coach Roslein Wilkes presented Danielle with her certificate, in her role as national trainer for the New Zealand Riding for the Disabled organisation.

Roslein says Danielle had worked hard for the organisation, starting when she was young.

“This qualification takes a lot of work and there are only a few others in the country.

“We are lucky in Marlborough to have more than one. Many organisations don’t have any fully qualified coaches.”

Danielle says there are fewer than 15 fully qualified coaches in New Zealand.

“I’m now a fully qualified Riding for the Disabled coach. I’m also a volunteer training course facilitator, selected by the national organisation to go around the country and hold training courses for volunteers.

“I have also finished a coaches’ mentoring course. I have a certificate for that to mentor

other coaches.”She says she started working at the

Marlborough organisation when she was 11, doing odd jobs in return for being able

to ride the horses.“At 18, I had no idea what I wanted to do,

apart from wanting something with children or horses. I was humming and hawing, and came here to volunteer for a while so that I was doing something useful.

“I was quite lucky, it all just fell into place. They were looking for another staff member and I started my training.

“It took quite a few years but here we are.”Danielle says she achieved her assistant

coach qualification early on, but the full qualification took a lot longer. It includes a university-level medical unit.

“It takes a long time to complete.”She encourages people to consider working

for the organisation, especially people who might like to volunteer, either with groom-ing the horses or in the office.

“I love my job. It’s so rewarding. I get the best of both worlds, working with children and horses. I didn’t think I’d be able to find a job like that.”

Danielle achieves rare coaching qualification

By Cathie BellThere are many different ways

of learning, and the Creative Music Trust is working to intro-duce music therapy throughout Marlborough.

The trust is a non-profit or-ganisation set up by Liz McKay early last year.

Last week was Music Therapy Week, and Creative Kids Trust organised sessions at Whitney Street School and Marlborough Girls’ College to demonstrate the therapy’s use.

Liz says the trust was set up to grow ‘wonderful children’ through the arts.

“That’s our main goal, it’s for the children.”

Support from the new health

hub in Blenheim has been ‘phe-nomenal’, she says. They have been referring children to the trust, but also sending their physiotherapists into groups

alongside the music therapists. The Trust’s sessions help the

children build fundamental skills and connections, Liz says.

“We had a little girl last year who was fairly immobile. She is now able to stand on her own, singing ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ to her group on her own.

“Another child has an amazing ear. She’s worked out the music by ear, and is able to communi-cate through the keyboard now with her family.”

Trust administrator Sara Rog-erson says there was a need in Marlborough.

“Liz wanted to start with one foundation group, but began with three. We doubled ses-sions this year, and there are six

groups now.”The students range from zero

to 18 years. Liz says she has a little babies group with mums, fostering the bonding between mothers and children, and bring-ing the families into the groups, along with the community to get wider support groups around the children.

The Trust plans to expand from music into other arts.

Liz say in the long-term they are interested in offering dance or writing as well.

Sara says the Trust wants to grow and needs to find the fund-ing for that.

“Liz has done well out of grants to date, but we need to find more funding to keep up with growth.”

Music helps children to learn

Music Therapist Yvonne Mac-Sweeny ran a class at Whitney Street School last week to celebrate Music Therapy Week.

Take a moment exhibition delayedAn IHC travelling exhibition that provides insight into the lives of people with an intellectual disability due to open to the public on Friday 10 June at the ASB Civic Theatre in Blenheim has been postponed, due to unforeseen circumstances and will now be opening in October. The exhibition uses photographs by Christchurch photographer Bridgit Anderson and video shot and edited by Auckland video maker Sam Morrison to explore how the lives of people with intellectual disability are not so different from others in the community.

Story and photo by Cathie BellKaikoura MP Stuart Smith is

to lead a delegation to Norway to attend a conference on salmon farming.

The National MP told a Marl-borough Chamber of Commerce lunch that he has been asked by Aquaculture New Zealand to go on the trip.

The conference, called Aqua Vision, runs in mid-June. Stuart leaves on Saturday next week.

Also in the delegation are Marlborough District Council representatives and staff, fellow National Party MP Sarah Dowie from Invercargill, Environment Southland representatives, and the Southland District Council mayor Gary Tong and staff.

The trip is being funded by Aquaculture New Zealand and

the Rogaland County Council, which is hosting the conference.

Stuart says attending the con-ference is a “great opportunity for me” to learn more about the industry in Norway, the largest producer of farmed salmon in the world.

Norway is an oil producer and earlier in the year when oil was selling for US$30 a barrel, they were making more from one salmon than from a barrel of oil.

“I am very pleased to go over there and learn as much as pos-sible.

“I acknowledge there are some environmental concerns about farming salmon in the Sounds. I am looking to find out how they do things, I know there are new technologies.

“They have some issues NZ

King Salmon don’t have here, such as sea lice and other dis-eases.”

Councillor David Oddie who is going on behalf of the Marlbor-ough District Council says the trip is a good opportunity to look at how another region operates marine farms, but also to build relationships with the industry and central government.

The Marlborough Sounds was an important area with many interests, and the council needs to be engaged with all parties to ensure sustainable management of the region.

“As a councillor, I want to be around the table, I don’t want that opportunity taken from us.”

Aquaculture NZ chief executive Gary Hooper says the delegation of New Zealand politicians, coun-

cil officials and marine farmers is an information-gathering exercise to Norway as part of efforts to plan for sustainable salmon farm-ing in this country.

It is timed to coincide with the world’s pre-eminent salmon farming conference, AquaVision, which is held every two years.

The delegation will learn from the experiences of their European counterparts on several aspects of salmon farming including, planning, environmental manage-ment, social licence as well as see the latest technical innovations.

“It’s about learning the best practices and getting the best information to put us collectively in the best position to consider the opportunity of salmon farming in New Zealand.”

Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith speaks to a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday.

By Cathie BellSounds Air will decide next week whether

to take on the Blenheim to Christchurch route dropped by Air New Zealand, managing director Andrew Crawford says.

Air NZ announced this week it would drop the loss-making route from July 31.

Andrew says Sounds Air has just started investigating whether to start flying that route, and a decision is likely by the end of next week.

Marlborough Chamber of Commerce general manager Stephen Gullery says Marlborough businesses need to be able to connect by air with the major centres and other regions of New Zealand in a quick and efficient manner.

He’s pleased to receive an assurance from Air NZ management that the current traffic volume between Blenheim and Wellington as well as Auckland means these services are maintained.

“The new schedule from Air NZ from October 30th onward introduces a later flight from Wellington to Blenheim to better meet

the needs of business personnel returning from other centres including Christchurch.

“The Chamber is suggesting to Air NZ that minor change on the scheduling would benefit those making connections to Christ-church.”

Stephen says he will continue to discuss with Air NZ and other regional airlines schedule issues to and from Marlborough.

“As a Chamber of Commerce, we acknowl-edge that Air NZ is a business and needs to make a profit and from time to time need to review and alter schedules.

“Marlborough’s economy is growing, both in our existing industries and tourism. With the proposed new five star hotel will come a demand for access to Blenheim from all New Zealand’s International airports.

“We trust Air NZ will continue to watch the Marlborough market and readjust with market demand.”

Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says the cut is disappointing and frustrating.

Fortunately Marlborough had good direct air links with Auckland which was the main arrival point for overseas visitors, he said.

“Most domestic tourists and international visitors seeing the South Island arrive in our region by road or rail, or fly in from Wel-lington, so I don’t see this as likely to have major impact on Marlborough’s tourism.”

The greatest immediate inconvenience would be for business interests, Alistair says.

“Now that Air New Zealand has left this vacuum I would anticipate our successful local operator Sounds Air might see the opportunity here so let’s wait and see what happens.”

Sounds Air looks at taking on Chch route

Harcourts Marlborough has returned from its National Conference last week with some very impressive awards.

The Marlborough team earned the title of being the ‘second highest revenue earning Harcourts office’ for its size last year, while sales consultant Angela Bowers took out second place for the ‘most Mortgage Express referrals’.

Around 1000 delegates attended the conference, with the dinner being held last Wednesday.

Marlborough airline Sounds Air is looking at flying to Christchurch.

Council’s high S&P ratingThe Marlborough District Council has been awarded an “AA Stable” long term credit rating from rating agency Standard and Poor’s. No local authority in New Zealand has a rating higher than Marlborough and it is only one step below the AA+ awarded to the New Zealand Government. In award-ing this rating, Standard and Poor’s took into account the total debt of the whole Council Group, including MDC Holdings Ltd, Port Marlborough NZ Ltd and Marlborough Airport Ltd.It says the Council’s debt and liquidity policies are “very prudent as shown in its moderate level of debt and exceptional liquidity coverage”.The report also states Council’s govern-ance and oversight of its trading or-ganisation, Marlborough District Council Holdings Ltd and subsidiaries Port Marlborough NZ Ltd and Marlborough Airport Ltd, are strong.

Organisers of the upcoming Marlborough Home & Garden Show, running July 8-10 at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000, have an-nounced today that they have one free exhibitor stand to give away to a local community group.

Jade Promotions director Daniel Joll says; “This is a chance for a deserving community organisation to participate in a popular and upbeat event free of charge.

“There is a stand up for grabs, all applicants need to do is contact us and say why they think they deserve the free stand. The organisation that puts forward the best reason will receive free exhibiting space at the Show.

“Last year the Show attracted over 6,000 people, so it’s a fantastic chance for the success-ful community group to promote themselves

to the public. The Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 will be packed with products and inspira-tion for beautifying the home and garden, loads of show-only specials, free daily seminars and there will be a $4,200 show prize. We love pulling all that together for our show visitors, but it’s also really nice to be able to support local community groups when we can too,” he says.

Submissions will need to be in to Jade Promo-tions by June 15.

The Marlborough Home & Garden Show will run for three days from Friday 8 - Sunday 10 July at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.

The management contract for the Have-lock Mussel and Seafood Festival has been held by Marlborough 4 Fun for the past 12 years, but was re-tendered this year.

“The committee looks forward to work-ing with Go Marlborough as we further enhance and grow the festival to showcase the aquaculture industry and support the Havelock community.”

COUNCIL NEWS

Positive ageingGood dental health is an important part of ageing wellHealthy teeth and gums - or correctly fitting dentures - are required for effective chewing and swallowing, to ensure good nutrition. They’re also important for self-confidence – a smile helps with that positive feeling of wellbeing. The need for dental treatment may increase with age: old fillings may need replacing and, as gums recede, more of the tooth is exposed and becomes vulnerable to decay. However, the cost of professional dental care can be an issue for people on fixed incomes. • Low-income adults who need

emergency dental treatment can apply for a Special Needs Grant from Work and Income. The grant is a one-off payment.

•Some assistance is also available through Work and Income for dentures for people on low incomes.

•ACC pays costs associated with accident-related dental treatment.

•Wairau Hospital’s dental services provide limited low-cost services to outpatients such as community service card holders and people with special needs. A referral from a dentist or GP is usually needed. Contact Wairau

Hospital Dental section, phone 520 9670.

People in rest homes may have particular dental care needs and dental care is usually an extra cost, not included in a residential care contract. If you have a friend or relative in rest home care, check whether dental care is being included in their care. Remember such patients may not be able to care for their own oral hygiene and problems in their mouth can affect their ability to eat well which, in turn, affects overall health.

Marlborough residents may get a phone call sometime this month and be asked to rate the performance of the Marlborough District Council. An independent research firm SIL Research is conducting our annual Resident Satisfaction Survey by calling 800 residents with a 15-20 minute survey about council activities. The Council uses the results to measure its performance in key service areas, like land transport, libraries, water supply, waste water and community

facilities. The results help Council to understand public priorities and to plan for the future.Calls will be made to residential telephone numbers during the day, in the evenings and at weekends to reach a cross-section of residents reflecting the demographic makeup of the Marlborough population. During the rest of the year the Council does not make a practice of contacting large numbers of residents by telephone.

If we need to advise you of services being turned off, we will put a letter in your mail box or make public announcements in your neighbourhood with a loudhailer.Should you ever be contacted about Council services and you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to phone the Council.Marlborough District Council - Phone 520 740024 hours - 7 days a week phone line

All of them show off the region’s wonderful attributes.Walk the Black Jack Track at Whites Bay, explore our gold mining history and follow a gold trail. txt talk of the week

Many thanks to the group of people who rescued me after my fall in Wynen St carpark 27/5. Special thanks to the kind gentleman who bought me a cup of tea and to the very special lady who dressed my wounds and stayed with me. Your kindness is much appreciated.

Kindness appreciated

Thanks socksI want to thank ‘socks.’ The man directing traffic by Lister Court medical centre on Francis st. Twice last week he let my son sit in his ute while I went and got my car and even carried my son across the road because he could not walk. You are a credit to your company and thank you for your kindness. Shannyn.

BlenheimitesIf you live in Auckland you are an Aucklander, Nelson a Nelsonian, but Blenheim a Marlbur-ian? What’s with that huh?Reminds me of the saying “I used to be uncer-tain, now I’m not sure anymore”“Absolutely Positively Taihape”?????

Change has no purposeWhen I think of Blenheim or Marlborough I definitely don’t associate that with city. Let’s be honest it’s a blink town when you compare it to an actual city. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Don’t get me wrong change is good...But it needs to have a purpose. What is this purpose? Think of all the small businesses that will have to change signage, business cards etc to ac-commodate the new change. Something to think about.

Name suggestionsSome suggestions for Blenheims new name:ScottsvilleEgocityMonocrop MarlboroughHow pretentious, embarrassing, and arrogant to suggest that we call ourselves a city purely for financial gain.

The great electricity scam!Does anyone check their electricity bills, how can a $80 bill - Yes $80, thats what the lines fee is - become $250? The power bill company rip off final fee charges for meter rental, meter reading, admin levies, network service, what does any of it mean except tripling your bill. Can anyone explain why I cannot pay Marlborough Lines direct and supply my own smart meter? They are only $100 to buy. Work out what you have paid in rental fees over 60 years on 2 antique meters.

Blenheim! Let’s keep it that way. Why change the name when it’s been that for years. On our birth certificates, licenses, what a loaded waste of money if we change. Its on the map and people know where we are. Things in this town need to be put to rate payers to vote, not one person suggesting it, then it’s done. Better still, no need to vote, leave it how it is. Good old Blenheim.

Taylor DamA great job done clearing the trees around the Dam. A beautiful walk. Thank you.

Great serviceA shout out to the men at a Main St tyre outlet. Fantastic and thorough customer service and product. Easy use of courtesy car. Would recommended anytime. Nothing is a big deal and they always have time for you.

More great serviceFantastic customer service at the Springlands post office. Ladies are always so helpful and friendly. I love that they always take the time to give my preschoolers a stamp and attention no matter how busy they are. Thank you!

Hospital stay A-okHad to visit daystay at hospital Friday, was well looked after, great crew. Thank you.

Where will it end?Marlborough City. How stupid. Why is it Blen-heim’s problem? What will they rename Picton, Havelock, Renwick and Seddon? Why don’t they just add Blenheim to their wine labels.

Diminishing returnsIf the government tax hike on tobacco is to stop smoking how will they still raise 425 mil over next 4 yrs surely the rule of diminishing returns applies.

Easy tvWhat a great program on Channel One “The Chase.” Bit of knowledge and humour. Now Prime says they shifting and go to “www” etc. Or get someone in to sort it. Perhaps the “plonker” (about 3weeks ago) who was bleat-ing on about Free TV and not needing us (think u on more than cholesterol pills) could perhaps instruct us on an alternative on how to still get this channel without paying. Another pensioner.

Family violenceMen don’t usually report family violence be-cause they are usually laughed at. I’ve known of a woman being extremely violent towards her partner. She even tried to run him over. Yet because she was petite he wasn’t taken seriously. It’s peoples perception that need to change. Acting like it’s not that important on a man’s part is very arrogant. If women want to be treated equal then they should in every way. .. good and bad

Hurry up and waitYep. ACC is really working. I’ve had plenty of x-rays in my life and never paid anything. Now I have an injury covered by ACC I have to pay towards ultrasounds and x-rays it appears. Then there is the wait to see the specialist. Likely my injury will be healed by then. It’s now been 9 weeks since it occurred. It’s the hurry up and wait attitude that gets me.

The Blenheim Model Aero Club’s annual Fly-In event is being held this weekend at Indevin Bankhouse Estate, formerly Ara Vineyard.

The event is called ‘Top of the South Fun in the Sun’ and will run Saturday and Sunday.

Enjoy two days of model aircraft flying at its best and if you go along between 10am and 3pm, there’s the chance to meet and talk to the pilots.

Models to soar over weekend

Tom Leonard and his father Ian Leonard at the Fly-In event last year. File photo.

By Cathie BellMay 2016 was a month of two

very distinct halves, according to weather data collected by Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew.

The data is collected at a weather station in the Grovetown Business Park.

It shows the first half of May was very warm, similar to normal temperatures in late March or early April, Rob says.

But the second half of May was cold, with the average tempera-ture almost six degrees cooler than the first half.

Sunshine hours were almost exactly the long term average for May, with 167.8 hours recorded, enough to keep Blenheim at the top of the sunniest place rankings, above rivals Nelson, Tekapo, and Whakatane.

Rainfall for the month was 89.2mm, 141 per cent of the long-term average for May, and Rob says the soil moisture was being recharged with the above-average rainfall.

“With the top soil fully wet, ex-

cess moisture drains through the topsoil, and moisture lower in the soil profile is slowly recharged.”

May 2016 was a month of two dramatic halves with regard to temperature, Rob says.

The first half of May recorded a mean temperature of 15.5°; 4.4°C above average for May, and warmer than the average April temperature of 13.4°C, he says.

“At May 16, it looked like Blenheim was on track to record its warmest May for 84 years.”

However, the second half of May recorded a mean tempera-ture of 9.6°C, Rob says, which was 5.9°C cooler than the first half, and 1.5°C below average for May.

“Temperatures in the latter half of May were more akin to June temperatures, hence the cold temperatures came as a bit of a shock.”

May 2016 is now the fourth warmest on record with a mean of 12.6°C (1930-2016), he says.

May 2007 is the warmest with a mean temperature of 13.1°C.

Story and photo by Cathie BellLast year’s beach clean-up was

a success and twelve year-old Rarangi resident Zoe Luffman hopes that next weekend’s clean-up will be even ‘bigger and better’.

The Tuamarina School pupil has timed the clean-up to be held just after World Oceans Day on June 8.

The beach clean-up, from Mon-key Bay through to the Diversion, will take place on Saturday, June 12, from 10am until about 1pm, she says. People are invited to meet and register at the Rarangi Community Hall. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks pro-vided afterwards.

She is passionate about conser-vation and the environment, being a member of Conservation Kids Club Picton. This organization helps to educate children on the environment, local wildlife and what we can do to protect it today and in the future.

She has done beach clean-ups in Picton, around the Snout, and also with the Waikawa Dive Centre, and she was keen to bring the care closer to her home.

“I go walking along the beach quite often, and I see a lot of rub-bish unfortunately.

“I wanted to do something about it.”

Continued from Friday May 27

The only known way to kill club root zoospores in infected soil is by steam and this is an unlikely option.

There is no chemical treatment that I am aware of that will eradicate the disease.

It prefers acid soil so by liming the soil heavily with soft garden lime gives it a hard time.

In the past I have recommended using potassium permanganate (Condys crystals) as a soil drench to sterilize the soil in the planting area.

This meant dissolving three quarters of a teaspoon of Condys crystals into a litre of water along with 3 table spoons of salt.

Once dissolved add to another 9 litres of water and apply one litre to each planting hole prior to planting. This appears to sterilize the soil giving the seedling a good chance to establish, grow and hopefully reach maturity before the disease chokes off growth.

Planting quick maturing crops or planting crops after treating the soil in the early autumn can also work as the disease prefers a warm environment, not the cold soils of winter.

The problem with using Condys crystals is that it also destroy beneficial microbes and fungi.

Last week we talked about the new product Terracin which suppresses soil

pathogens and helps increase beneficial soil life.

This could be a very good answer for those that have club root.

About a month before planting your brassicas, drench the soil in the proposed planting area with Terracin as to the label instructions.

Ensure that the soil area treated extends a metre or more beyond where you will later plant your seedlings.

A good liming of the area would be advisable and keep the soil moist but do not use chlorinated water to do so. (It kills beneficial microbes).

Three weeks later, apply Mycorrcin (or Thatch Busta) to increase the beneficial

microbe populations.About a week later, plant your seedlings. The goal will be to surround the roots

of the plants with beneficial microbes and fungi so that the club root spores can not get on board.

I would be interested to hear from other gardeners about their results.

Planting any brassicas now other than the fast maturing Bok Choy is not practical.

Cut out this information for later use and remember to lime, use only natural foods, no chlorinated water or other chemicals.

America's love for Steven Adams

sports talk

Steven Adams is worth every penny of his new $20 million contract with the NBA’s Okla-homa City Thunder, according to American sporting pundits.

I have been fortunate enough to be in Las Vegas for the se-ries between the Thunder and defending champions Golden State Warriors and I can tell you the Americans rate the big Kiwi centre.

Even NBA legend Charles Barkley, an imposing big man during his time in the 1980s and 1990s, says he would have loved to have played with Adams, who is the brother of double Olympic gold medalist Valerie Adams.

The Americans love his physi-cality and presence under the hoop, as well as his uncompro-mising style and ability to get

under the skin of his competitors without being a dirty player.

While the Thunder blew a 3-1 series lead to lose a chance to make the NBA finals by losing the last three games, Adams lost no admirers.

The 22-year-old has made huge strides since he was selected 12th overall in the 2013 draft.

Many expected him to be in the developmental D-league for a few years before seeing any NBA action but Adams has proven the doubters wrong.

Not only is he OKC’s top centre, he’s performing like a quality NBA player and has the big money contract to prove it.

Not bad for a boy from Ro-torua.

When he entered the league he was seen as a good defender who

needed to work on his shooting. He has done that, having had

a few double-digit point games during the playoffs.

He’s also been a pugnacious rebounder and general menace.

Just ask Draymond Green who fouled Adams during the series by kicking him below the belt.

Adams has the potential to play for more than a decade in the top basketball league in the world, injuries and form provided.

The Americans can’t get enough of his Kiwi charm dur-ing interviews, his scraggy hair or dapper moustache.

The OKC Thunder have be-come New Zealand’s team and New Zealand has another sports star who is legitimately turning heads for all the right reasons in America.

Depressed returns for dairy farmers will have a detrimental effect on the NZ economy larger than many wish to acknowledge yet, Marlborough Federated Farmers dairy sec-tion chairman told the organisation’s AGM recently held at Renwick. “The current dairying downturn is putting huge stress on farm and families alike and those in the primary support business. It’s hard for us, we can’t support them,” he says. His advice to dairy farmers was to focus on positives. Communication with one’s spouse was vital.“While I know it’s important we make it to all these meetings like this AGM, I understand the difficulties we are all having balancing time on farm/off farm/work life balance with less or no staff. So for what it’s worth don’t sweat the small stuff attend what you can, do what you can but please remember to look after yourself and your team and celebrate the positives no matter how small they are”.Ironically only a year or two ago, the world wanted more milk, Fonterra wanted more milk and farmers were striving to maximise milk output. Events were beyond farmers’ control said Evan White. All that can be done was to minimise the effects and communicate with spouse or partner and advisers.“Don’t waste time worrying about the things

you can’t control but rather concentrate on the things within your control and remember there are approximately 10,000 other dairy farmers in exactly the same boat as yourself. Think about what is optimal for you, your farm and your cows. Maximum production is not necessarily maximum profit. So look after your business and be careful about deferring too many payments. Keep in touch with your bank manager, accountant and whatever other rural professionals you work with. If you can save a dollar do it,” he advises.Beef schedules had remained buoyant with cull cows making up to $1000 in some cases. “This should have a positive effect on the bobby calf market.”Evan White says it was important to consider and keep up to date and include animal wel-fare especially the new rules around bobby calf handling and transportation. It was also important to attend to “Health and Safety” with safety assessments by Work-Safe cur-rently taking place on farms. “On production, commendably the average hours worked per week now stands at 46. And dairy farmers had spent $1 billion protecting the environment by fencing off waterways, riparian planting, building bridges and upgrading effluent systems. A top effort.”
