1. Formation of Regular Subjunctive Verbs
To form the subjunctive you will:
1. Start off with the “yo” form of the present tense for the given verb
2. Drop the “-o” from the “yo” form of the verb
3. Add the opposite vowel of the infinitive (-ar =e and –er/-ir =a) & go, go, go:

2. Stem-changers/ Double Vowel: e → ie & o → ue (these are the same
stem changers as in the present indicative). Changes occur in all forms
EXCEPT nosotros.

4. Stem-Changing Hybrid Verbs: are double vowel (e→ie/o→ue) & single
(e→i/o→u) vowel stem-changers in one single verb! Stem-change to a
double vowel in all but the “we” form & stem-change to a single vowel in the

5. Orthographic Verbs (-car, -gar, -zar )
In the present subjunctive, verbs ending in –car change to –QU, -gar to
–GU, -zar to –C. These spelling changes are the same as those that occur in the “yo”
form in the preterite EXCEPT, the orthographic change in the subjunctive occurs in ALL
FORMS.

6. Orthographic Verbs (-cer, -cir,)
In the present subjunctive, verbs ending in –cer & –cir are said to also be orthographic
verbs that spell change to –zc in ALL FORMS of the subjunctive.

In its simplest form, the subjunctive consists of:
R WEDDING

R = recommendations, preference, insistence, suggestions, advice
W = wishes, hopes, desires
E = emotions, regrets
D = doubt, denial
D = disbelief
I = impersonal expressions
N = nonexistent/unknown, negation
G = God expressions

¡OJO! Make sure that there is a change of subject in the two clauses! If
not, you’ll just use an infinitive.
For example:
Ellos no quieren estudiar.
They don’t want to study.
Also, “ojalá” isn’t a verb. So you don’t have to conjugate it.
It will always be “ojalá.”
Por ejemplo:
Ojalá que no tengamos tarea.
Hopefully we don’t have homework.

No es cierto que It’s not certain that No es verdad que It’s not true that
No estar seguro de que to not be sure that *No first subject or que needed Por ejemplo:
No creemos que Eva nos diga la verdad.
We don’t believe that Eva tells us the truth.
¡OJO! If there is NO doubt, use the indicative!
If there is NO doubt or No disbelief, you do NOT use the subjunctive!

The preposition a is used before the direct object of a verb if the direct object is:
