The department ofYonne is one of the few departments in France to be able tooffer two distinguished locations. Communicating lifestylesand the sharing of experience of the Auxerrois and Chabliswine producing areas, this highly esteemed label gives aninvaluable commercial edge to the region. All the label holders can be found at www.vignobles-yonne.com

It is an event which has taken place in thedepartment of Yonne only twice before, in1975 and in 1999 and on both occasionsin Chablis. Therefore, in 2016 it is a great honour anda huge first for the wine producers and thepeople of Irancy to be able to organise andhost the 72nd Saint-Vincent Tournante deBourgogne, both in recognition of thevillage appellation and in promoting thewines of the Auxerrois region of Burgundy. If the idea came from a small handful itmust be said that generally in Irancy we like

to celebrate our wines. With local Saint-Vincent’s and anniversaries of theappellation, the organisers have alreadyserved their apprenticeship.

Around 300 volunteershave given up their time over the pastmonths to prepare for these twomemorable days.

And there's more...  On the 13th of Septem-ber 2014 a group of producers aided byvolunteers from the village picked selectedgrapes from the 170 hectares of Irancy anddelivered them to the nearby Caves de Baillywhere the current head of production, Syl-vain Martinand, offered his services to pro-duce a Crémant de Bourgogne especially forthe festival. The Cuvée Saint Vincent Cré-mant will add some welcome fizz to theweekend !

In Irancy we can be a little stubborn but always with the very bestof intentions and so we make no apologies for the following !At all of our previous events we have always held to the principlethat an appellation can only be fully appreciated by the diversityof the production of each and every wine producer present.

The Saint Vincent 2016 will be no different as we hold fast to ourbelief. 34 wine producers have joined in to present to you the‘fermented’ fruits of their labours with

These wines will beavailable over the weekend of the 30th and 31st of January 2016.

A choice of vintages covering more than a decade will help youto appreciate the full ageing potential of Irancy by tasting itthrough its evolution in the bottle. Not forgetting the chance totaste and compare the effect that each vintage has on thecharacter of each producers wine.

Indispensable and delicate, stylish andoriginal, affirmative and expressive. Justsome of the criteria that the team put incharge of the important task of selectingTHE glass for the Saint Vincent wereasked to consider. In the end theimpossible choice was made and the‘Carré de luxe’ from the Verreries deBourgogne was  selected.

For this special occasion we wanted to stay true to the spiritof Irancy and its passion for wine making. Often, this passionand determination to carry on the long tradition andpreservation of a wine with such a unique character meantenduring hardship and no more so than the wine makers ofIrancy during the first decades of the 20th century. Thedevastation caused by the phylloxera epidemic late in theprevious century and then the following outbreak of the firstworld war tested to the full the faith of the men and womenmaking wine in Irancy at that period in time.

For the Saint Vincent 2016 we pay homage to the 65 winemakers of Irancy who were producing wines in the 1930's.

In 1930, the village of Irancy could count some 65 wineproducers and ten or so shops and local tradespeople. To recreate the atmosphere and a feel for the era, a hugeamount of research was undertaken to collect togetherdocuments and photographs from that time.

At the head of this colossal task was the retired wineproducer, amateur local historian and self-styled archivistLéon Bienvenu. Aided by a small group of volunteers,Léon and his team immersed themselves in severaldecades of history.

The group not only collected documents and photos fromthe period but also enquired into the family histories andthe true characters of the people of that period, oftenaided by the reminiscences of the few remaining amongstus who can still recall life in Irancy over 80 years ago.

A last word for the age of the computer and the internetwhich helped enormously in this task.

The very first recorded mention of wineproduction in Irancy dates back to a legaldocument for the sale of a parcel ofvineyard known as Veaupessiot. In 861Charles le Chauve sold this parcel to theAbbey of Saint-Germain in Auxerre. Atthat time the monks from the surroundingabbeys at Auxerre and Vermenton playeda major role in wine production at Irancy. The wine was known for its quality andmainly used for religious ceremonies, creating great wealth for the abbeys.

Originally, the village was situated at ahigher altitude but following adevastating storm in 1223 the positionof the village changed to a more

secluded area. The village today haschanged little since that time. The housesare crowded around the village churchof Saint Germain and the tortured lanesopen out here and there onto small openplaces giving some welcome light to theinterior of the village.

For the hundreds of hikers whoclimb the steep slopes of thevineyards each year, the reward isworthwhile : Irancy offers one ofthe most stunning panoramas inBurgundy. The breath taking vistaof this natural amphitheatre ofvineyards can be enjoyed fromvarious points around the village ;from the ‘Poteau’ from ‘Palotte’ orfrom ‘Mazelots’. A veritablemosaic of shade and colour canbe enjoyed throughout the seasonswith views across the vineyards, pastures and cherry orchards all ofwhich enchant nature lovers andphotographers alike.

Irancy is like nowhere else and grapevarieties are no different. Like all redburgundy wine, Irancy is made from

. But that’s not all !The ancestral grape variety of orRomain has been grown in the vineyards ofIrancy since roman times and can be usedup to 10% in the Irancy appellation.

1932 - First recognition ofIrancy appellation under theregional label of Burgundy

1936 - Creation de l’INAO(Institut National del’Appellation d’Origine) andthe recognized status of theBurgundy Appellation

1977 - Irancy is recognised asBourgogne Irancy

1991 - Appellation is extendedinclude the vineyards in thecommunes of Vincellottes andCravant

1998 – Irancy gains villageappellation of ‘AppellationIrancy Contrôlée’

THE IRANCY APPELATION

During the 1960’s a group ofarchaeologists discovered an importantGallo-roman site at the foot of the Irancyhillside, just across the river Yonne and theNivernais Canal in the village of Escolives-Sainte-Camille. Amongst the motifs thatdecorated these thermal baths one canclearly recognise the distinctive leaf of theCésar grape, proving that the variety wasalready being cultivated in the Auxerroisregion as far back as the 2nd Century AD.

The northerly situation of Irancy mightmake one doubt its capability inproducing a red Burgundy wine that livesup to its name.

These privileged conditions allow thegrapes to attain good sugar levels whilstmaintaining the tannins necessary to givethe wine its character, dynamism andfreshness. The result is a wine that needs 3 to 4years before reaching maturity and it isonly between 4 and 10 years that Irancywine reaches its fullest potential. Forsome vintages, 10 years is by no means

the limit of an Irancy wine to carry on itsevolution in the bottle.

, but one must notleave out the production of rosé wine andCrémant de Bourgogne.Rosé wine production, whilst small, istraditional in Irancy and can be found inmost cellars as a welcome introductionto tasting.Crémant de Bourgogne has beenproduced for over 40 years from PinotNoir found on the slopes which mostresemble the conditions found in thechampagne region.
