Welcome to the HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre
It is our pleasure to introduce you to the HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre. We specialise in
helicopter flight training from our facilities at Hangar 6, Rand Airport, and offer students professional
flight training at competitive, market-related rates.
Current legislation dictates a MINIMUM OF FIFTY (50) flying instruction hours for the issuing of a
Private Pilot Licence (PPL). This figure might, however, be more based on individual progress.
Legislation furthermore requires that 25 hours must be dual instruction (i.e. with an instructor) and at
least 15 hours solo flying, of which at least 5 hours must be cross-country flying time. Students must
hold a Student Pilot Licence (SPL) before flying solo, for which the following is required:
x An official notification of a passed flight medical examination;
x Sufficient flying instruction experience as determined by the Chief Flying Instructor (minimum 15
hours);
x Passed the required Technical- and Pre-solo Exams; and
x Completed Part 61 paperwork formalities as required by the South African Civil Aviation Authority
(CAA).
The HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre has access to a list of designated Flight Medical Examiners
(FME). Booking is essential and should be made in advance with the FME. Our advice to new students
is to complete the medical examination before commencing flight training, although it is not a legal
requirement.
Once enrolled at the HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre, a file containing all the student’s details will
be kept for immediate reference. Included in this file will be a record of all flying and ground school
experience, as well as personal details for official purposes only.
All training is scheduled around the students’ requirements. The ground school and flying instruction
takes place concurrently, according to a Flight Training Syllabus. It is important for students to adhere
to this syllabus, especially during the first 15 hours of ab-initio instruction. The cost of the ground
lectures is included in the flying training component and is structured to equip the prospective student
with sufficient reference material to obtain the required level of knowledge.
Typical course duration, should you be able to attend three times a week, is approximately four
months. It is however possible to obtain your PPL within five to six weeks on a full-time basis. Pilots
holding an aeroplane licence or other flying experience should be able to accelerate their progress.
It is important to note that in all cases the flying period includes a ground lecture period of
approximately 30 minutes. Students should therefore plan on a session of approximately 2 hours for
each flying hour. A 24-hour notice period is required from students should they not be able to attend
a booked flying lesson. A late cancellation fee of R1,000.00 (excl. VAT) will be payable if a booking is
cancelled within the stipulated 24-hour period or a "no-show" situation arises.
All students are advised that payment for any form of training is strictly COD. The ideal situation is for
a credit amount of R10,000 to be left with the HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre in advance, which is
then constantly topped up in order to ensure a credit balance at all times.
In addition to the above, students would need to complete a Restricted Radio Licence. This is
conducted at the HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre and forms an integral part of the entire syllabus.
The requisite final PPL(H) exams are conducted at HENLEY AIR under the direct auspices of the SA
CAA.
Owners wishing to train on their own aircraft are most welcome, although certain provisions will
apply. Students furthermore have the option of including a turbine helicopter conversion on the Bell
JetRanger into the initial flight-training syllabus.
Please contact André Coetzee or Ina Ras (Flight School Administrator) for more information. We look
forward to seeing you onboard with the HENLEY AIR Flight Training Centre soon.
