There is hope for marriage!

A campaign to encourage marriage, reduce divorce rates, curtail poverty,

and benefit children

“Marriage works,” says NMWUSA executive director Sheila Weber. “Research shows that marriage makes people happier,

live longer, and build more economic security. Children with married parents perform better in school. There are proven ways to repair and restore marriages—but most folks don’t

know where to go to get the help they need.”

This February 7-14, 2020, we will celebrate National Marriage Week! This annual observance is a great prompt for everyone to reflect on the gift marriage is to our Church and our country, as well as an opportunity for couples to build up their own mar-riages. This year our theme is: Stories from the Domestic Church. The readings and Gospel for this Sunday all speak in various ways of the light that the Lord brings into our lives, particularly the light of Christ crucified, and the mission to proclaim this light and to actually become the light of the world, the salt of the earth. These readings are particularly providential on this Sunday, which is being celebrated as World Marriage Day during this National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14). The word of God leads us to the heart of what it means to be the Church, and therefore also to the heart of what it means to be a Christian family: For the Church and our families to be light, we must be centered on Christ and imitate Him, going out to the peripheries to bring the Gospel. Based on the theme chosen for this year (Stories from the Domestic Church) the homily for this Sunday emphasizes the family as the domestic church. A question could be posed to all of us: Where might the word of God be leading us when it comes to our family life? Marriage and family concerns everyone: Each of us comes from a family. Each of us is a son or a daughter. In God’s plan every child is meant to be the fruit of his or her mother’s and father’s love for each other in the sacred bond of marriage. This is why conversations about marriage and the family in the public square concern all of us, and this is why the Church’s teaching on marriage and family is important for all of us. The “Domestic Church”: Very early in the life of the Church, the Christian family, founded upon the covenant of marriage be-tween husband and wife, together with any children they were blessed with, became understood as the domestic church. This un-derstanding has profound implications, because the family is the place where one learns endurance and the joy of work, fraternal love, generous - even repeated - forgiveness, and above all divine worship in prayer and the offering of one’s life.

K-8 PROGRAM: Just a reminder… There will be NO CLASSES during the Public Schools’ Winter Break.

Sunday Group: The February 16th classes will resume Feb. 23rd. Thursday Group: The February 20th Classes will resume Feb. 27th. FIRST COMMUNION PROGRAM: The First Communion of the children in our parish is an event of great joy for our whole community! We all share the joyful anticipation of the families whose children will soon begin their preparation to receive Jesus in Communion for the first time. There will be many opportunities for the parish community members to take part in special ways in the First Communion preparation. But, all of us have a mission to support the children and families in their spir-itual journey by offering them the witness of our faith and prayer. In the weeks to come we will let you know how you can welcome the children and their families and help them sense the joy of belonging to our community. All parents who have expressed an interest in taking part in the First Communion program will a end an important meeng to help them reflect on the place of the Sacrament of Communion in their own lives and in the lives of their children. Date of Meeng: Sunday, February 9, 2020 Place: Chapel Time: 9:00 AM – 10:00AM CONFIRMATION JOURNEY 2020: “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers” (Act 2:42) Our parish continues to pray for the 28 teenagers of the Confirmation Journey 2020. We ask your prayerful support for these young people of our parish community as they seek to deepen their relationship with the Lord at this most meaningful time in their lives. Reminder to all Confirmation Candidates… Individual Prayer….'During mental prayer, it is well, at times, to imagine that many insults and injuries are being heaped upon us, that misfortunes have befallen us, and then strive to train our heart to bear and forgive these things patiently, in imitation of our savior. This is the way to acquire a strong spirit.' St. Phillip Neri

As members of the Catholic Church of Newark, we are united by a common mission entrusted to us by Jesus Christ - to proclaim the Gospel, to pass on the faith to the next generation through the celebration of the sacraments, to care for the poor and vulnerable, and to form our future priests. The 2020 Annual Appeal binds us more closely to this mission through our stewardship of God's many gifts.

Your support of this year's Annual Appeal will have a direct impact on the lives of those served through the ministries and programs of this Arch-diocese.

Will you prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2020 Annual Appeal?

"To reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (Eph. 4:13)

The theme of the 2020 Annual Appeal is “Shining the Light of Christ.” As disciples, we are individually called to radiate the love of God in our work, our relationships, our service and our giving (cf. Mt. 5:16). As a Catholic faith community, our common worship, hospi-tality, pastoral care and ministry reflects this love to the wider community. By sharing our time, unique talents, and personal treasure, we participate in shining the light of Christ ever more brightly.
