    Where/When He Ruled

    - Louis XIII became the king of France in 1610

    - He was the son ofHenri IV and became king after his father'sassassination in 1610

    - Since Louis XIII became king at the age of nine, he was still aminor. France was governed by a Regent in this case, hismother Marie de Medici.

    - Louis ended his reign in 1643

    Economy and trade

    Louis's attainment to the throne corresponded with a short-runtrend, in the faltering post-sixteen-century economy, which castits shadow across his reign, adding to the traditional problemsof an economy not far removed from medieval subsistence.

    The French entered an Atlantic slave trade that had beenestablished and dominated by the Iberians. It was a frenchcaptain who may have been one of the first to make a triangularvoyage around the atlantic.

    In 1642 Louis athourized the trade, expressing his wish thatenslavement would save the souls of africans.

    colonization and expansion

    Louis attempted to stem the flow ofHuguenot (French Protestant)expansion. The counter Reformation had made an impact in France andin the early days of the reign ofLouis, the Huguenots developed adefensive mentality. This was because the regency was dominated bythe motherofLouis, Marie de Medici.

    Thomas Hobbes outlined his ideas in a work titled Leviathan. In it, heargued that people were naturally cruel, greedy, and selfish. If not strictlycontrolled, they would fight, rob, and oppress one another.

    Religion

    The powerof the monarchy was weakened during the FrenchWars of Religion and Louis wanted to build on the increase inmonarchical power that his father, Henry, had introduced oncethe war had ended.

    Louis was a mass of contradictions, He came across asmodest and reserved but he could be very cruel and ruthless.

    As the murderof Concini indicated. He was a very religiousman who sanctioned murder. He was also a hypochondriac

    who always believed that he was ill yet he enjoyed leading hissoldiers into battle.

    Domestic problems

    In the kingdom under King Louis XIII many of the people hadto work in the field for little pay and very poorly madehouses. Much of the time King Louis didn't care about hisfarmers only about the rich people. He was also making peoplefight the Thirty Years War that didn't knowhow to fight.

    Foreign problems

    During his rule the Thirty Years War was taking place inmuch of Spain and Austria. King Louis rejected the policyfor supporting the Protestant States. France declared waron Spain in 1635 and was victorious by the time of death of

    Richelieu in 1642.
