HEALED

When John develops cancer, his wife, Jane, was determined to care for him at home. Their adult children drove John for treatments while a team of friends, neighbors, and parishioners made meals, ran errands, and did chores.

Within weeks John lost ground; the cancer had spread. The treatments were painful and exhausting, so John and Jane refused further procedures and turned to hospice help. John, a once lively and intelligent man, became silent and troubled. One friend, Elizabeth, decided to pray for Christ’s healing in whatever way John needed it most.

A few days after, before anointing and Communion, John confessed to his pastor that he had cut off communication with his brother after a quarrel forty years before, and had never spoken of him since. John wanted to make peace. John’s son traced his long-lost relative through the Internet. They had a whole precious day together, and that night John died, calm and healed of heart.

The Eucharist (Quasimodo)

At the Last Supper, Jesus established the Eucharist as a rite by which we remember him and he continues to be with us. Eucharist is derived from the Greek word meaning to give thanks. Jesus established his own commemoration by giving thanks to the Father. From the beginning of the church, the Christian community has celebrated the Eucharist in different ways, but always with the same elements: bread and wine, which become the Body and Blood of Our Lord. During the early centuries all the Christians received Communion by taking the bread into their own hands, but over time many stopped receiving Communion because they felt they were not worthy. For that reason, in 1563 the Council of Trent decreed that all Catholics should receive Communion at least once a year, preferably during the Easter season, from the Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost. In past centuries, priests in Chile took the Eucharist to all those who could not attend Mass during the Easter Vigil. They began on the second Sunday of Easter, and accompanied by cowboys who protected them from bandits, they took the Blessed Sacrament in silver vessels throughout the region. This practice became known as Quasimodo, based on the beginning phrase of the Introit of the Mass for the Second Sunday of Easter: Quasi modo geniti enfantes (Like newborn babes). Today the feast is also known as “running Christ” (correr a Cristo) because Christ in the Blessed Sacrament is carried in decorated carts through the streets of the towns of Chile while the children run in front of the carts shouting, “Long live Christ the King!” In this manner the children announce the coming of Christ, something that all Christians should do by deeds and words every day of the year. CURADO

Reflecting on God’s Word He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

If you’ve ever pondered what heaven might be like, you may have thought of a summer day: the bloom of the flowers, the warmth of the sun, God’s creation bursting with life. Who would ever want to leave such a beautiful place? And yet this is what Jesus did when he left heaven to come and save us.

St. Paul explains why Jesus made such a sacrifice: “So that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Jesus took on the “poverty” of our human limitations so that we could inherit the richness of eternal life. He entered so fully into our poverty, in fact, that he endured death—all so that we could live forever.

Now, because of Jesus’ sacrifice, you can receive his riches every single day. But how? Today’s Gospel shows us the way. Both Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman knew they were in desperate circumstances and that they needed the healing that only Jesus could provide. Similarly, when we acknowledge our spiritual poverty, we open our hearts to receive Jesus’ riches. So confess your weaknesses and your sins to the Lord. Acknowledge the temptations that always seem to trip you up. Tell Jesus that you need him.

Yet Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman didn’t just admit their poverty. They also believed in the riches of Jesus’ love. Their faith opened a way for his divine power to flow. Likewise, when you confess your neediness to the Lord, you can be confident that he will fill you—not with material wealth, but with the riches of his presence, his forgiveness, and his wisdom.

Jesus’ poverty has won you untold riches—riches that are available to you in a special way in Holy Communion. So come to him in poverty and humility and faith. Come and let him fill you. - From the Word among us-June-2021
