Becoming a ‘Sunsmart’ school is something we must do.

In order for that to happen, we must insist that students wear hats while they are outside in the sun. A bucket hat, with its narrow brim is inadequate; caps only provide protection for the nose and face; and our current white canvas Primary hat is rigid, difficult to keep ‘white’, and has a drawstring that fits under the chins of our young students.

We are virtually out of stock of the white hats, so the move to a new hat is timely.

From the start of 2014, we will adopt a new school hat for use by students across all year levels in the school. It will be navy blue; the drawstring is on the top of the hat; it is lightweight; and it is can be ‘stuffed into a schoolbag’ and retain its shape. (The current white hat will be perfectly acceptable as we transition to the blue hat).

The Secondary School must also become ‘Sunsmart’ so the hat will be compulsory across the school. It will cost $20 and be available in the Uniform Shop.

It will require a culture change for our Secondary students, who are not used to wearing a hat outside at school. However, our responsibility is to protect them from the ravages of the sun, so wearing a hat will need to become the norm. Students will not have to wear the hat to and from school. It can be stored easily in their lockers or their school bags.

Tim EganAssistant Principal (Head of Secondary)

from the head of secondaryStudent excHAngeFive of our Year 10 students have been enjoying their exchange with Le Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal, Canada. They are experiencing school lessons in french and life as a student in a big city. Their school days are quite long. They shadow their host brothers and sisters for classes in the mornings (four hours) and then after lunch our students have intensive french tutoring for the remaining four hours of the school day. There have been plenty of opportunities for tourist activities including an ice hockey game, shopping and major tourist attractions. Here are a couple of photos of the girls out and about.

TecHnology uSe reminderIt is fantastic that many students have embraced the BYOT program in the college. I would like to remind families and students of a few points, particularly regarding the use of smaller devices such as iPods and iPhones.

Devices should not be used for taking videos/photos during break times. This • is permitted under supervision of teachers for class purposes only.Students are not to make calls or text during class time. Again, this is permitted • if teachers or office staff are made aware of the situation and should be limited to break times. All usage of technology should be for educational purposes and under staff • supervision.

It is important that the college is aware of contact that is made with parents, particularly if it involves arriving late or leaving early. We have an absentee procedure that aims to keep all students safe and one that informs us of students’ whereabouts at all times. Your assistance with this would be appreciated.

PreSentAtion ceremonyAs I have mentioned in past newsletters, the presentation ceremony at the end of the year will be here at BDC on Tuesday 3 December commencing 12:45pm. The dress code for students at this ceremony will be as follows. Students who are receiving awards (they will be notified), must wear their white shirts and ties. When they move to the stage to receive their award they must put their blazer on. Students in the audience and not receiving awards can wear their summer uniform. There is no air conditioning in the Branson Centre so we aim to make it as comfortable as possible for all students.

In week 9 of term, the following program will take place:

Monday 2 December - Day 8 of the timetable. - Presentation Ceremony rehearsal 9am-12:00pm

Tuesday 3 December - Presentation Ceremony 12:45pm

Wednesday 4 December - Day 6 of timetable - Boambee Bay picnic afternoon - Cambodia Tour departsEnjoy your week.

There is a team of Lay people and Clergy in The Diocese of Grafton currently conducting the interview process as we prayerfully look for a new bishop. Could you please cover in prayer those who are involved as they undertake this most important task.

Throughout our journey may we grow and reap the good harvest as we too discover Jesus together.

lyon and toyama visits, february-march 2014

careers news

Early next year our college will be hosting two school visits, the first by students of Centre Scolaire Aux Lazaristes, Lyon, France and the second by students of Toyama University of International Studies High School, Toyama, Japan. We are looking for host families to accommodate these students during their stay with us. The French students will be in Coffs Harbour from 26 February to 4 March and the Japanese students from 9 to 17 March. We encourage particularly those students studying either French or Japanese in 2014 to consider hosting a student as this will give them the opportunity to form relationships with their peers in the country of the language they are studying and to use their language skills in a real way. However, all BDC families with an interest in other cultures are invited to participate. Being a host to a student on one of these visits can lead to further opportunities for travel and study overseas. This year two French students participated in longer term one-to-one exchange programs that were made possible through contacts and connections made during the Aux Lazaristes visit in 2012.

Letters and Expression of Interest forms will be sent home this week and early next week with all students studying elective French and Japanese in 2014. Alternatively, any interested parents can email me directly at [email protected].

Welcome bAck conlAn And AlexAnderThis week we welcome back to school Conlan Brehaut (Year 10) and Alexander Stafford (Year 9) who have just spent seven weeks in Lyon staying with French families and participating in school life at Centre Scolaire Aux Lazaristes. We congratulate both boys not only on their adventurous spirit and their willingness to explore a different culture but also on being wonderful ambassadors for our college while they were in France. We hope to facilitate further exchanges with this school in the future. Any interested students are encouraged to speak with Conlan and Alexander about their experiences in Lyon.

Congratulations and best wishes to our Year 12 student leavers. We are proud of their efforts in the recent HSC exams and reaching this milestone in their lives. Also congratulations to all our students who have been successful with gaining an early university course offer.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Youth Recruitment and Work Readiness Day at Park Beach Plaza on Tuesday 12 November. This was a joint initiative that is proudly supported and facilitated by Youth Directions, Park Beach Plaza, Park Beach Home Base, the Regional Schools Careers Advisers Network (Government and Non-Government Schools and Employment Insight. The aim of the day was to allow local high school students to participate in interviews with local employers for a range of part-time jobs as well as a few apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities. The feedback has been very positive with all our students reporting to me that it was very worthwhile.

A day at Sydney university by Jaxon Jager and brick bradfordWe both really enjoyed the people and the campus, and for me it was an eye opening experience. Before going to the event, I thought uni was just to go get a degree and find a job, but people there showed a different side to uni I hadn’t even heard of. There are these clubs, they call them societies, and there is one for anything you can think of. Including the quidditch and chocolate societies. I look at university as not just a launching point into a career, but a platform to meet different people, find interests I didn’t know I had and have a good time.

Karin LisleAssistant Principal (Head of Primary)

from the head of primaryI am looking outside my window and watching the little children playing with Madam Moo and her beautiful red hat. I love to see children come to this school smiling and happy. I talk to children about how they like school and mostly the responses are positive, even from those students who are ready to move on to high school. The Shadowing Days are going well, it is great to see so many children take changes in their stride. We cannot as parents protect children from the worries they may have, but when we talk about how to deal with change it certainly helps. I am sure over the holiday period you will find time to discuss all the new things your children will have to deal with in the new year and give them some strategies for dealing with any concerns they have about the new year at school.

Progress is being made on finalising school reports so they can be emailed to families in the last week of term. If you have changed your email address can you please let Lyn Mercer ([email protected]) know so she can enter the new information into the database.

Meet Your New Teacher Day will be held on Tuesday 26 November. New students to the school will be integrated into classes and between recess and lunch, all students will go to their 2014 classrooms to meet their new teacher and also see who the other students in their class will be. This alleviates the worries some children carry during the long Christmas break. The classes have been finalised and there will be no alterations to the arrangements. Children are encouraged to wear mufti on this day.

Carols night will also be held on this night and it would be lovely to see all families come to share the joy of Christmas with us.

We are also gearing up for Presentation Day that will be held on 3 December at 10am. I encourage all parents to attend, if your child is to receive an award you will be contacted shortly.

The Community Carols night is fast approaching and will go ahead on Tuesday 26 November 2013, in the Green Room. Some classes have been rehearsing performances for this event and all others are invited to join in on the night, no rehearsing necessary, just fun and friendship.

Last weekend, the open boys Futsal team travelled to Tweed Heads to compete in the Qld/NSW Australasian Futsal Championships. The boys played exceptionally well to win all three games on Saturday, but lost one game on Sunday. With three teams finishing on the same points, it came down to a count-back, with the teams with the most goals ‘for’ going through. Unfortunately our boys lost that competition by one goal. If ever there was a team that didn’t deserve to go home, and miss out on the semi’s, it was our boys.

Congratulatiions to the following team members for representing their college with such skill and distinction: Je Jacobs, Noah Bedford, Ben Jones, Tanner Drew, Jake Ashley, Josh Jarrett, Gordon Adams, Jonothan Chan, Jack Malouf and Zac Freuden.

BDC now has an official Rowing Team! Eli White, Connor Schumer-Caldwell, Max Handley. and Connor Pallet will be competing in their first official Regatta this weekend at the Grafton High regatta. Please wish the boys luck!
