H e reached the Earth’s ‘three poles’ - trekking to the North and South poles and climbing Everest - in the quickest time in history. He’s also in the record books for the longest unsupported snow-kiting expedition in Arctic history. Most recently, Adrian Hayes, the UAE-based British adventurer, followed in the footsteps of Wilfred Thesiger by crossing the beautiful but brutal Empty Quarter with little more than basic provisions - and a camel. Unable to sit still for long though, the former British Army Gurkha Officer is about to attempt to tick off the next thing on his cast-iron bucket list - climbing K2. Unless you’re a seasoned mountaineer you might ask yourself; ‘He’s beat Everest, surely the planet’s second highest peak will present no issue?’ Well, it certainly will. “I think the numbers speak for themselves. Everest has now been summited some 5,000 times but K2 has been climbed 300 times,” says Adrian, who starts the challenge by flying to Pakistan on June 20. K2 is the crown of the Karakorum mountain range and straddles the border between Pakistan and China. Ominously dubbed the ‘savage mountain’ it’s arguably the hardest to climb in the world, with routes that are much steeper than Everest. The fatality rate for K2 far overshadows that of Everest with one in four losing their lives attempting to summit it - something Adrian is keeping in the back of his mind. “I’m well aware of it, and no one is going to be stupid. It is not a summit at all costs thing, it’s just a great challenge, a huge challenge. I’m galvanised by it, but safety is paramount,” he says. As a father of two, Adrian the adventurer always has to square the risks involved with Adrian the parent: “I’ve got two lovely kids and yes it is the biggest thing that makes you think and of course it affects me.” He has years of experience he can draw on with recent weeks spent training in Nepal and an ability to carry on under the most dire of circumstances. Still, on K2, success can be down to chance. “The biggest challenge on K2 is the weather. It is a lot further north in the Himalayan range than Everest and the weather is notoriously difficult... there are dangers of avalanche and rock falls, which are not as prevalent on Everest.” Adrian admits to suffering from altitude sickness but says he’s in peak physical condition for the challenge. In fact, even after all of his expeditions, he’s still learning more about his physical capabilites. “Interestingly, I used this new breathing technique and muscle activation last month in Nepal,” he says. “As a result it was the least I have ever had altitude sickness. It was a muscle activation course through MEFITPRO, one of my sponsors, with an amazing guy called Douglas Heel. I was filling my lungs with far more air than before by activating my diaphragm more efficiently. It includes vigorous rubbing techniques and pressure points. It’s painful stuff, but you’re firing up muscles.” Having left a top executive job at Airbus for a life of adventure, Adrian has not looked back. His life may not be for everyone but he says we should all take the time to consider if we are following the right path. “Get in touch with your own personal values. I am driven by achievement but I am driven by big goals, teams, nature, sport, health and fitness, so what I am doing now is ticking all of those boxes.” [email protected] Dubai adventurer is ready for what might be his toughest challenge yet Follow Adrian’s K2 attempt at Facebook.com/adrianmhayes and www.adrianhayes.com Picking his battles GET TO GRIPS WITH THE SAVAGE MOUNTAIN >> K2 is the world’s second highest peak at 8,611 metres >> It is locally known as ‘Chogo Ri’ which means ‘The Great Mountain’ >> The first attempt to reach the summit was made by an Anglo-Swiss expedition in 1902 that ascended to 5,670 metres >> Italians Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli were the first to reach the summit on July 31, 1954.
