Praying the Gospel Lectio Divina

Here is a new set of instructions for praying the Scriptures using the Lectio Divina method. They have been collated by Jesuit Fr James

Martin Read, Think, Pray, Act "Lectio Divina" in Four Easy Steps

By: James Martin, SJ A Simple Approach. Lectio divina is a way of

encountering God through Scripture—normally, by taking a specific passage from the Bible as the basis for this prayer. 1. Reading: What does the text say? First, you read the text. At the most basic level, you ask:

What is going on in this Bible passage? Some-times a Bible commentary is helpful to enable you to better understand the context. 2. Meditation: What is God saying to me

through the text? At this point, you ask whether

there is something that God might want to re-veal to you through this passage. Often, it might connect with something in your life.

3. Prayer: What do I want to say to God about the text? After meditating on this passage, you might find yourself fearful of what you feel called to do. If it means standing up for some-one who has been mistreated, or even standing

up for yourself, this might frighten you. You might worry about being rejected as Jesus was. You might even fear being rejected by those close to you, as Jesus was in his hometown. 4. Action: What do I want to do, based on my

prayer? Finally, you act. Prayer should move us to action, even if it simply makes us want to be more compassionate and faithful. You might care to view Fr Martin’s utube at

The Week after Theophany

This week the continuous reading of the gospel returns to Mark for the weekdays. We are dealing in the main with the Passion Narrative. Saturday has a particular reading from Matthew while returns to the Lukan cycle for Sundays All these gospel passages are extracts from the Byzantine Gospel Lectionary as used in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. I have selected the regular daily readings for the purpose of prayer and re-flection. Reflections have again been chosen from Fr Brendan Byrne’s commentary.

Monday 25th

January (Mark 11:1-11) Reflection While riding on a donkey may communicate a sense of humility, it was also a royal means of transport in biblical tradition. The provision that no one had yet ridden upon it indicates its fitness for sacral usage. Finally, the explanation the disciples are to give when questioned about untying the colt, “The Kyrios has need of it,” is suffi-

ciently ambiguous to signal a divine as well as human requisitioning: the kyrios at

one level may refer to its human master, but for readers of Mark the kyrios is also the “Lord” for whom the “way” has been “prepared” and is now to complete his “way” by entering the Messiah’s city.

Tuesday 26th

January (Mark 14:10-42)

Reflection In the Passion as Mark describes it, Jesus’ conflict with the demonic comes to a cli-max as, in the utter loneliness of his death, he plumbs human alienation from God to its depth. In contrast to the other evangelists, Mark does not hesitate to portray Jesus’ “obedience unto death” in all its unrelieved starkness. Jesus, whose authority had

Page 6: 30 28 24 32 · 2016-01-22 · Olga Koscuk $50.00 П. Іванюк $50.00 Michael Masendycz $50.00 W. & A. Orfini $50.00 Pavlyshyn $30.00 Stefan Kekoc $25.00 Maria Gembarovski $20.00

shone out from the start of the gospel, confounding demons and human adversaries with equal force, now surrenders himself to violence and abuse. As humanly he shrinks from the “cup” that now stands before him, he will seek comfort and compan-ionship from his closest friends and find them wanting. Most poignant of all, as hu-man violence is wreaked upon him in ever-increasing intensity, is the sense of “silence from heaven” that will culminate in his cry of abandonment just before he dies on the cross. Wednesday 27

th January (Mark 14:43-15:1)

Reflection

Jesus has wrestled with the “cup” that lies before him and in obedience to his Fa-ther’s will accepted it. Now with calm dignity he allows himself to be taken into the physical power of those who will be its instruments. Facilitating their work, as we al-ready know and Jesus himself has predicted, is Judas. The gospel underlines his treachery by reminding us that he is “one of the Twelve” and by describing how he turns a customary respectful and affectionate greeting into a way of identifying Jesus that will be in the end fatal. Judas is now completely associated with a “crowd” from the chief adversaries (chief priests, scribes, and elders) who have come out against Jesus with weapons of violence: swords and clubs. Without further ado these lay hands on him and arrest him. Thursday 28

th January (Mark 15:1-18)

Reflection In the overall action of the Passion story the failed stratagem with Barabbas may seem fairly incidental, but at the deeper level running through the account it is truly significant. The name “Barabbas” means “son of the Father.” The primary identity of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark is that of God’s beloved Son, a God whom, uniquely in this gospel, he addresses as “Abba.” Jesus is, then, “Bar Abba,” the son of Abba. The

leaders of Israel, like the wicked tenants in the parable, have brought about that the

crowd should choose for themselves a Barabbas implicated in rebellion and blood-shed and, by the same token, reject “Bar Abba,” the One who is the beloved Son of their God. They have not “respected” the Son. Instead of what he had to bring—the Rule of God—they have made a choice foreshadowing a later choice for rebellion and violence that will lead to the destruction of their city and complete submission to the rule of Rome.

Friday 29th

January (Mark 15:22, 25, 33-34) Reflection At the ninth hour (three p.m.) we hear an utterance from Jesus: the terrible cry of der-eliction: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” He has been rejected by his people, deserted by his companions; now he expresses a sense of abandonment by the God whose very will he is carrying out by hanging on the cross. Son of God though he is, he experiences at depth the terrible sense of divine absence that so often accompanies human suffering. The darkness without is matched by an intense dark-ness within. Jesus does not utter a cry of despair—he is still calling on God. But it is a cry of dereliction because no answer will come from God until he has shared to the full the lot of all human beings in death.

Saturday 30th

January (Matthew 5:14-19) Reflection Jesus may appear to sweep aside the Torah. In fact he is authoritatively declaring and fulfilling what he will later call its “weightier matters”: justice, mercy, and faith. To live out the Torah is to practice “surpassing righteousness”—“surpassing” in the sense that it surpasses that of critics, here portrayed as “the scribes and Pharisees.” From a legalist perspective such a fulfilment may seem a less exacting option. The crucial thing is that the demand comes from following the example of God, and giv-ing priority always to love, compassion, generosity and trust in dealing with one’s follow human beings. Such is the “perfection” required in the community of the king-dom. Sunday 31

st January (Luke 18:36-43)

35th Sunday after Pentecost When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’ Then he shouted, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet; but he shouted even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stood still and ordered the man to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ He said, ‘Lord, let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith has saved you.’ Immediately he regained his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, praised God.

Luke 18:36-43 Reflection It is ironical, in view of the “blindness” with regard to his fate that the apostles dis-play, that the last cure Jesus works in the Gospel is to restore sight to a blind person. As Jesus approaches Jericho, a blind beggar, correctly hailing him by his messianic title, “Son of David,” cries out f0or help. The disciples, once again playing the role of minders, try to silence the man. But the beggar, another of those marginalized ones who truly know their need for salvation, has the faith to break through barriers to ob-tain what he wants. The healing brought about through the faith of an individual has once again become a communal experience of salvation.

We ask parishioners who have recently changed their address to please notify the parish so that we can update our records.
