Dear Parents, Students, and Patrons:
It’s been a fast four weeks since our last CMS Newsletter and major events that have occurred at CMS include the November 11th Veterans Day Ceremony and our Trimes-ter 1 CATS Assembly that was held on November 18th. A photogallery of the former is featured on pages 6-7 and it was an honor for studetns and staff to present this year’s ceremony while the latter is showcased on page 6 as we at CMS truly believe it’s important to recognize students for their achievements.
This issue of the CMS Newsletter also contains the No-vember and December “Wildcats of the Week” and “Wild-cats of the Month.”

Starting last 2015-16 school year, Carlisle Middle School began holding end-of-the-trimester gatherings called C.A.T.S. Assemblies. C.A.T.S. stands for “Conduct Academics aTtendance & Service” and the purpose of these as-semblies is to recognize student successes in the four main “CATS” areas. The creation of this event stemmed with the fact that CMS wanted to recognize students for their academic achievements, especially since (beginning last year also) they now earn a letter grade for every class they take which is then calculated into grade point average (GPA).
As a former high school principal who created and held similar assemblies at my previous school, I believe it’s important to recognize, celebrate, and acknowledge students’ achievements and have seen the positive ef-fects on students including striving to excel academically. When I suggested this idea to the staff of CMS about having such assemblies to acknowledge grades (as well as the other areas), they were on board 100% and thus a new tradition at CMS was born. We always invite parents/guardians to the C.A.T.S. Assemblies and their at-tendance has increased from 15 to around 75 (at our biggest one). To say the least they’re becoming a big deal.
Just how big of deal? Well, I truly believe that anytime you recognize and acknowledge students for the main reason they are in school—learning/academics—plus other meaningful aspects such as posi-tive behavior which includes the reduction of office discipline referrals (ODRs), excellent attendance, and service to others… we’re reinforcing what is important when it comes to being a learner and glob-al citizen in the 21st Century while simultaneously building students up for their accomplishments.
Our C.A.T.S. Assemblies also include recognizing students who have been named “Wildcats of the Week” & “Wildcats of the Month” plus we usually feature a special performance by either the Choir or Band. Last year, we had a guest speaker in Mr. Joe Cason who passionately spoke about/addressed anti-bullying and “doing right” to others while some of our other C.A.T.S. Assemblies have had segments of “Neat Student Tricks” and dance routines by the staff. At our most recent C.A.T.S. Assembly held on November 18th, Mr. Seiler, CMS Assistant Principal, was recognized for his fearless participation in repelling off the Financial Center building in downtown Des Moines which raised over $1,600 for Special Olympics. We also showed a video that was featured on WHO Channel 13 News about one of our students, Addeline Morlan, who runs a Joyologist Club aiming to help all students thrive in CMS.
So far, during the four (4) total CATS Assemblies we’ve held, CMS has recognized a total of:
1,111 total Honor Roll students230 total “Wildcats of the Week” 11 total “Wildcats of the Month”12 Service Award Winners 95.23% Average Daily Attendance by the entire student body45% total reduction in ODRs the past two school years
Yes, recognizing students not only builds their self-confidence, but also provides further motivation to do well.
