27. Describe the Renaissance and why “rebirth” is a good name for this time period.

The name rebirth is appropriate because new ideas spread, technologies were created, and life during the Renaissance became much better! New ideas like “the world is round” developed during the Renaissance, which sparked the Age of Exploration. People really started to question ideas they were told by the church, so the Reformation occurred. New

technologies like the printing press were invented, so education spread. People lived more comfortably and lived longer because of more goods, money, trading, and ideas.

Page 39: 32. Cross out number 32 on your study guide!

37. What motivates people to take great risk to explore unknown territories?

People take a great risk to explore unknown territories. Sometimes people are motivated by the desire to gain wealth, power, or natural resources

like the country of England did by colonizing places in North America. Sometimes people are motivated to explore unknown territories because they have

created faster, safer technologies. For example, Henry the Navigator created a caravel, which was a

safer, faster ship. Other inventions that also encouraged people to take great risk were the

compass and the astrolabe because people could locate how to get to and from places better. Finally, people often take great risk to avoid unsafe places

like the Mediterranean Sea when the Crusades were taking place.
