HMMMM....What do you
think nonrenewable resources are?
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be
regenerated or re-grown at a scale comparable to its
consumption.
Uranium- non renewable
Nuclear fusion uses uranium to create energy.
Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable
resource because once the uranium
is used, it is gone!
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GASCoal, petroleum,
and natural gas are considered
nonrenewable because they can
not be replenished in a short period of
time. These are called fossil fuels.
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS (part of petroleum) MADE ???
WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?
What is petroleum then?• a liquid mixture of
hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil
HMMMM....What are
renewable resources?
RENEWABLE RESOURCESRenewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time.
● Solar ● Geothermal● Wind ● Biomass● Hydroelectric and tidal
SOLAREnergy from the sun is used to power the movement of electrons which results in electricity.Germany: 47% of its energy is solar, next Spain (16%) and Japan (13%)
GEOTHERMAL•The earth’s core is
hot and molten. It’s energy will last for millions of years still.
• Iceland (30% of consumption of all electricity)
• Downtown Toronto skyscrapers- use coldness of lake Ontario for air conditioning
WIND Energy from the wind.
The turning blades are attached to a turbine-
a large magnet surrounded by
thousands of copper coils. The wind itself
is the result of unequal heating of different surfaces.(UK 50%, Denmark
21% of energy consumption)
BIOMASSEnergy from burning
organic or living matter.
The organic matter like corn, switchgrass,
garbage, algae…is renewed in 1 season.
Brasil (43% of cars run on biofuel)
Kenya derives about 75%, India 50%, China 33% and Brazil 25% of
their total energy from biomass
HYDROELECTRIC, TIDAL and OCEANICEnergy from the flow of water.
The sun provides the energy to evaporate the water again, reform clouds and precipitation to take place again thus renewing the water behind the dam. The sun and the moon cause tides and waves.Bay of Fundy…tidal power in CanadaInterest in wave and tidal energy systems is gathering pace as a huge number devices come to the market
SUMMARYNon-renewable resources
like coal and oil are molecular compounds made millions of years ago by living things.
A few of the renewable resources are molecular compounds like biomass
and garbage made by living things a few
months or years prior.
• Many of the non-renewable resources are used and transformed in manufacturing to produce mostly non-recyclable products like plastic, paint, adhesives, clothing, solvents…
• If NON renewable resources run out, we not only run out of fuel…we run out of almost everything manufactured!!!

• Pencil case… made of plastic…unless you choose otherwise
• Cucumbers bought at Longo’s…3 cucumbers individually wrapped in plastic and then rewrapped as a group of three… in plastic
• Choose biodegradable and recyclable where possible
• Generally all thin, flimsy plastic is NOT recyclable…like plastic bags, plastic wrappers…
Watch out…all in not what it seems• Check out the
following symbols for the 7 types of plastic
• What does it seem?
• Why do they do that?
• Ans: mislead consumers
• Look for …#1 and #2...or use glass containers
RRR• Reduce…
minimize consumption
• Reuse…choose wisely like glass containers vs plastic ziploc bags
• Recycle… do your best and encourage others
• Upcycling: Converting waste into stylish products
• Consumer power
Learn how to compost at home or use the green bin…huge difference for the environment • If it is not possible to compost
yourself consider at least separating out the organic waste from the general waste and using the local green bin…it will really help reduce methane gas emissions!
• Methane gas is worse than CO2
for greenhouse gas effect. Methane gas is produced when organic matter is not properly treated when decomposing. The green bin program takes care of properly decomposing the organic matter so that methane is not produced.
