Time of Confession Invitation to Confession Prayer of Confession

Eternal God, we confess that there are times in our lives when we do not sense your nearness. We laugh as your Spirit intercedes and question your timing. Remind us that you are with us, always. Press us to share the hope and joy of your love so that we might faithfully witness to your grace in all things. We await the change you have in store for us. Help us to be as you would have us be. For all these spoken confessions and for all the unspoken burdens of our heart, O God, we seek your forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Lord, hear our confessions and those we offer in the silence….. Dear Congregation,

Summer is here. It is often a time of respite and relaxation. A time to enjoy the sunshine, to wade in the pool, to play with children on summer break, to garden, to go swimming at the lake, or get away on a much-needed vacation. In the life of the church, Summer also means that we enter ordinary time in the liturgical cycle. The great 50 days of Easter has ended with Pentecost, followed by Trinity Sunday. Thus, clergy across the country, put away their white stoles of Eastertide and the Red stoles of Pentecost as they get their green stoles ready. The paraments on the lectern and pulpit are also changed to match. Perhaps you haven’t noticed it before, or perhaps you have, but we wear green for a very long time. This is because “Ordinary Time” occupies more than one-half of the liturgical year! Please don’t think ordinary as mundane. During this ordinary time, God’s saving acts are not recounted in the same fanfare of Christmas or Easter celebrations. They are still to be celebrated and reflected upon. This rhythm in the church cycle becomes more about the quiet evidences of God’s presence. A time when we recount the old stories of the Bible and let our attentions be grabbed by the fact of how God’s grace is ever unfolding. In the book, Calendar: Christ’s Time for the Church, author Laurence Hull Stookley sums it up this way:

“Suffice it to say that in Ordinary Time we should be particularly aware of, and thankful for, the work of God in our midst on every sort of occasion. The God who is made known in the obvious events surrounding the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is no less made known in transforming power in every human experience common to humanity. However, because of human frailty, we may not be inclined to recognize God’s action in our midst day to day. We will, therefore, need to ask that our eyes be opened more fully to all the evidences of God’s grace that are presented to us.”

As we approach today’s text, note that Sarah laughs when presented with the unexpected evidence of God’s grace presented for her and Abraham. I, myself, certainly understand her laughing at the notion that in her old age she will bear a child. It would be mind-boggling. I think there are many times in our lives when we cannot imagine what God can do. I think there are many times when God ushers in blessings in our lives – in seen and unseen ways, in the ordinary and extraordinary moments, and we laugh in a very human way of response; maybe in doubt, or disbelief, or in awe, or utter shock. Sometimes it takes hindsight to see how God, was and is, at work in our lives.

Ordinary Time gives us an opportunity to be refreshed in the stories that testify that God is steadfast to keep covenant and simultaneously proclaim that God unfurls many blessings that go beyond our expectations and imaginations. This Summer, as we venture into Ordinary Time, pay attention and look for the many ways that God’s grace is presented to us. Carve out a moment this week to consider, “What evidences of God’s grace are being presented to you and how have you responded to those graces?” Remember that Sarah did not only laugh, but she later gave this response in Genesis 21:6, when she said, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” Like Sarah, how will you proclaim God’s nearness and blessing the next time that we have been prone to question God’s timing? Will we, like Sarah after our laughter or confusion fades, faithfully witness to God’s grace in all things? May this Summer be a time to consider, reflect, and deeply ponder all the evidences of God’s grace that are presented to us.

In God’s Love,

Rev. Michelle JunkinAssociate Pastor for Congregational Care
