The Road Not Taken
There are dozens of poems to set to music, to use for programme music, or to study word rhythm with.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.

Composing a Bebop Melody
Read through this worksheet and then try constructing your own melody on the Sibelius Melody Template.
STAGE 1
Play through the following broken chords. Improvise melodic patterns using the notes of each chord. This is called chord tone improvisation. Start by focusing on just one chord. When you are confident try stringing one chord after the other. Try playing patterns over several octaves. Aim to make your improvisations ‘singable’ - this is the sign of a good tune.

Try composing a melody for the first four bars of the song. At this stage, limit yourself to chord tones only. Notice in the example below that the starting note of each new chord is always very close to the last note of the previous chord - this creates a smooth transition through the chord sequence
