I hope you all had a relax- ing and enjoyable break over the holidays. I am very excited about the events and opportunies in store this year and look forward to working with you all. As we start a new school year we ask God’s blessing on us; students, staff and families. Students are now in new classes, the work is new and somemes challenging but each day we know Jesus walks with us and together we’ll achieve great things. We pray that we all do the very best we can at Holy Spirit; to live, to love and to grow in Christ. Amen. A warm welcome to our new staff members who have joined the Holy Spirit school community this year: Bre Wilson Yr. 3/4 classroom teacher Angelina Andreou Yr. 3/4 classroom teacher Alex Ward Inclusion Support assistant Helen Wallace Inclusion Support assistant It has been great to see so many excited and happy faces as I visited classrooms this morning. A special welcome also to the new fam- ilies and students who have come from far and wide to join our Holy Spirit school community this year. I look forward to geng to know you all throughout the year and hope that you enjoy your me at Holy Spirit. Next Friday, the 9 th of February, will be holding three school events. These events are our Opening School Mass, our Parent Infor- maon Session and our Family Fun Evening. Our Opening School Mass will be held at 8.30am in the Holy Spirit Church. Parents are invited to join us for Mass and for coffee/tea in the staffroom aſterwards. Our Parent Informaon session will run from 4.30 – 5.30pm and is a great opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher, find out about the curriculum, behavioural expectaons, homework requirements and any other class rounes and planned events. The Family Fun Evening will be held at the Casuarina Swimming Pool from 5.30pm – 7pm. Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic dinner and meet new and old friends. The inflata- ble water playground has been booked for the children. The entry cost is at pool prices. Goal Seng Sessions with your child’s teacher will be held on Monday 12th February or Tuesday 13 th February between 3:00pm and 6:00pm. The purpose of this meeng is to have me with your child’s teacher to discuss your hopes and dreams for their achieve- ments during 2018. Bookings for these meengs are done online. Parents are asked to go to the website ( www.schoolinterviews.com.au) and log on with the code (97f6v) and make their booking. I encourage you all to be acvely involved in our school community and to work in partnership with us as we teach, guide, care and support your children to achieve their best academically, spiritually, socially, physically and emoonally. A reminder our school canteen is closed this week (Week 1) and will be open on Thursday and Friday next week (Week 2). Principal’s Reflection

Dear Parents, Welcome to all students, staff and families to the start of the 2018 school year. I hope you all had a relax-ing and enjoyable break over the holidays. What we are learning in Term One Literacy: In transition, we are learning our sounds and how to

sound out and blend back. Year 1’s and year 2’s will use the Jolly Phonics & Jolly Grammar Programs. Students will learn sounds and spelling alternatives each week. All students will be learning sight words. We are going to be looking at how to write a procedure and persuasive text.

Mathematics: Students will be exploring place value, number,

number sense, addition, subtraction and measurement this term.

Religious Education: In Term 1, students will be learning about

the church and community. Students will explore God’s presence in creation. We will also study and celebrate the season of Lent and Easter.

Science: T/1 will be exploring the unit Growing Well. Grade 1-2

will be investigating the unit Watch it Grow

HASS: All students will explore how family events are

remembered and how stories about families are communicated. They explore present and past family life and identify significant personal and family events.

Health: Students will be exploring concepts keeping safe.

Art: Students will be experimenting with various art materials

and processes to create a number of visual artwork pieces relating to topics covered in class.

Weekly Schedule

Homework – Term 1 Homework will start in Week 3. At home students are encouraged to:

Read on a daily basis for up to 15 minutes

Revise Jolly Phonics sounds – T/1

Practice individual sight word lists

Practice spelling words using different activities

Reminders Students are asked to bring the following to school each day:

Hats Fruit for fruit break Water bottle Library bag and readers

New library bags can be purchased for $10 at the front office. Class Dojo points will be awarded each week to those who remember their library bag.

Narratives and Persuasive writing. We will also cover grammar concepts, spelling, reading and comprehension strategies.

Mathematics: Students will be exploring place value, number,

time and measurement this term. We will also be revising and consolidating numerous concepts taught throughout the previous year.

Religious Education: In Term 1, Students will be learning

about the Church and its role in the community. We will also study and celebrate the season of Lent and Easter.

Science: The unit “Beneath our Feet” provides opportunities for

students to explore how natural processes and human activity shape their surroundings. Students will develop an understanding of soils, rocks and landscapes and how they change over time.

History: During Term 1, the students will be researching stories

of the First Fleet, including reasons for the journey, who travelled to Australia, and their experiences following arrival.

Health: Students will be exploring ways to communicate and

interact for health and well-being and learning of ways they can contribute to healthy and active communities.

ICT/Art: ICT and Art this term will be integrated with English as

a part of our Narrative unit.
