A Leaner Fat TuesdayCook jambalaya for friends and family this
Mardi Gras, but cut out excess fat and calorieswith more healthful ingredients. Use skinlesschicken and turkey sausage. Add extra tomatoesand mix in brown rice instead of the starchierwhite variety.
Dressed in RedA red dress is more than just a fashion statement. It’s
also a symbol of the fight against heart disease and acrucial reminder embraced by women of every age, size, color and status, from your next-door neighbor to thefirst lady of the White House.
The Heart Truth campaign, sponsored by theNational Heart, Lung and Blood Institute since 2002,uses the red dress image to encourage women to learnmore about heart disease and take measures to protecttheir health. The dress reminds women that heartdisease is not merely a men’s health issue; in fact, it’sthe No. 1 cause of death for women.
Every February since 2003, the Red Dress CollectionFashion Show is held during New York Fashion Week, with models and celebrities walking the runway in reddesigner dresses.
Even more glamour was added to the event in 2005with the unveiling of the First Ladies Red DressCollection. The collection features red gowns, suits andother garments worn by first ladies, including Lady BirdJohnson, Pat Nixon, Rosalyn Carter, Nancy Reagan,Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, who is the officialfounding ambassador for the Heart Truth campaign.
The First Ladies Red Dress Collection has appeared atvarious museums, along with designer dresses from theannual fashion show in New York, to raise awarenessabout heart disease. Educational programs and healthscreenings are usually presented in conjunction withthe exhibit.
