PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to ASDAL 2013!

As President of the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Librarians, I wish to welcome you to our 33rd Annual Conference!

Our theme this year, ‘The bedrock of Seventh-day Adventist Librarianship: What never changes or what should never change’ seeks to bring to light the core principles of Christian librarianship in general and Seventh-day Adventist librarianship in particular. What values and philosophies do we bring to our professional work regardless of whether we find ourselves in academia, public or school librarianship, Adventist or public institutions?

As you attend the meetings, I hope that you will reflect on what values are core to the way you practice Seventh-day Adventist librarianship and on the ideas that others will bring to encourage you. The formal presentations are an essential part of ASDAL conferences, but we also seek to create the opportunity to socialize with and share ideas informally with Adventist librarians from around the world. Meal times and tour days all offer the opportunity to get to know your fellow Adventist librarians a bit better – and we hope you will have the opportunity to make new friends, reestablish old friendships, and be inspired by the work that your fellow Adventist Librarians are accomplishing.

As President of ASDAL and the reference librarian at Walla Walla University (WWU), I wish to welcome you not only to the conference, but also to our corner of the Pacific Northwest and WWU. May your visit be fruitful and inspirational and may you return to your home libraries empowered to continue God’s work through the profession you have chosen.

A. With Full-text, Who Needs an Index? Alfredo Vergel, Public Services and Special Collections Librarian, Southwestern Adventist University Increased interest in Ellen White’s letters and manuscripts sparked an effort to make available an electronic index of

that literary corpus. Such a project began last summer at Southwestern Adventist University. While full-text search is expected to be available by the summer of 2015, metadata remains a very useful access point for actual content and can be expected to aid researchers well into the future.

B. Researching Ellen White’s Personal Libraries: Maximizing Googling Warren H. Johns Special Collections Cataloger, Loma Linda University Libraries. In the late 1970s, Adventist pastor Walter Rea charged Ellen White with plagiarism. The White Estate decided to create a list of all the books published before 1915 found in Ellen White’s private and office libraries when she died. Ron Graybill, Tim Poirier, and Warren Johns embarked on this project. Nearly 90% of these books are now accessible on the Loma Linda University library’s website.
