A Boy Scout In Our Community named Sam Jacobs has begun work on his Eagle Scout project. Sam's project, Collect and Build for Christian Neighbors is a two part project. The collecting portion of the pro-ject involves challenging local churches to collect food donations for our local Food Pantry and Helping Agency, Christian Neighbors. The challenge and collection begins Sunday, March 1 and will continue through the 5 Sundays in March. I am ask-ing your assistance of the entire commu-nity to help Sam complete his project by collecting food donations throughout the month of March. The second part of Sam's project will be the construction of an out-door food donation collection box with his Scout Troop at Christian Neighbors. I ran across a story that disturbed me. Achurch, not known to me, wanted to improveattendance at their main worship service. Sothey hired a well-known advertising agency tocome, study their situation and make theirrecommendations.The ad agency did their research and then

suggested to the church that they should get ridof all the crosses in the church because thecrosses might send a negative message toprospective young worshippers!Christianity without a cross is not

Christianity.Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr was way ahead

of his time when he described what futuregenerations would look for in religion.“This is a view that insists on a God without

wrath bringing men and women without sin intoa kingdom without judgment through a Christwithout a cross”Jewish law said, “He that is hanged is

accursed of God” (Deuteronomy 21:23). To theJews, the idea of the cross was a stumblingblock. To the Greeks (also known as Gentiles),the idea of a man dying on a cross wasconsidered foolishness (I Corinthians l: 23). To the contrary, Apostle Paul (a well-known

leader in the early church) preached “Christcrucified...”Without the cross, there is no resurrection.

Without the resurrection, there is no salvation –no hope for eternity.The cross is more than an adorning piece of

church furniture. To all who believe, it is thepower of God for salvation!
