Keywords

• Learning via insight – means that influence of motivations on selected perceptions and learning.

• Learning via insight also known as DISCOVERY LEARNING

• 3 stages of motivation:1. Enactive2. Iconic 3. Symbolics

Page 3: 3. Bruner

1. Enactive

• Things that we can manipulate physically.• Hands-on experiences

• One of action. The learner’s actions can be varied, but the uses of manipulatives are important here since they have to be able to touch, feel, move, etc. the object.

• Eg1. Heart. They dissect the heart.• Eg2. Fieldtrip itself.

Page 4: 3. Bruner

2. Iconic

• Pictures and visual aids• Memories from familiar experiences

• they can slowly imagine, they can now form images in their mind. visualization stage. The learners use images, drawings, and graphics to represent the concept being discovered.

• Eg1. Heart. Ask them to draw• Eg2. See the floral and fauna. Visualize the habitat of

swamp.

Page 5: 3. Bruner

Symbolic• Abstract concepts. That means you don’t need to handle them, or

having them represented concretely. Absence of enactive or iconic stage.

• ALL HAPPENS IN YOUR MIND!!!

• they begin to use representation (either symbols together with language) to represent their concepts which they understood. symbolic representation involves uses symbols, language (here is Bruner’s linguistic philosophy in practice), and logical statements to represent the abstract part of the concept being taught.

• Eg1. Heart. They try to symbolize their heart.• Eg2. Written report on comparison

IMPORTANT: LET THEM DISCOVER THEMSELVES!!!

NEVER TEACH THEORY CLASS BEFORE ACTIVITY

Page 7: 3. Bruner

Example of discovery learning

• EXPERIMENTS• Teacher ask problems, let them try to solve it

piece by piece. (learning by stages)

Page 8: 3. Bruner

• CONCERT VISUAL -- IT IS LIKE HIERARCHICAL, BUILDING THE CONCEPT. SPIRAL CURRICULUM

• HIS THEORY CAN APPLY TO OUR CURRICULUM, ALSO APPLIES TO OUR INDIVIDUAL LEARNING

• How does it relate in our curriculum?• Eg. Photosynthesis, • UPSR: leaves etc• PMR: Starch. . Do certain experiments in the presence of

starch.
