KNPLCB’s “Home for the Holidays” Christmas tree won Best of Festival for the 2nd year in a row at the Festival of Trees, held at the Quality Inn & Suites.
The tree was also voted “Best Home-made”. The event, which benefits
the Miss Nebraska Scholar-ship fund & Children’s Mir-acle Network, attracts thousands of people every year. Every orna-ment, tree skirt and accompanying decoration
is made entirely out of materials many would consider trash. This year the theme revolved around local baseball and softball teams. The best part is that it cost under $20 to make! The event gives KNPLCB an opportunity to share a great environmen-tal message to a large group of people. Repur-posing items and reusing items can look amazing, cost almost nothing at all and saves items from going to the landfill.

Yuletide Yards was a huge success again this year! Over 60 yards were
nominated for their beautifully decorated homes this holiday season.
KELN Radio, North Platte Post and KNPLCB want to congratulate all
who participated, from those who nominated yards to those who deco-
rated and judged. We appreciate the extra mile our winners and nomi-
nees take each year and the care they put into keeping their homes
beautiful all year long.

KNPLCB Board Member, Judy Pederson, and KNPLCB Pro-gram Director, Holly Carlini, delivered $600 worth of educa-tional material to Adams Middle School. The funds were pro-vided by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality’s Read Great Litter-ature grants. Every year this allows KNPLCB to provide environmental books and materials to ar-ea schools and libraries. This year we worked with Adams Mid-dle School Principal Vikki Carlson and 7th and 8th Grade Sci-ence Teachers to find solar energy sets and renewable energy kits. These materials will allow students to focus on green tech-nologies while developing their environmental awareness.

Going Green… KNPLCB donated Solo Company's Bare products
to the Episcopal Church for their free community dinner held every Wednes-
day in North Platte. The eco-forward tableware is made with
alternative resources, like sugarcane,
which are renewable and compostable.
Keep America
Beautiful’s
Innovation Award!
KNPLCB will receive Keep America Beau-
tiful’ s Innovation Award during the Na-
tional Conference held in Orland, Florida,
in February. KNPLCB received national recognition for their
bottle cap murals in three Lincoln County Schools. The
murals teach students about how much trash we generate, how to reuse
and recycle & ways of protecting the environment. Each bottle cap
mural uses about 1,500-3,000 bottle caps. The murals are designed,
painted & embellished with caps by KNPLCB staff & students. A 12- foot
x 8-foot mural sits in the entryway at Lincoln Ele-
mentary. A 4- foot x 8- foot eagle mural graces the
walls at Eisenhower School. A 4-foot x 8-foot cross
is currently in the works at McDaid Elementary.
Repurposed Art
Birdfeeders McDonald 4th Graders made environ-
mentally friendly birdfeeders with
KNPLCB this winter. The city of NP do-
nated a cookie and hot chocolate for
each student who brought their bird-
feeders to Cody Park. This teaches
students how to care
for wildlife, the envi-
ronment and repur-
pose items!
5th Graders at McDonald
School learn how to repurpose
old vinyl records that were
salvaged from the trash/
landfill. KNPLCB Programs
Director, Holly Carlini taught
the class how to paint a Mandala
design. Mandala means circle,
so it’s a great way to incorpo-
rate the earth and the environ-
ment. This lesson focused on
balance in art and balance in the
earth. Creative kids caring
about the environment!
