Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to the 2014 school year. This week has been a very positive beginning to what is shaping up to be another fantastic year at Boambee. I want to thank the school staff for their preparation during the holidays to
ensure that classrooms and resources were organised
for a smooth transition back to school.

Stage Managers for each team are as follows:
Early Stage 1 – Mrs Ferguson

Stage 2 – Mrs Donoghoe / Mrs Gale

Parents are asked to contact class teachers and/or
Stage Managers for information regarding class, Stage
or school organisation. Individual student issues are best discussed with class teachers as they know their
students and school setting. We openly welcome parents into our school and value the positive partnerships developed with our parent community. We do ask however, that parents make appointments with
class teachers so that quality time can be given to provide information or to address concerns.
Mrs Donoghoe will continue in her role, School Welfare Coordinator in 2014. In this role Mrs Donoghoe will be
working in classrooms with teachers to further embed the Positive Behaviour for Learning Boambee BEST framework and student wellbeing programs. Mrs Donoghoe is also a point in contact for parents who
may have concerns or questions relating to student
wellbeing.
Mrs Annie Harman continues as our School Counsellor and will be on site each Tuesday. Please contact the
school office for appointments with Annie.
Mrs Robinson is off class for Term 1 and will be supporting teachers with the implementation of the
Australian Curriculum English syllabus.
Mrs Phillips has taken up the role as the school’s Reading Recovery teacher and will also be working with teachers on school initiatives engaging and building
student capacity as 21st Century learners.
Miss Goddard will continue our fabulous school music program and we welcome Mrs Thompson back to the library. Mrs Holden will continue as the School Learning
and Support Teacher four mornings a week.
A fabulous school team doing their Boambee BEST!

2014 New Students
Welcome to our new students. This week we have enrolled 25 new students. It is wonderful to have you as
part of the Boambee School Community.
Welcome New Staff
We extend a very warm welcome to our new staff members. Ms Holden has been appointed permanently following the retirement of Ms Maerz. Mrs Gale,
technically is not new but has returned following 12 months as a Regional Literacy Consultant. Mrs Gale is substantively one of Boambee’s three Assistant Principals. Mrs Grant has been appointed in a temporary
capacity as the 15th teacher. Miss Goddard will teach K-4 music programs. Stage 3 music will be taught by Mr
Martin.
Forming a 15th Class
With the increase in enrolments we will form a 15th class
on Monday. Unfortunately the demountable classroom to accommodate this class will be some weeks before it is on site. The additional Year 1 class will operate from the library until the demountable is in place. Mrs Grant has
been placed on this class in a temporary capacity until the position is determined by Department of Education
and Communities staffing procedures.
Engage in Learning
The focus for the first five weeks across the school will be — Live Life Well at School. Classes will be
investigating some of the following areas:
Learning—What makes a good learner?
Healthy food choices
Building Positive Relationships
Building a Positive Class/School Environment
As parents you can be involved in your child’s school life in many different ways. We encourage you to talk after
school with your child, looking to celebrate the positives within the day. Some questions might include:
Other things you can do:
Pack the lunch box together
Ensure that a water bottle is packed each day
Volunteer—canteen, BINGO, classroom
Join the P&C
Come to parent information sessions
Try and get to special events—Sports
Carnivals, Assembly presentations etc We appreciate that many parents and caregivers are
working and have other commitments in busy lives. However, by being involved in a positive way with your child’s school can help build self esteem and a strong community spirit.
A Term 1 calendar has been included with this week’s newsletter. Additional things will need to be added as the Term progresses, however we aim to provide parents
with advanced notice of special events and potential costs for activities each term.

School Sport—Gymnastics Gymnastics will be the school sport program for Term 1. This is a very popular sport choice for students and
develops a range of physical skills. Gymnastics is part of the K-6 Physical Education syllabus and a requirement of the Board of Studies. Gymnastics is a specialist discipline and is best taught by trained professionals. The school
engages the expertise of instructors from Star Jumps Gymnastics. The program runs for 8 weeks commencing Week 3. with
K-2 students on Thursday and Years 3-6 on Friday. The cost of the program is $40:00 per child, this amount can be paid weekly or in full. Permission notes will be sent home next Monday. Permission notes are to be
returned by Wednesday 12th February. School Swimming Carnival The school swimming carnival is Wednesday 19th of
February. Information and permission notes will come home next week. This carnival is open to Year 2 students who are turning 8 years this year and can swim 25m—50m. All Year 3-6 students are expected to attend as part
of the sport calendar for 2014. Assembly Time Information regarding assemblies will be in next weeks
newsletter. Term 1 assemblies will be on a Wednesday afternoon due to gymnastics in the hall on Friday. Assemblies will not start until Week 5.
Bonville Physical Culture Club Classes resume 17th February 2014. Come along to our registration days on Monday 3rd and 10th February from 3.30pm to 5.30pm in Boambee School Hall.

Healthy School Canteen
The school canteen has always operated within the guidelines of the Healthy Kids Association—Fresh Taste Canteen policy. The energy and thought our Canteen Manager Terri Drayton gives to servicing the school
community with healthy food choices is to be commended. The Term 1 canteen menu has been included with this weeks newsletter. The colour coding is
to highlight the green and amber food choices available.
An outline of the colour is as follows:
GREEN FOODS—can be eaten every day as part of a healthy diet. Green foods include: fruit, vegetables,
yoghurt, sandwiches, some milks, some hot foods.
GO ahead and enjoy them!
AMBER FOODS—these foods are not as healthy for you so go SLOW and choose carefully. Too many of these foods may affect your health as they have moderate
levels of saturated fat and/or added sugar and salt.
RED FOODS— STOP! These foods are not healthy and you should only have them occasionally. Red foods
include chocolates, fizzy drinks, chips, pies and sausage
rolls. These are NOT SOLD at the school canteen.
An occasional RED day such as a sausage sizzle or cake stall once a term is permitted as part of a special school
event or fundraiser.
We encourage parents to promote healthy food choices by packing green lunch boxes or ordering from the green
section of the canteen menu. You can’t make an Amber food green but you can certainly green-up your canteen
order.
Green canteen orders attract honey bee awards!
Don’t forget to contact Terri or the school office if you are available to help in the canteen. A fabulous way to
support the school and your child.
