JOURNAL: The Powers and Perils of Intuition

Have you ever had a moment where you felt as though something wasn't right? Perhaps

stepping into a parking lot late at night, or feeling negative around someone without

knowing why? And if you've experienced this before, have you shrugged it off,

dismissing it as illogical nonsense? I think everyone will experience it. Our lecturer

taught us about the powers and perils of intuition during the class. It’s like a process that

gives us the ability to know something directly without analytic reasoning, bridging the

gap between the conscious and no conscious parts of our mind, and also between instinct

and reason which is what we called intuition.

The conscious is an expert at logic and will use it relentlessly. Conversely, the

unconscious mind searches through the past, present, and future and connects with

hunches and feelings in a nonlinear way. Its process is cryptic to the logical mind, as it

defies the conventional laws of time and space.

JOURNAL: Conformity

Last week, our psychology lecturer taught us about conformity. What is Conformity?

Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order

to fit in with a group. This change is in response to real (involving the physical presence

of others) or imagined (involving the pressure of social norms / expectations) group

pressure.

Conformity can also be simply defined as “yielding to group pressures” (Crutchfield,

1955). Group pressure may take different forms, for example bullying, persuasion,

teasing, and criticism as examples. Conformity is also known as majority influence (or

group pressure). The term conformity is often used to indicate an agreement to the

majority position, brought about either by a desire to ‘fit in’ or be liked (normative) or

because of a desire to be correct (informational), or simply to conform to a social role

(identification).

During the class, Kelvin went out to toilet. So, our lecturer used him as an experiment to

show us the meaning of conformity. When Kevin was out to toilet, our lecturer gave us a

slide showing one specific line that has one same line and two different lines with it. She

told us to choose a different line when Kevin comes into the class but the lecturer want

Kevin to choose the right one that matches the specific to observe whether he will follow

our wrong answer or strongly stands his own answer. Lastly, Kevin followed our answer

with doubt. He wasn’t sure about his answer because all of us gave the wrong answer, so

he just follows us. This has showed the existence of conformity. He felt the pressure to

agree or disagree to the group.

After that, we have learnt about behavior in groups will influence other people. Our

lecturer showed us about a video where a girl act like she’s being kidnap and see who

will save her, through the video we can see the cruelness of real life because only 3

people go and saved her after acting being kidnap for long hours. Then, we have

thebenefits of groups. The meaning of group is a number of people or things are together

or in the same place. The benefit of group is we can solve a problem faster and effective

because we work together as a team.
