Blueprint for Hydropower Assessment in
Latin America USGS/EROS in cooperation with
Department of Energy Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory developed a small-hydropower assessment atlas in 2006
Adapted methodology for hydro power assessments in Latin America – using 30-meter data - was used for Sao Paulo State study
São Paulo State Hydropower Assessment:
Basic facts
Non-reimbursable funding for the
study was provided by CAF.
the assessment was completed for
all the streams located wholly
within São Paulo State,
using a Digital Elevation Model
(DEM) with 30-meter resolution,
in combination with an
hydrography data layer supplied
by ANA,
with the cooperation of the Sao
Paulo Energy Secretariat.
Stream Segments Where Hydropower
Assessment Was Completed
Over 152,000

Complete a feasibility study in Sao Paulo State to identify
project areas where hydro power potential can be
harnessed and produce detailed project profiles for
developers.
Complete a similar type of study in Peru (on-going)
Initiate similar studies in other Latin American countries,
regions or provinces (the SRTM 30-meter dataset is
available for all the region)
