I loved the can-do attitude of the newsletter and the strong sense of family bonds it por-trayed. It is a nice mix of social and support functions."

BIG SISTERS
Contact: Amanda Fosberg We offer a "Big Sister" to paid MMM members that are
pregnant and/or are new moms of multiples during the first 3
months after giving birth. We pair you up with a member that
has multiples like you have (or will have). The idea is for the
big sister to check in with her little sister often— to offer
support, advice, help, etc. as needed. Then she reports to
the group at each meeting on how her "little sister" is doing.
The little sister can also contact her big sister as needed.
Please contact Amanda to get hooked up with a "big sister"
today! If your multiples are over a year old and are
interested in becoming a ―big sister‖ contact Amanda today.

Out of the Minds of Multiple Moms (not to be confused with Multiple Moms that are Outta Their Minds!!)
You Can’t Flush a Fart By Jennifer Harte, mom to 4 year old twins, Ty and Quinn
I’m constantly amazed at the soundtrack of my life.
Here is the short list:
You can’t flush a fart. Ty was potty training and really
into flushing the toilet. I’ve got to draw the line some-
where.
Mommy needs a time out. I used this one yesterday when
they were barraging me with “Mommy, mommy, mommy”. I
set the timer for 4 minutes and told them I was in time
out. They lasted 45 seconds before trying to break my
time out. Next time I’m going to make the minutes of my
time out equal to my age instead of theirs.
Mother Mary on a Motorcycle, Oh Holy Night, Sweet
Sassy Molassy. I had the biggest potty mouth before
kids. I’m a very expressive person and I need something
to exclaim. The list of exclamations is long and clean and
remarkably effective when frustrated.
Because I made that body and I’ll not have you break-
ing it. This is most often said to Ty who is a bit of a
daredevil.
The United States Government prohibits negotiating
with terrorists. Sometimes it gets old saying “Because I
said so” over and over.
I think I’ll skip dinner and meet you for drinks. I set
about parenthood with the idea that I would be the go out
and have fun mommy. The mom I am is so different than
the mom I told myself I would be. Most nights I would
much rather enjoy the company of my kids for dinner and
then go out with friends once they’re in bed.
Mommy, you’re mean. My response: Thank you; that was
the sweetest thing I’ve heard all day. I consider this a
compliment because if I’m setting limits and following
through I feel like that is a job well done.
I love you Mommy. They hear loving things so they say
loving things. Mission accomplished.

Moms on the Go!!!
Being a mother of triplets plus an older child can be a handful but finding time to exercise doesn’t
have to be a challenge. For me, running has been a fairly new form of exercise that has improved my
health and reduced the amount of stress I feel on a daily basis. We all know how stressful it can be taking
care of children every day.
I started running in April 2010 and could only run about a minute before I had to stop and walk to
catch my breath. Now a little over a year later, I am running 5K races on a regular basis, have completed a
10.8K race and am beginning to train for my first half marathon. Most of the races I run are part of the
Fidelis 6-pack series through the YMCA in Cortland but there are race schedules for all of central New
York if anyone is interested in signing up for one.
My running improved by using an interval technique such as running 1-minute – walking 5- minutes repeatedly for a
period of 30-minutes. As I got stronger and started losing some weight I gradually increased the running time while decreasing the
walking time until I could run a full mile without stopping to walk. My current training consists of 4-5 runs per week that are 3-4
miles long each. In addition to that I complete a longer run on the weekend to prepare for the half marathon. I also do some
weight training DVDs a couple times a week to help work the areas that running doesn’t.
Now the question everyone asks me is how does a busy mom find the time to run so much? My answer to that is I make
myself find the time. I feel so much better on the days that I run. I feel less stressed and tired and I find that I have more energy to
deal with the kids. During the week my runs last about 30-40 minutes and I try to go in the morning, but if I can’t then I go at night
after my husband gets home from work. On Saturday mornings I go for my long run which lasts anywhere from 1 – 1 ½ hours and
during this time the kids either stay home with dad or play at the park with dad while they wait for me to get back. I also have
taken the kids to the track with me if I have no other option and let them play in the middle while I run. Even
though I might not get as good a run in with their distraction, any run is better than no run at all! Sometimes
my husband will walk with the kids while I run. It’s great for them to see that exercising and being healthy is a
priority for me and our family.
My advice to any other mom is to just start. I found that starting was the hardest part in the whole
process. Once you get going you want to keep going, so I say just start. If you can only run 30 seconds at a
time, that’s a start.
Karen LaVancha lives in Cortland and is the mother of 3 year old triplets, Andrew, Katelyn
and Kirsten and 6 year old daughter, Jenna.
School’s Out!!!!!
