I am pleased to say we did our bit for the environment in switching off our lights for Earth Hour on Saturday night.Apparently going by the television media reports about 25 per cent of people polled participated in what is basically a passive protest. This must be the easiest possible thing you could do to send a message – spend one hour sitting in the dark – well not so dark if you are a candle addict like I am.I have plenty of candles in the house, however I don’t normally have them all lit at once, and I now know why – my recent conversion to scented candles. The sweet smell of vanilla is relaxing but maybe not so much next to the engaging waft of a heavenly tangerine scent, right beside a lovely cinnamon and honey scent. Good thing I held off with the gorgeous green citrus springtime candle I
recently received as a gift.I also have a great collection of lovely glass candle holders – well as of Saturday night – I have one less, with one of our guests doing some sort of gymnastics manoeuvre when sitting on the lounge knocking it off the coffee table, smashing it to a million pieces, and sending melted wax across the polished timber floors.Next year I think I will just stick to the box of blackout candles we keep under the kitchen sink stuck onto old saucers. And if anyone has an easy tip for removing wax from the timber floor without scratching the surface then please let me know!
Helen Wilkinson of the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is getting ready for this weekend's massive ‘Swapfest’ to be held between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. If you love the idea of recycling your clothes and accessories then you won’t want to miss this event.

Sending strength to Jess contributed by Melissa Newton
There’s a special little girl in our community that needs our support more than ever. So many of us have been touched by the amazing journey of nine-year-old Jessica Wall who underwent a much needed kidney transplant last year.
Following a transplant, multiple medications are required to ensure a successful outcome. Jess contracted a virus that effected the absorption of her med’s resulting in her becoming quite ill and she is now fighting her biggest battle so far. When her parents Kelly and Clayt asked for us all to pray and send positive thoughts for their little girl, they never expected such an overwhelming response. Kelly’s facebook page has been inundated with beautiful messages and even a prayer chain has been started in the South East and continues to travel far and wide including Holland!! It’s so touching to see a whole community of people showing their support in so many ways. Last Tuesday a sea of pink and purple hearts were displayed on children’s arms with the words ‘i love you Jess’ in them. This was declared ‘Jess Wall Recognition Day’. It’s been an emotional and exhausting past few weeks for the Wall family. Kelly said that it is this outpouring of heartfelt well wishes from friends, family and even strangers that give them the strength to continue the days ahead. When Kelly read out some of these beautiful messages to Jess,
she squeezed her mum’s hand. Kelly, Clayt and brother Josh would also like to give thanks to the staff at ‘Seven South’ in the Mater Children’s Hospital for providing such personal care to their beautiful Jess. So please keep that wonderful community spirit coming and let’s get Jess back home riding her horse again soon.A 'Family Fun Day' Fundraiser is planned for Sunday, April 10 at the Beerwah Sports Grounds – details of the event will be published in the next edition of Glasshouse Country News. Anyone interested on helping out can call Shelly on 0447 447 346 or if you would like to make a donation this can be done at the Commonwealth Bank at Beerwah.

Honey, I shrunk the studentsAt the recent Beerwah State High School Literacy and Numeracy evening, students and parents could have been forgiven for thinking they were part of a ‘Honey, I shrunk the kids’ movie set as they came face to face with a giant laptop.Beerwah State High School Chaplain, Mike Turner, said students from Years 8, 9 and 10, staff and volunteers took a week to build the laptop which is exactly 9.135 times the size of a real one. It is over 3 metres wide and 2.5 metres high and people were able to walk onto the keyboard and through the screen. While creating the giant laptop was a fun project the reason it was created is a serious one.“The reason we built this was to find a unique way to grab the attention of kids and mums and dads on the issue of bullying and abuse via the internet. We are keen to get mums and dads attention about supervising their kids’ use of the home computer,” said Mike.“As you know there a lot of good things on the internet and a lot of bad things on the internet; some of the negatives that we see have come from the social networking stuff. We’re very passionate about encouraging parents to supervise. Instead of having laptops or computers locked away in kids rooms, having them in the main living area would be a really great start,” he said.Mike added that as with any other teenage issue it’s all about communication.“If mums and dads can really work at getting conversations with their kids about what they’re looking at, what they’re doing, not in the sense of
being nosey, just talking about it and keeping the lines of communication open.”Mike said if someone is getting cyberbullied the response depends on the situation.“In some situations the school will deal with it and is able to, at other times people can go straight to the police.”Beerwah High’s Literacy and Numeracy Evening, which was filled with games, challenges, puzzles, prizes and more, was a big success; with the giant laptop definitely being an attention grabber. Even though the night is over the laptop will continue to be used as a teaching tool, said Mike.“We already do cyberbully sessions with all the Grade 8’s looking at being cybersafe. So we’ll be looking at setting it up and using it as a talking point.”

Queensland, members of the Beerwah RSL Citizens Club Committee and Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch members.Throughout the meeting, long discussions were held which included a compromise from both parties to allow the club to continue to operate and deliver ongoing services to members, the veteran community and staff. An agreement was drafted to move forward with both parties happy with the decision. However the Club Committee later withdrew their support.Mr McHugh said this was a bitter blow for the local community.“The result of the Club Committees’ refusal to come to the party has meant the club will have to vacate the premises by April 12,” he said.“This will hurt the members of the club, current staff and be a detriment to those in the Beerwah community.RSL (Queensland Branch) has made a commitment to work with the RSL Sub Branch and members of the community to ensure the benefits of the Club will not be trampled by the actions of the Club Committee.Mr McHugh said that substantial concessions had been made by the RSL Sub Branch, within negotiations, but it seemed egos were
RSL (Queensland Branch) CEO, Chris McHugh CSC says he is bitterly disappointed with the attitude of the Beerwah RSL Citizens Club Committee following a last minute bid to save the club for the community. The future of the Beerwah RSL Club has been under threat for some time due to a dispute between the Beerwah RSL Citizens Club Committee, who operate the club, and the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch, who own the club building and lease it to the Club Committee. The two organisations are completely separate entities, with the Club Committee a commercial entity operating under the RSL name. The Sub Branch is made up of Returned & Services League of Australia members.Despite the best efforts of the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch to reach an agreement with the Club at a meeting on Monday, March 21, it was thwarted by a last minute withdrawal from the Club which has forced the closure. The meeting was attended by RSL (Queensland Branch) CEO Chris McHugh CSC, Penny Wilson from The RSL & Services Clubs Association
Beerwah Club closure disappoints RSL what was stopping this service being delivered to the community.“Their self-interest has stopped progress and altered any chance of benefits to be continued to be delivered to the community,” he said.
Open an account and winIf you go into the Bank of Queensland Beerwah before April 30 and open their new ‘Day2Day Plus’ account you will be given an entry to go in to the draw to win a Queensland State of Origin League ball signed by Mal Meninga. It’s raining clothesIf you’ve been meaning to sort through your clothes wardrobes, cupboards and drawers to work what items you don’t wear anymore, now is the time to do it! Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood centre is hosting a Swap Fest on Saturday, April 2, from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Just bring along clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer wear and swap them for anything that takes your fancy. You can take away as many items as you bring.Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre volunteer, Helen Wilkinson said, “we thought it’s a great, really affordable, sustainable way to bring people together, have some fun and revamp your wardrobe. You really can update your wardrobe with interesting stuff. Pre-loved things come with character too.”Helen has been to a few clothes swaps in the past.“Personally, it’s a fun way to find clothes that you might not ordinarily buy for yourself. I’ve been to clothes swaps where I’ve pretty much got a whole new winter wardrobe from one clothes swap. It’s a nice social thing too, a bit different from walking into a shop.”Everybody is welcome to come along. Clothes can be for women, men or children, just make sure all items are in wearable condition. Any clothes left

Cultural exchange visit
Excitement is mounting as Glasshouse Country Uniting Church members prepare for an exciting two week cultural exchange with 23 people from the United Church in Gabagaba Papua New Guinea, 70 kms from Port Moresby. Some of their houses are built over the water as shown in the picture. The Gabagaba people are keen to see how we do things in Australia and will be visiting HACC and Eden in Beerwah to see how we care for our elders; the Uniting Church Playgroup, Youth Group, Church Council, Craft Group and Adult Fellowship. During their stay they will be performing perovetas (Prophet songs) at the Sunday Services as they love to harmonise; as well as performing some cultural dancing. We are grateful to Paia and John Ingram of Peachester (who are organising the event) for the opportunity to have people of a very different culture in our homes and learn of their ways as well as showing them our beautiful Glasshouse Country area. Please phone John on 5494 9380 or 0410 572 355 if you can supply any palm leaves from coconut palms which are required for basket making demonstrations.

New Principal for Glass House Mountains State SchoolGlass House Mountains State School has welcomed a new Principal through its lovely gates. Principal Elizabeth Somers relocated from Charleville after four years of rural remote service and commenced at Glass House Mountains at the beginning of the year.Principal Somers said coming to a new school was always exciting.“There is an education improvement agenda nationally and globally because our youth and our children are our social capital and our leaders of the future. So we’re looking very carefully at what we’re doing and how children are learning to make sure they maximise learning,” she said.Principal Somers became a teacher in 1979, and her wide range of experience includes Special Education, Head of Curriculum and teaching early to upper grades. Her first Acting Principal role was in 2006 and she has also previously been Principal at Kenilworth State School and Noosaville State School.
Principal Somers said the biggest challenge when starting at a new school is getting to know everybody as quickly as you can.“It’s a great school, really well cared for and valued by the community. The community and the school community have been very welcoming. I’m really fortunate to have wonderful staff, it’s great to work with a team of wonderful professionals,” she said.
But it’s not all work for the new Principal. “I’m enjoying being back on the Sunshine Coast and reconnecting with family and friends,” she said.

Indigenous Education Committee at Beerwah State SchoolBeerwah State School is in the process of embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives within the school. A supportive environment is essential for students, parents, community members and staff. As a result, a working group involving parents of Indigenous students and staff members will meet regularly to ensure excellent communication, flexible programs and appropriate resources are developed. This group will form the Indigenous Education Committee and will drive how Beerwah State School celebrates Indigenous culture as well as providing students with access to a balanced educational curriculum.

The looming 100 hoursYou can see them coming kilometres away. Little yellow squares shining on the back and front. Usually a parent gripping the edge of their seats and trying to appear calm is visible to passers-by. It’s a learner driver. Most 15-year-olds count down the days until their 16th birthday. I myself was one of them last year. No, not because it’s the day we refuse to do assignment work. Because it’s the day we edge one step closer to freedom - by obtaining a learner drivers licence. This momentous occasion prompts a series of not so riveting questions. Some of these are: how am I going to rack up those dreaded, looming 100 hours? What if I cause road rage? And my own personal fear; what if I accidentally run into my Dad’s new boat when reversing out of the driveway? The road can most definitely be a scary place, but driving can also be a whole lot of fun too (without racing others at traffic lights.) Confidence and persistence always seem to be the key, so keep putting along and those 100 hours will have flown by before you know it. At least, that’s what I’m hoping!

Disaster theme inspires poetryRecently students at Landsborough State School Year 6/7 B were asked to write a poem about the recent devastating floods.Following are two of the insightful compositions. My Disaster PoemIf our people die we stand high and wise,And we’ll stand with watery eyes,Because we share this land,We’ll lend you a hand,We’ll fight disasters whenever they come,We’ll fight back until we go numb,Stay strong don’t worry, we’re here and we’re sorry.By Thomas WoulfeWe are sorry for what happened when the rain came out to play,We knew it was no pleasure to see treasures wash away,We are beside you all the way because you belong,Don’t give up don’t break down we will work hard and long,For the ones that were lost are forever in our hearts,The rain fell fast the rivers ran like darts,Keep up the Queensland spirit.By Sarah Doneman

The Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc must close its doors on April 9, following an eviction order served by the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch on Friday 11th February, 2011. Although a lease is in place until 2021, the Sub Branch has ordered the Club to leave. The Club is not in breach of its lease and the Sub Branch has given no formal reason for this order, but claims it will open its own competing business on the site shortly after the Club leaves.
The Club does not wish to leave, and has worked hard to negotiate an acceptable outcome so we can continue operating and providing valuable services to the Beerwah community. All serious efforts to reach a solution have been rejected by the Sub Branch and now RSL Queensland.
The Club has 3500 members, and generates over $1m annually in employment and economic activity for the Beerwah community. 30 people will lose their jobs because of the Sub Branch’s decision, and many local businesses will suffer. The staff have continued to work hard in the face of a campaign of threats and bullying..
RSL Queensland and the RSL Sub Branch have made a number of misleading comments about their decision to evict the club. Here are the facts:
FACT: The Sub Branch has evicted the Club without reason, and many of the Sub Branch members disagree with the decision.
FACT: Despite promising to mediate in the dispute, RSL Queensland has refused to intervene to stop its Sub Branch closing this community club.
FACT: Theassets, fittingsandfixturesoftheclubbelongtothemembersandthepeopleof Beerwah, not a small group of people who want to seize control of them.
FACT: Your assets will remain in the community, relocated to the Club’s own premises – the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club.
FACT: The only “solution” proposed by RSL Queensland was a complete takeover, involving a raid on the assets of the community and citizens of Beerwah.
FACT: The claim that the Club ever agreed to a takeover by the Sub Branch is completely false.
FACT: The closure of the club will strip the Sub Branch of $240,000 in rent each year. Setting up a new club will not happen overnight, and will waste hundreds of thousands of dollars.
FACT: The club belongs to the people of Beerwah, not a few faceless individuals who want to control it for their own purposes.
FACT: Your Club Committee was duly elected by its members at the Annual General Meeting
FACT: Your Club will continue to support the local community with Sponsorships and donations.
You can make a difference. Tell RSL Queensland and the Sub Branch to get their hands off your club. Tell them it belongs to the people of Beerwah. Tell them not to shut it down!

Unique driver training
Julie Gould, owner of Beerwah U-Bute Driver Training
Owner of Beerwah U-Bute Driver Training, Julie Gould, teaches people of all ages how to drive a manual vehicle, with a difference - a Holden VE Commodore Ute. As a QLD qualified Driving Instructor, with a Blue Card and a fully insured (dual controls, dual fuel - LPG and petrol - 6 cylinder / 6 speed manual) vehicle, Julie is proud of her business with a difference. As a result, the student can learn how to switch from LPG to petrol, learn how to pull and reverse a trailer (optional) and with the unique ‘parking stands’, can practise parallel parking without the fear of causing damage to any vehicle nearby or the Driver Training vehicle.
“I am offering GCNews readers the opportunity to learn to drive a vehicle that is ‘Unique’,” Julie explains.
“It’s the only one of its kind on offer in the choice of Driver Training vehicles available on the Sunshine Coast, at this time. Lessons run approximately one hour and 30 minutes, after which a digital photo is taken of the student with the Holden VE Ute, which I forward to them by e-mail,” she said.
While Beerwah U-Bute Driver Training has only been operating since February 8, Julie says students are giving tremendous feedback. She says the greatest highlight in her business is seeing the Learner Driver pass their official driving test to obtain their probationary licence.Beerwah U Bute Driver Training also gives the option, with some conditions and a small hire fee, for students to use the vehicle to undertake their driving tests. For a unique learner driver experience, phone Julie on 0438 643 403 anytime and arrange for her to meet you at your home, office or school. Beerwah U-Bute Driver Training, P.O. Box 377 Beerwah, Qld 4519.
From strength to strength
The Strength in Business networking group was formed in June 2010. Its aim was to promote rapid growth in local small to medium businesses, as well as to provide a sounding board whereby local business owners could benefit from the skills and knowledge of fellow professionals from varying backgrounds. Now, just nine months later, the group is progressing with astonishing momentum, with meeting attendance in 2011 more than doubling last year’s already growing numbers. “I started the association to fulfil a personal need to grow my own business through networking,” says group founder, Ben Foster.“As it turned out, this need was felt throughout the entire local business community, from

This means every cent the group makes is being spent on strengthening the bonds between local businesses, and thereby promoting growth in the local business community.”Like many other members of the association, Ben is also heavily involved with the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce and believes that both groups play essential roles in building local business.“The Chamber of Commerce is vital in forming a voice for the region’s businesses – a voice which can be taken with positive effect to Council and beyond.“Strength in Business Inc is instead focused entirely on business growth – on making sure that local businesses have the size and strength to complement the movements of the Chamber and other like-minded organisations,” Ben explains. For more information on Strength in Business Inc and how the group can help grow your business, email Ben at [email protected]

This is the program which is strongly supported by the Glasshouse Country View Club.Additional to the many great schemes to support these children Sarah explained that the Smith Family are also donating $300.00 to each of their supported children who were affected by the recent floods. This meeting will include lunch and our speaker will be Roger Landbeck from the Maleny Light Horse Troop.
GMAN Contributed by Cliff Schnick, PresidentFollowing discussions with and approval by the Sunshine Coast Council, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) is planning a community involvement mass tree planting event ‘Plant 1000 Trees’, as part of the Glass House Country Festival. This will take place in the Page Street Bushland Reserve, Glass House Mountains on Sunday, June 5. A team of GMAN members door knocked residents in the immediate Page Street area on Saturday, March 19 to alert them to this event and invite them to participate. The team was pleased with the response they received and will be following up with further information to the wider community in the period leading up to the June event. We would like to see the Glass House Mountains community get behind this initiative to further enhance another part of our town. Anyone wishing to find out more is invited to call Yvonne on 5438 7118.

Ref. Ann Ross’s decision to stand for CouncilI would like to congratulate Ann Ross for her decision to stand for Division 1 in the Sunshine Coast Council. Since Councillor Anna has announced her decision to retire, this gives potential candidates an opportunity to make themselves known to the community at large in time for the elections, still 12 months away.Ann is already well known to many people for her work as a former Rotarian and a member of the Beerwah Ambulance Committee. Her volunteer work as a ‘Friend of Bankfoot House’, publication of a booklet on the Beerburrum Memorial Trees, and the historical signage in Beerburrum township has bought her acclaim in both local and wider circles.Ann is young and energetic, both qualities needed to adequately represent such a large division and cope with the requirements of the community work involved.I wish her well in such a demanding campaign.

Thanks to everyoneHaving been the Co-ordintaor at BADYACC for the last 13 years I have now moved on to manage another program for our organisation (IFYS) which is based in Maroochydore.I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to my amazing journey at BADYACC, those who supported me as coordinator of the Centre, supported the programs and service delivery over the years, and those who have given their time in helping develop the Centre into what it is now. The partnerships with other services and the strong networks that are in place have been a significant factor in being able to deliver so many programs over the past years.Robyn Stockton has replaced me in my role with the support of Gail, and I know the Centre will be in great hands, with some exciting new things happening in the future. To personally thank everyone would take up many pages, so please accept this letter as my thanks to you all.Again thank you, it has been a pleasure to work within the Beerwah community, and I intend to stay connected through family and friends.

Get involved before complainingThe dispute at the Beerwah RSL Club has now raised the interest of a few and I would just like to point out that the Club Committee have in the last nine months asked the members twice to come to a meeting to vote on a new constitution and listen to the debate on this matter. If you didn’t bother to come and support your club and get the information then do not attack this club committee who have tried to get you involved.Too often ill informed people decide at the last minute to get involved - without the facts. If you had bothered you would have worked out like the rest of us that the Sub Branch has worked against the Club all along and have always intended to take over the Club and the community asset. This is a community club and I applaud this committee for protecting our asset, Community money built this club and the community reserve the right to continue to share ownership.Glasshouse Bowls Club is the oldest club in this area and is an icon to those who have lived here for years.Handing over the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Club would also mean handing over the Glasshouse Bowls Club which amalgamated with the Citizens Club nine years ago with the promise from the Club Committee that this Club would always remain a community Club owned by the community.Thank you to the present Club Committee who have ethics and have honored this promise and protected this asset for the community.I am extremely upset and hurt that the Sub Branch decided to evict and close the Beerwah RSL Club but I and many people I know will never step foot inside that building again if another club opens in its place.Come and join the Glasshouse Bowls Club and get back to what this community used to be about. You want to know what is going on in future, then get involved because if you had, you may of helped save this great club enjoyed by a lot and destroyed by a few. To the wonderful men and women who built this Club you will be remembered.Lest we forget.

Strictest Privacy? On March 24, I contacted the Sunshine Coast Council Caloundra Office to report a council vehicle parked in a disabled car park.I told the lady that answered the phone details of the vehicle and registration number. She said that she would track down the relevant department and inform the relevant supervisor. She asked me for my phone number and assured me that this would be kept in the strictest privacy. At about 8.15am on Friday, March 25, I received a phone call from the driver of the vehicle. He apologised to me and seemed very genuine.I was not looking for an apology from the driver as I am not disabled so he should not have been apologising to me. I contacted Anna Grosskreutz’s office and spoke to her secretary and the Council Office at Caloundra. Both people that I spoke to at these offices seem to have missed the point. My personal details should not have been given out to the driver or anyone else. So beware when giving your personal details to the Council as you don't know who they may be given to.

Macca’s not concern for panicI don't think there is any need to panic about the arrival of Macca's.The hinterland population is set to continue expanding, and we need more local businesses to meet the demands of people of all ages. Little kids love going to Macca's, and it's not hard as a parent to control how often your child goes there to eat. Big kids can meet socially at Macca's, as there's not much else for them to do in the local area, plus teenagers can gain work experience that's a little different to working on the checkouts at Beerwah Woolies.People with limited incomes can afford to give their kids a treat there once in a while, or just have a cheap breakfast out and a free read of the daily papers. The existing cafe's in Landsborough cater to other demographics and I have no doubt their customers will stay loyal. It's simply a matter of having more choices available locally, rather than having to drive all the way to the coast for a treat. The big panic about Woolies setting up shop in Maleny never resulted in a decline in the town's trade or impacted on its special character, despite its high profile location at the front of the township. The Macca's properties are always well maintained and the golden arches are a familiar sight all over the country. Personally I think they are far less offensive to the eye than the ridiculous forest of No Standing signs that suddenly sprang up overnight outside Australia Zoo last year.

Anzac Day Care PackagesI encourage local residents to consider preparing and sending Anzac Day Care Packages to our troops in the Middle East, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. These are delivered free of charge by Australia Post if under 2kg in weight and packaged in ‘BM’ size box available from post offices for around $2.00. Customs forms will need to be filled out when the packages are delivered to Australia Post. Pumicestone PassageI tabled in the Australian Parliament (on Thursday, February 24) a petition from the Take Action for Pumicestone Passage (TAPP) community group, which calls for a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Pumicestone Passage and catchments prior to work beginning on the Caloundra South project. The organisation, which noted that 98 per cent of the collected 13,681 signatures are from the Caloundra area, collected the signatures since New Year’s Day. I have also written to Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities Tony Burke for a meeting to discuss the matter.
I recently had a tour of Bells Creek - we were on the creek at about midday. It was slightly overcast but the creek was as still as you would expect of a pane of glass, yet underneath you could sense the thriving activity of fish, prawns and even crabs. The creek at times is quite wide, other times very narrow, but at all times surrounded by bush, mangroves and teeming life. One couldn’t help but be impressed by the solitude and peace interrupted only by a couple of kayakers who were fishing and two loud jet skis pushing their wake onto the bank. You could almost imagine yourself being alone in the world and when the dinghy stopped the overwhelming sound was one of silence. We pulled onto the bank a couple of times, the first time we spotted the rear of Pelican Waters, probably two to three kilometres away, and the second saw houses being built 100 metres from the bank.On one occasion we came across a vast expanse of land that looked as though it had been cleared, for 400 metres away was but no such growth existed between where we stood, 30 metres from the bank and the commencement of the woodland.Later we turned with the river and suddenly in front of us you saw, in the distance, the top of the hotel complex at Pelican Waters. Everywhere you went you saw birdlife and you could hear the fish darting out of the way as the boat came towards them.I was only able to be on the creek for a short time, but in that time I gained a better understanding than any written word could provide, as to the beauty and wonder of nature at its most perfect. This area has been largely undisturbed, for tens of thousands of years and it is a matter of an obligation to ensure it is maintained, and a moral position that we must adopt to retain such beauty.

Visions Australia shows a vision for QueenslandWith more than 64,000 Queenslanders who are blind or have low vision, and the number growing steadily as the population ages, Vision Australia’s Queensland Regional Manager, Ms Karen Knight, says now is the time for the government to invest. The sunshine state’s leading provider of services to people who are blind or have low vision has released its 2011-12 Budget priorities to deliver more services to Queenslanders where they are most needed.“Vision Australia is urging the Queensland Government to get behind proven initiatives that will assist the growing number of Queenslanders who are vision impaired when it hands down its Budget on June 14,” Ms Knight said.“Our priorities this year include helping children and their families as well as seniors by expanding the number of specialists who
provide proven low cost services and support,” Ms Knight said.“We want to assist children who are blind to develop living skills, get through school, and ultimately find jobs. Independent research shows that for each dollar invested more than $12.40 is returned to the community as children grow into independent adults with the skills and confidence to achieve anything they set their hearts on.For more information or to support Vision Australia call 1300 84 74 66 or visit www.visionaustralia.org

Be seen in greenResidents, staff and volunteers of Embracia (Eden) in Glasshouse Country had a fantastic day celebrating St Patrick’s Day. There was a sea of green as the motto of the day was ‘Be Green to Be Seen’ and there were prize giveaways with everyone in green receiving a free ticket in the prize draw. Activities on the day included a sing-along with Fred and Joyce Carr as well as tempting Irish treats to enjoy. The Friends of Eden Irish raffle was won by B Hill, one of our residents relatives. It was a great day of fun which we will remember for some time to come.
Precinct venue were both viewers and subjects of Helga’s photographic talent from GCNews readership taken by Tania Oldfield of G3 photography. Helga’s book is available online at http://www.twinsofaustralia.com.au/book-shop and a portion of each book sold will be donated to the Sunshine Coast Multiple Birth Association. Beerwah State High School Senior School CaptainsPeachester State School
Asha Josland: “Being School Captain is a great privilege. It’s a big responsibility, but it’s exciting. A Captain needs to be confident, to be able to address large groups, and to be organised and punctual. I always follow the rules and I believe in role modelling all our rules because actions speak louder than words do. I enjoy public speaking as well so I think that comes in handy.”
Tyler Bosch: “It’s an honour to be Captain and it’s an opportunity to give back to the school. A Captain should participate in everything they can, lead by example, and make friends easily. They should make people feel comfortable around them, and be able to motivate people as well. That comes with trying to earn people’s respect, not demanding respect. I’m not derogatory or judgemental.”
Emily Oliver: “It’s a great opportunity for me to learn and to interact with more people. Part of the opportunity is to learn leadership and organisation - which is a little rusty at the moment - and role modelling. A Captain should show responsibility, organisation, leadership and confidence. I feel that I’m confident, I’m not afraid of speaking to new people and I’m not afraid of public speaking either.”
Jake Chalmers: “It’s really great to be a School Captain, it’s opened up a lot of opportunities and it’s a real honour to be part of the school this much. A School Captain should have a lot of confidence, be able to speak publicly and participate in everything that the school organises such as speech nights. I’m looking forward to the opportunities inside and outside of school.”
Beerwah State High School Middle School Captains
Introducing our School Captains 2011seriesIt’s that time of year when we introduce you to our School Captains for 2011 and share their thoughts about what being a School Captain means to them.
Jordan Bull, Primary School Captain: “When I got Captain I was very happy and it’s been pretty fun so far. A School Captain needs to have a lot of qualities to be the best they can be: good communication skills, be a good role model to students younger than them. I think I’m a good listener to teachers, I do my work, try not to give up and I like helping kids out."
Mooloolah State School
Holly Colvin said: “Being Captain is a really good opportunity and it’s really fun so far. I’ll be glad to help out with the community. A Captain needs initiative, responsibility, to be organised, and able to solve problems. I think I’m friendly, responsible and very organised. I’m looking forward to a lot of fundraising and I’d like to help out with it, as well as helping the students and getting to know one another.”
Ruby Lewis said: “A Captain needs to be polite, to always be ready for whatever will happen next and be good at making speeches. My mum says I have good manners, and that people can trust me. I try to always do the right thing. As Captains every Monday morning we go up on parade and do a speech or we invite visitors into the school and show them where everything is.”
Kirrilly Spratt said: “I’m really excited and happy to be able to help other kids in the school, and being able to do extra jobs to help other people in the community and teachers. A Captain needs confidence for speaking, to be able to work with others and also to be organised. I’m responsible and respectful to my peers and my teachers. I’m looking forward to helping raise more money for the school.”
Robert Sanders said: “My mum always thought I was really responsible and thought I would get it, and I’m really proud that I did. Being a Captain means to be responsible and not get in much trouble all the time, and to help other kids out if they’re having trouble. I reckon I’m responsible, I can be trusted, my friends think I can set a good example, and I’m respectful to other people.”
Glasshouse Country Christian College
Josh Davis, Senior School Captain: “I’ve been here since the school started; I was one of the founding students, so it really means a lot to me to be able to do this. I’m a good role model because I’m a Christian, I’ve had numerous leadership roles before, I’m hardworking and always try my best. I’m looking forward to being able to influence the school and make it a better place for students.”
Courtney Sinclair, Middle School Captain: “You get to do so many different things as Captain, announce things in assembly, host events, and create new events. We have a very big student leader group of 16 people with so many ideas, so I think we’re going to make amazing changes this year. I think the qualities of a Captain go by our school qualities, which are great, Godliness, respect, excellence, attitude and teachability."

HOME LOAN REVIEW CAN AVOID MORTGAGE FATIGUEYour home loan might be the right one for you at the time you take it out, but it is important to conduct regular reviews to avoid mortgage fatigue.
Mortgage fatigue – the feeling that after several years of dutifully making fortnightly or monthly mortgage repayments, you’re no closer to actually owning your home – is common among many homeowners.
Many people do a lot of homework when initially working out what is the best home loan for them, but then tend to very much ‘set and forget’.
Once the loan is in place, they really don’t think too much more about their home loan other than making the regular repayments or when changes in interest rates are announced.
The fact is, while your home loan might be the right one for you at the time you take it out, you should review the loan regularly, as there might be a more suitable option as your circumstances change, or as new products are launched.
Contrary to the popular view that home loans are pretty boring, the home loan market is
dynamic, with new innovations in home loan products and structures being released on a regular basis.
If you put your home loan in place two years ago, since that time, for example, there has been the release of a new range of offset account facilities and professional packages which may be better suited to some people’s needs.
Alternatively, it may be that a change in your own personal circumstances prompts the review. But the real X factor in this current environment is
the differences in what is being offered by the various lenders.
While it used to be that the banks used to match each other on rate and product features, there are now marked differences between what is on offer. If you don’t feel like there is any light at the end of the tunnel in terms of really making inroads into your mortgage, seek advice.
Talk to your local Smartline personal mortgage adviser Teresa Harrison on 5422 9458 to find how you could get a lot more mileage from your home loan and have it work harder for you.

Jobs for the yard in April• Plant sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush
peas. Plant as either seed or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe also try asparagus peas.
• Start to reduce the frequency you mow the lawn and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months.
• Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years.• It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your hippeastrum and lilium
bulbs.• Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant
these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix.VegetablesPlant beetroot, broccoli, radish, cabbage, leafy lettuce, carrot, celery, cauliflower, asian greens, garlic, leeks, spring onion, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, kohl rabi, capsicum, chilli, silver beet, beans and tomato.FlowersPlant alyssum, petunia, marigold, carnation, sweet pea, gaillardia, everlasting daisy, livingstone daisy, sunflower, verbena, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, nemesia, iceland poppy, dianthus, cleome and salvia.

Glass House Mountains Advancement Network GMANContributed by Gwen MalcolmThe caterpillars are out in force and contrary to what you would expect, we are excited! There has been numerous reportings of Richmond Birdwing Butterfly caterpillars across the Sunshine Coast, but best of all in Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains area. Planting of the vines in this area has only taken place seriously in recent years, and butterflies, larvae and pupae are now being seen as a result of this.If you have planted Pararistolochia praevenosa vines on your property, we would like you to check for caterpillars, or pupae of the butterfly. Since the status of the butterfly is listed as ‘vulnerable,’ the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network keeps records of where the vines have been planted, and butterfly and larvae sightings. If you have not registered your vines on a survey form, or would like to report caterpillars or butterflies you have seen, please phone 5493 0029.This is still an excellent time to plant extra vines, and currently we have good stocks in our nursery at $6.00. We will also accept used six inch pots in good clean condition, suitable for vines. Other sizes are unsuitable and only make it difficult for us as we have to send them to the recycle facility. Please phone the above number for ‘drop off’ times or plant sales.

This is a Heart Foundation group activity with certificates
being awarded for the number of walks completed. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. Please consider joining our friendly little group for a great start to the day. We do hope to see you soon.Families of ADF personnelFamilies of serving personnel of the ADF are invited to a morning tea at Beerwah Veterans Drop In Centre, 1 Free Street, Beerwah, at 10.00am on the first Friday of the month, April 1. This invitation extends to all the Glasshouse Country area. Come and meet the Welfare Officers and others with family members away. Any queries phone 5439 0641.Call for Volunteers The Landsborough Museum is in urgent need of volunteers of all ages who have some spare time to help with the day to day running of the museum such as cleaning, filing, researching, data entry, meeting and greeting etc. No special skills required. Let me introduce to you my awesome boy, little Max (being held by Wil, the now big brother!) He was born on February 28 and hasn’t looked back since! The other day I was able to take him into a classroom full of kids at Beerburrum State School to show him off to my RE class. The students couldn’t get close enough to the capsule and everyone wanted to feel how soft his head was or let him squeeze their finger. It’s amazing to think that only a few days earlier he had been curled up in a little ball of fluid in the very warm and strange world of the womb. Now he was breathing air and experiencing something new every minute. While I’m only just getting to know this little man, it’s exciting to know that God knows him intimately already.Psalm 139 says "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;... Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book,
before one of them came to be. (NIV)"God knows each of us and has a plan for our lives that will bring us purpose, fulfillment and bless those around us, helping others to see the love of God through what we do. He has given each of us gifts and we need to get to know Him to find out what we are to do with them.Do your plans for the future include getting to know the one who created you and loves you the most? Why not decide right now that you will seek to know God through His Son Jesus Christ and learn of the life that He has planned for you. To figure out
what we were designed for, we must inquire of the designer! Trying to plan our lives without His input will always fall short of His destiny for us. Anyway while you’re contemplating that, I plan to go for a nap. Someone was on feeding duty last night!See you in churchBrendan
