movie, Unpregnant

In response to Unpregnant, a forthcoming HBO “comedy” about abor on, Franciscan University of Steubenville President, Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, and alumna, Maureen (Malloy ’92) Ferguson (Senior Fellow, The Catholic Associa on) wrote an opinion piece, “Hey HBO, Abor on Isn’t a Joke,” published by USA Today on September 3.

In their strongly worded commentary, Father Dave and Maureen object to Unpregnant’s use of comedy to mask “the loss of innocent life that accompanies every abor on.” They urge all to turn to prayer for the producers and actresses involved with this movie, to “do something concrete” to help mothers in difficult pregnancies, and if you have a subscrip on to HBO or HBO Max, to cancel it and email the chief executive of Warner Bros., Ann Sarnoff, and tell her why you are cancelling ([email protected]).

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Times of Trial

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our na on and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protec on of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this me of trial and tes ng, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus.

Amen.

Worship Aid — Prayers & Responses for Mass

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 145) The Lord is near to all who call upon him.

Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Stewardship Prayer

My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. We will be friendly, if I am. We will be holy, if I am.

Our pews will be filled, if I help fill them. We will do great work, if I work. We will be prayerful, if I pray. We will make generous gi s to many causes, if I am a generous giver. We will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them in.

Our parish will be a place of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who help make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want our parish to be.

Amen.
