PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Daves Avenue Families,

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our children. Our staff will embark upon our process to create balanced classrooms over the next few weeks. We have a specific protocol we follow in order to balance classrooms and provide a consistent learning environment for all children.

While I respect you may have perspective about teaching style, personality, classroom dynamic, much of this is based on personal experience and often reflective of one or two parents experience, and not wholly reflective of our team.

All children will flourish under the mentorship of any member of our teaching staff. Ultimately, our priorities are focused on balance, rather than student to teacher matching.

If you have a specific concern, please reach out to me directly, and I would be happy to hear your perspective.

We will begin our Smarter Balanced Assessments next week for 3rd and 5th grades with 4th grade starting their testing the following week (starting the week of 5/07). Please make sure our students get a good night's sleep, arrive to school on time, and have a balanced breakfast. This will greatly benefit their test taking efforts! Thank you.

H&SC Positions Descriptions Green Team Co-Chair - The Green Team is a group of students who take a leadership role in identifying and implementing solutions to make Daves a “greener” school. They encourage awareness in students regarding choices they make and how they may impact the environment. You will help lead the kids in this program. In addition, you will assist with planning events, projects, and/or activities that will encourage awareness in regard to Earth Day/Week.Cool Cat Auction Chair - Our annual spring fundraiser for adults only. Starting in late fall with a kick-off meeting, it will really ramp up right after the holiday break. With a solid team of volunteers (and this one usually isn’t hard to recruit for), you can make this fundraiser a huge success! This involves all aspects of a big event - marketing, auction solicitation and management, volunteer recruitment, venue procurement, food selection, decorating…Lots of time involved on this one - but a very fun event to plan! FREE2ME Co-Chair - This position promotes and works with a variety of companies and programs (including eScrip and AmazonSmile) to help raise money for Daves. This is a flexible, important position that can be done on your own time. If you want to help raise FREE money for Daves, this is the job for you.CASA Co-Chair - As a representative of CASA for the elementary school level, you will help promote healthy lifestyle choices. The big event is Red Ribbon Week in October. This includes coordinating with Student Council to get the word out at the Wednesday Wave, the newsletter, and in the classrooms. The CASA Chair should attend CASA meetings and understand the importance of making healthy, important choices.Project Cornerstone Co-Chair - Project Cornerstone is committed to helping all children and teens in Silicon Valley feel valued, respected and known. Our programs and services help individuals and communities build a web of support around young people so that they grow into healthy, caring and responsible adults. As a coordinator, you will get training, then implement and continue the asset building program at our school. There are also opportunities to be ABC readers – volunteers that work in the classroom with the kids.

Cornerstone Corner for Kindergarten

Much research in social psychology has demonstrated the power of giving and how it boosts happiness. Indeed, giving brings a sense of fulfillment and self-worth. Helping others is the best way for children to build positive character. There are many ways and places you can give and contribute. For younger kids, in addition to helping friends at school and being a helper in the house, there are also lots of family volunteering opportunities. For example, collecting children's books and donating them to a hospital, planting flowers at a local park, and taking care of abandoned dogs or cats. Try to make volunteering a regular part of your family activities, and to make it even more fun, try to do volunteering playdates, teaming up with another family and doing good together!

We are working on a "Hands of Kindness" project with the kindergartners to go with the theme. The kinders will make their own paper hand cut-outs, and write down "This is a helpful kinder hand" and what they like to do to help/contribute. We'll make a big collage of their hands to inspire more act of kindness school - wide.

For more information about Kindergarten Project Cornerstone, contact Dr. Lan Jiang.
