31A (Cambridge M.R.C. - 27th Cambridge Model Railway Exhibition 14th April 2018

FOREWORD

On behalf of the 31A (Cambridge) Model Railway Club, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to our twenty seventh Model Railway Exhibition and our seventh here at Sawston Village College.

We have tried to cater for both the enthusiast and the mildly interested and should you have any questions, the exhibitors will be happy to answer them. Please do not touch the exhibits or go beyond the barriers unless invited. The exhibitors are not being unfriendly, merely protecting what in many cases is a large investment in both time and money. We have taken an additional classroom at the college this year in order to accommodate all of the exhibits - we hope that you will find the layouts on show interesting.

Also this year, for the first time at our exhibition, Cambridge Model Engineers are operating train rides behind some of their live steam models. Their demonstration track will be in the courtyard outside the entrance to the exhibition.

If you would like more information about the hobby in general or 31A (Cambridge) club in particular, please see a Club member behind the club layouts or stand (No's. 18, 21 or 22). Our club has vacancies for new members, so whether you are a beginner or experienced modeller, looking to join a club, please ask for an information sheet.

I would like to thank all the exhibitors, for all their skill and hard work, without whom we could not have staged this event. Finally thank you for attending this exhibition. We hope that it has proved enjoyable, and that you will visit us again.

List of Exhibitors

1 – Cambridge & District Model Engineering Society Layout

Live Steam Rides are offered by the Cambridge & District Model Engineering Society

31A (Cambridge M.R.C. - 27th Cambridge Model Railway Exhibition 14th April 2018

26 – Bedford Road TMD O Gauge Ralph Nuttall

Bedford Road TMD is constructed to 0 Gauge Finescale standards and represents a small yard and traction maintenance depot, somewhere in the East Midlands. It is set in the late 1980s. The old goods shed is now a wagon repair facility. The model is not based on a specific location, but the buildings are based on ones at Peterborough and Bedford. The model is analogue controlled, but the intention is to change to digital control in the future. Buildings are made from card, faced with plastic bricks. Locomotives and rolling stock are a mixture of scratch built and proprietary items.

27 –. Sutherland N Gauge Felixstowe Area Group (formally named Kansas) of the N Gauge Society

“Kansas” is a fictitious location somewhere to the South-West of Kansas City. The line is owned by the Union Pacific, but the Santa Fe has running powers. The main line is crossed by a branch of the Rock Island, which connects to an industrial area, featuring switching operations. The layout is operated as summer 1956. The main line is designed to operate the maximum possible length of trains within the limits of the layout, and these are of prototypical length. For example, the Santa Fe “El Capitan” is represented by 12 cars, hauled by 4 “F Unit” diesel locos, while the Union Pacific “City of St Louis” is represented by 11 cars hauled by 3 “E Units”. Freight trains are of equivalent length, some of those of the UP being hauled by large steam locomotives, including the 4-8-4 FEF-3 and the famous 4-8-8-4 “Big Boy”. Appropriate multiple unit diesels are used for other freight trains. The main line is DC controlled, for optimum simplicity of operation. The branch line and industrial area are usually operated using DCC, allowing the use of multiple switching locos. Switching of cars is made using Microtrains magnetic knuckle couplers, which permit automatic uncoupling, and hence complex switching operations. Freight cars can be transferred between main and branch lines, as can locos equipped with dual mode decoders. The layout was originally named Kansas by its co-creator Bob Sutherland. It is now named Sutherland after Bob who sadly passed away.

28 – A Horse to go by Steam 1/32 Scale Adrian Dyer

A scenic demonstration track made with Regency style cast iron type fish-bellied rail is used to demonstrate a unique working model of William Brunton’s 1813 locomotive with legs called a ‘mechanical traveller’ or ‘steam horse’. The test track incorporates a treadmill (equivalent to a rolling road) to better demonstrate the walking motion of the locomotive. Display boards provide historical notes including details of the first accident involving a steam locomotive. The display track features back scenes copying period etchings of the Butterley works where the locomotives were built and an early North East coal mine where one of the engines operated. A model of a typical Chaldron waggon of the period and figures in period costume to represent specific characters in the story of these locomotives provide a context to the scene.

21 – Hobbs Warren O Gauge Terry Cooke & Bernard Watson Tanks For The Memory 31A (Cambridge) M.R.C.

Hobbs Warren, a haven for rabbits, depicts the lines ( roads) beside a locomotive shed and a small wagon repair shed. The layout can be run covering five distinct periods from steam, through green diesel to the blue diesel era. The layout is DCC controlled. Tanks For The Memory - Most are aware of the glamorous express steam locomotives of the past. They were however only a small part of the railway as much of the motive power was actually tank engines. These engines covered duties such as named express trains down to yard shunting. On Hobbs Warren today 24 different classes of tank engines, that worked the old Great Eastern metals, can be seen.

22 – Motley Motive Power OO Gauge Mike Read 31A (Cambridge) M.R.C .

Motley locos are unique and there are quite a few of them! Modelling should be fun and I have enjoyed for many years adding to my Motley Junction layouts.

16 – Victoria EM Gauge Dave Tailby

Most medium to large stations used to have a couple of sidings ‘out the back’ for handling parcels traffic when such a thing existed! The layout imagines (with a slight twist to the geography of the actual location!) that these were the sidings for Victoria station in central London. They handled all parcels and sundry traffic, but not newspaper traffic which was taken directly to the train in the main platforms. You will see the pilot loco shunting parcels stock in and out of the platforms to add to other trains. Parcels trains can be seen coming in and out, along with empty van trains and the occasional passenger train diverted from another platform.

20 – Airfix Oakham OO Gauge Terry & Pauline Brooks Bury St Edmunds M.R.C.

The layout is based on the Airfix Railway System. The company began in 1939 and during the war years, the factory produced plastic components for Hawker Hurricane fighter planes. The first Airfix construction kit, a Ferguson Tractor, was produced in 1949. In 1957 Airfix started production of OO Building construction kits - examples of most of these can be seen on the layout. In 1975 they decided to enter model railway market. The locomotives, carriages and wagons on the layout are from this period. Shortly after exhibiting at toy fairs in 1981 Airfix ceased production. Most locomotives had 5 pole motors and the track was code 100 made under an agreement with Peco. As early as 1976 Airfix offered a digital multi train system using a chip in the loco allowing several locos to be run at the same time. All buildings, locomotives, carriages, wagons, people, road vehicles are original Airfix products, as is some of the track. Scenery and a backdrop has been added to enhance the layout.

15 – Beyton Bridge OO Gauge Bury St Edmunds M.R.C.

The layout represents a fictitious section of a former Great Eastern Branch Line, in Suffolk, set in the period between the end of the Second World War and Nationalisation. Beyton Bridge was originally a through station, but the line further east was truncated here in the 1920's, as the planned traffic did not materialise. The line from Bury St Edmunds thus terminates here, with both passenger and goods traffic serving the local community, business and farms. The village of Beyton Bridge is used to hide the fiddle yard, with trains emerging from under a road bridge, before crossing the river and entering the station. The station has a run-round loop and boasts a goods shed, cattle dock and coal staithe for the local coal merchant. Recently a new farming supply business has set-up at the end of the goods yard and built new “modern” premises. The railway now brings in the stock, including tractors, for this new venture. The layout is either operated by DC control with LNER stock or by DCC with early BR stock. Please feel free to ask questions about the layout or its control. The operators love to talk

11 – The Wagon Works O Gauge Colin French

This Layout is a fictional “O” Gauge minimum space shunting layout based on a Privately-Owned Wagon Repair Works somewhere in the United Kingdom. The back scene represents workshops which are served by a working wagon turntable and shunted by rope or chain and capstan to create a bit more interest. To save space, there are no turnouts on the layout. The Works has its own Shunting Locomotive, but it is assisted by a Main Line Shunting Locomotive brings wagons requiring repair, collects repaired one and bring in stores to the Works.

***************************************************************** 13 – Neely N Gauge Terry Metcalfe

This is a demountable layout built on lightweight baseboards using PECO track –code 55 on the scenic section and code 80 in the storage yard. The track plan and the train movements (not a timetable) are based on Ely in the summer of 2013 depicting the line North to Kings Lynn, Peterborough and Norwich, the line South towards Cambridge and the single-track line off towards Soham. I have also modelled some of the easily recognisable local landmarks - but not necessarily in the correct place! Hence the name – derived from nearly Ely. Presently the layout does not have the overhead catenary, but this is planned at a future date. The layout uses ready-to-run and modified stock from Farish and Dapol. It is DCC controlled using kit-built command station, booster and hand held controllers from the Model Electronic Railway Group (MERG) and utilises the MERG CBUS to control the points and coloured light signals. The control panel is a touch screen computer using the Java Model Railroad Interface (JMRI) system. This computer program allows route setting and interlocking.

We hope that you enjoy the show and will visit our exhibition again Next Year
