United States trade trip to open doors for Queensland
A trade mission to the United States by Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business Leeanne Enoch will open doors for greater collaboration with some of the world’s most influential innovation and science leaders.
Following on from last week's highly successful Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit, Ms Enoch arrived in Houston today to continue conversations, pursue investment opportunities and explore pathways for Queensland startups, technology businesses and researchers to partner with key US companies and universities.
From Houston, Ms Enoch will travel to College Station and Austin in Texas and then fly to California for meetings with startups, corporates and investors in San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose.
“The United Statesremains a dominant player in the global economy, especially for the development of new technologies and access to venture capital,” Ms Enoch said.
“This trip is a chance to inform US investors and partners about the huge potential of Queensland, see firsthand some world-class research centres and innovation hubs, and identify new opportunities in the US market.”
Ms Enoch said many Queensland and Australian technology firms were already working in the US and she wanted to strengthen those ties to deliver even greater benefits for the state.
“North America is our fifth largest merchandise trade partner and our largest investor and it offers strong prospects for Queensland bioscience and tech startups that hunger for access to new customers and capital,” she said.
“The Queensland Government has forged strong ties with the United States with a number of agreements and collaborative projects that support breakthrough science and translate this research into new products and services.
“Our program of business events is directed towards strengthening our commercial ties and encouraging emerging technology companies to make Queensland their springboard into markets in the Asia Pacific.”
Minister Enoch said the Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit had demonstrated that the State was coming of age as an innovation and entrepreneurship powerhouse in the region. International investors and thought-leaders attending the summit had been impressed with the next generation of tech businesses emerging in Queensland.
“Organisations worldwide are looking for innovative technologies and new ways of doing business across key sectors including agriculture, digital technology, life sciences and biotechnology, and we need to ensure we are answering that call,” she said.
The trip will include visits to Johnson & Johnson Innovation’s newly opened JLABS incubator facility, Texas A&M University, Capital Factory, Salesforce Ventures, and EA Sports; tours of the Johnson Space Centre and attending the 2016 Silicon Valley AgTech conference.
Ms Enoch will also hold preparatory meetings ahead of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk leading a Queensland research and business delegation to the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco from 6 to 9 June.

Texas visit to boost Queensland biotech opportunities
HOUSTON, TEXAS: Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch is fostering Queensland’s strategic partnership with one of the world’s leading health innovation companies during a visit to one of their innovation labs today.
Ms Enoch is visiting Houston, Austin and San Francisco this week on a trade mission to promote innovation and investment opportunities for Queensland business and startups as well as developing partnerships with key scientific and innovation agencies.
The Minister will today visit Johnson & Johnson Innovation’s newly opened JLABS facility at the Texas Medical Center’s new Innovation Institute in Houston.
Ms Enoch said the Queensland Government was working with Johnson & Johnson Innovation on a number of initiatives, including the upcoming opening of a new Johnson & Johnson Innovation Partnering Office at QUT.
“Johnson & Johnson Innovation is one of the world’s leaders in mentoring and supporting the rising stars in health innovation, providing budding entrepreneurs and innovative companies with the tools, support and environment in which their ideas can flourish and their companies can thrive,” Ms Enoch said.
“Visiting facilities like JLABS will deliver insights into how we can better support early stage companies in the health sector within Queensland, especially when the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Partnering Office opens at QUT.
“The new centre will facilitate access by Queensland researchers and companies to the vast resources and expertise across Johnson & Johnson Innovation’s scientific research, investor and commercial business sectors with the aim of nurturing and accelerating Queensland’s life sciences ecosystem.
“Having Johnson & Johnson Innovation set up shop in Brisbane is a real shot in the arm to the local life science and medical technologies sectors.
The company’s presence will provide an important critical mass for the successful development and growth of the industry.”
The centre is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $180 million Advance Queensland innovation and jobs plan.
Three major partnerships will commercialise Queensland’s biggest and best discoveries, including Johnson & Johnson and the Queensland University of Technology, the University of Queensland and Emory University in the United States, and Siemens Healthcare, the Queensland University of Technology and the Translational Research Institute on ground-breaking MRI research and innovation.
The partnership has already supported the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge, launched in September.
The competition is designed to discover some of the best health innovations in the world which will bring benefits for patients and help to create future jobs and business opportunities.
Ms Enoch said there were three $100,000 prizes up for grabs, in the fields of therapeutics, medical devices and consumer healthcare.
“The Queensland Government is providing the prize money as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $180 million Advance Queensland initiative,” she said.

Innovation network promises global opportunities for Qld businesses
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS: The Queensland Government today secured a major foothold for Queensland businesses in the United States with the signing of a landmark agreement.
During a visit to Texas A&M University, Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch announced the Queensland Government had become an executive member of the Open Worldwide Innovation Network (OWIN), providing Queensland innovative businesses and entrepreneurs with access to international partners and markets.
Established by Texas A&M in 2013, OWIN is a not-for-profit innovation network seeking to promote market access, entrepreneurship and technology commercialisation. Texas A&M is the third largest university in the US, number one in applied agricultural research and an acknowledged leader in commercialisation.
Alongside Texas A&M, other executive members include the Foreign Trade and Export Agency in one of Europe’s most dynamic innovation hubs, Wallonia in Belgium, and the commercialisation arm of Tsinghua University, one of China’s top universities.
“In Queensland, we have an excellent reputation for innovative products and the quality of our research,” Ms Enoch said.
“But one of the key challenges we face is the ability to commercialise ideas, and generate exports and investment in global markets.
“Our OWIN membership will open more doors for Queensland’s businesses. OWIN members including Texas A&M, are committed to providing Queensland companies with local assistance to set up operations in overseas markets, and source research and commercial partners”.
Ms Enoch said having access to this support in the US, Europe and China would help accelerate product development and grow exports.
“This puts us in a strong position globally, providing access to new customers, venture financing, and help address barriers to market access,” she said.
“Queensland’s Trade and Investment Commissioner for North America, David Camerlengo, helped to identify this important partnership, and his office in Houston will play a key role in helping Queensland businesses to benefit from our membership of OWIN over the next two years.”
Four Queensland businesses, iPug, Hydrus Tech, GHD and Happen joined the Minister at today’s meeting to explore business opportunities in the United States and tap into the support that will now be available through the OWIN agreement.
“It’s great to see our OWIN membership is already opening doors for Queensland businesses to help them realise their global ambitions”.
Mr Nicholas Mathiou from Griffith University’s commercialisation arm, Griffith Enterprise, welcomed Queensland’s executive membership of OWIN.
“The research priorities at Texas A&M, for example, align very closely with those of Queensland’s research institutions, including innovation in agriculture, biotechnology, renewable energy and nanotechnology. There seems to be a commonality and the potential for very good synergy,” Mr Mathiou said.
Mr Tim McLennan from QUT’s commercial arm Bluebox said Queensland would reap big benefits by becoming an OWIN executive member.

Queensland positioning as global startup hub
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: The Palaszczuk Government is seeking to entice international startups to Queensland with grants of up to $100,000 (AUS) to relocate to the Sunshine State in an Australian-first initiative.
While visiting Silicon Valley today, Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch hosted the international launch of the Hot DesQ program which aims to lure successful international and interstate entrepreneurs to Queensland.
“The Palaszczuk Government’s Hot DesQ initiative is part of our Advance Queensland innovation and jobs plan,” Ms Enoch said.
“Hot DesQ is unashamedly about attracting international and interstate startups to relocate to Queensland for at least six months by offering up to $100,000 (AUS) for them to pursue business opportunities and help grow our innovation ecosystem.
“Startups from anywhere in the world have an opportunity to harness Queensland's unique industry strengths in areas like life sciences and medtech, agriculture, mining, aviation and games and software.
"Hot DesQ will attract emerging entrepreneurs and startup teams, successful Aussie expats, and established startups to Queensland, where they can leverage off our proven track record in world-class research, technology and innovation to grow their businesses.
Ms Enoch said Hot DesQ will also give global and interstate startups a launching pad to expand into the burgeoning Asia-Pacific markets from a Queensland base.
Successful applicants will be hosted by one of Queensland’s startup service providers in locations including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Townsville and Toowoomba.
“By basing the incoming startups in existing innovation hubs around Queensland we will be able to embed them in our Queensland startup community and connect them to industry and research expertise,” she said.
The Hot DesQ initiative is part of the $180 million Advance Queensland initiative which is providing a suite of programs to support the growth of startups and business, and increase entrepreneurship, innovation and venture investment.
Ms Enoch said that the program is targeted at emerging startups as well as those who are already established and looking to expand into the booming Asia-Pacific markets. Additionally, successful Australian expats wanting to try their next venture at home are eligible to apply.
Applications for the program are now open via www.HotDesQ.com.au.
Ms Enoch is visiting Houston, Austin and San Francisco between 30 April and 8 May 2016.
Today’s announcement was made at the Queensland Reception function at Sunnyvale, California. The Minister also visited EA Sports, Stanford d.school and Facebook.

Innovation Minister heads to Silicon Valley to support technology in
our farming future
PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA: The Queensland Government is exploring opportunities for the state’s agricultural technology industries to collaborate with global leaders in the field as part of Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch’s attendance at the 2016 Silicon Valley AgTech Conference.
During the AgTech conference Minister Enoch met with high-profile industry leaders and representatives of top companies and investors in agricultural technology, including Terviva and UC Davis.
“Queensland’s food and agriculture sector is our second biggest export earner, contributing more than $13 billion a year to the state’s economy, and there’s room to grow because we currently produce enough food for only a small percentage of the Asian population,” Ms Enoch said.
“We could earn millions more in export dollars in the coming years by taking advantage of growing food markets.”
“However, to remain competitive and seize the opportunities, our farmers and agricultural businesses will need to continue to innovate.”
The Palaszczuk Government recently announced it will invest a further $2 million in agricultural innovation over the next three years through the Advance Queensland innovation and jobs plan.
“Last month we awarded 10 Advance Queensland Research Fellowships and PhD Scholarships to researchers who are leading agricultural projects ranging from better animal feedstocks and pest control, to improving crop yields and irrigation water,” Ms Enoch said.
Ms Enoch said recent developments in plant gene editing, automation, telecommunications, remote monitoring and drones highlight the critical role science and innovation plays in farming and offered exciting opportunities for the agriculture industry to increase yields and reduce costs.
“We want to build strong multinational relationships to ensure our farmers have access to the latest technologies that will help them farm smarter,” she said.
“The AgTech conference has been a great opportunity to meet with potential collaborators and investors and promote Queensland’s agtech industry, research capability and startups – particularly as farmers ramp up productivity to meet rising Asian demand.”
“With all this activity, we expect agtech startups to capitalise on the opportunities and investment companies to jump on board.”
This week Minister Enoch visited Houston, Austin and San Francisco in the United States to promote international collaboration as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s focus on innovation and creating opportunities for Queensland businesses.
The Minister has also held meetings ahead of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk leading a Queensland research and business delegation to the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco which will be held from 6 to 9 June.
