Toronto Police Service 32 Division - 30 Ellerslie Ave. Willowdale, ON M2N 1X8 – Non-emergency: 416-808-3200 – Emergency: 9 1 1 1 32 DIVISION May 2010 From the desk of: Superintendent Bob Clarke Unit Commander 32 Division Spring is finally upon us and with it comes much activity beyond the rising grass and blossoming flowers. May brings with it the annual Police Week from May 09-15, 2010. The highlight of the week is our annual Police Week open house event which will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 4pm to 8pm. Please join us on the front lawn for an opportunity to meet many of your officers and to get a tour of the station. We will be serving food and light refreshments that have been contributed by some of our community partners. In the news this month you may also have begun to hear more about the upcoming G20 Economic Summit being held in downtown Toronto in late June. The meetings will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Front St. West near the CN tower. While the summit only runs on June 25th and 26th it is expected that extensive protests will run for about 10 days. Protestors from across Canada and around the world are expected to attend the summit to voice their wide ranging opinions about what the G20 leaders will be discussing. Previous summit experience shows us that individuals and small and often violent groups of protestors attend these events. Extensive security arrangements will be in place to protect the summit delegates, protestors and downtown property owners. There will be some effects on policing services at 32 Division, although plans are in place to ensure that the impact will be minimal. Thirty-two Division officers will still be on patrol and responding to your calls for service. Also on a local note, please remember that the nice spring weather brings everyone outside so we all need to remember to take extra care while driving around our neighbourhoods. TRAFFIC CONCERNS

During the normal course of any given driving day, I find it absolutely astonishing that so many people continue to drive while using handheld devices such as cell-phones. Without going into all the details of the recently enacted handheld devices amendments to the Highway Traffic Act, I cannot understand why so many drivers continue to undertake this extremely dangerous practice as if it doesn’t apply to them. As in most other jurisdictions, driving in the Province of Ontario is a privilege and should be taken seriously. Why? Simply put, lives depend on it! When driving a motor vehicle you must have 100% of your attention focused on your driving. There are numerous and constantly changing conditions around

your vehicle as well as a variety of distractions that already need your undivided attention. Your reaction time is highly dependant on the level of your attention to driving conditions. Adding texting or dialling a cell-phone into this mix and your attention to driving is heavily compromised. Recent studies suggest that engaging in these types of activities puts your driving ability on par with being impaired by alcohol or drugs. Although the law allows you to use a wired or wireless “Bluetooth” type earpiece and voice recognition systems on your phone, recent studies also concluded that the level of distraction is more-or-less the same as when holding the phone in your hand. Life is precious folks! Our lives and more importantly the lives of our children depend on it. Think about it, a social or business call is not worth risking your life or anyone else’s life. Please put the phones away while driving and wait until you are parked safely off the roadway before making or receiving calls. In addition to cell phones, the law also applies to televisions, computers or other devices including GPS units. The definition simply states “when the display screen is visible to the driver”. Fines range from $84 - $125 plus court costs. Causing a collision while using a cell phone or other handheld device may also result in a charge of Careless Driving, which upon conviction, includes 6 demerit points and a fine of $400 plus court costs. A conviction for Careless Driving will also have expensive long-term ramifications for your insurance policy. If you have any concerns, questions or driving complaints please contact me.

Crime Prevention Tip-of-the-Month

Seniors - Watch Out for Door to Door Salespersons and Con Artists

Just recently I was contacted by a property manager of a large condominium building in 32 Division. A number of senior residents were taken advantage of by a salesman who came to their door offering to clean their carpets at a special price because they were already working in the building. The prices were “special” because they were very inflated and then the work was substandard.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself or your elderly parents or neighbours:

• Be wary of door-to-door salespersons,

• Watch out for people coming to your door offering services. They often “sell” it to you as a “Special Offer” because they are already “working in your building or neighbourhood”. These services are often sold at inflated prices,

• Don’t be pressured to agree to anything, just say “no thank-you”,

• Don't fall for anything that sounds too good to be true such as - a free vacation, sweepstakes prizes,

• Watch out for a young man or women wanting money to get home to see their sick mother,

• Never give out your credit card, phone card, social insurance number, or bank account information to anyone that calls you on the phone. Banks and reputable companies don’t contact customers in this manner,

• Don't let anyone rush you into signing anything - an insurance policy, a sales agreement or other contract. Have someone you trust check it over for you first,

• If you are suspicious, contact a friend, neighbour or family member for advice. Also call your local Police or Crime Stoppers at 416-221-TIPS or Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501.
