Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Community

Last Friday it was White Ribbon Day and at Tuesday’s assembly I spoke to all students about the White Ribbon initiative, a male led campaign to end men’s violence against women and the vision of White Ribbon Initiative that all women live in safety free from all forms of men’s violence.

The statistics for domestic violence in Australia are confronting; 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 children experience domestic violence. We watched a Behind The News story on domestic violence and what it is and the forms it takes. I spoke to the assembly about what they can do as they grow into adults in relation trying to rid Australia of the scourge of domestic violence. To finish we watched the White Ribbon Day 2016 video in which a variety of Australian men answer the question:

Who will you stand up, speak out and act for in relation to domestic violence? https://www.whiteribbon.org.au/

I encourage all of the NHHS community to click on the link above, watch the video and answer the question.

As always please contact me at the school if you have any issues in regards to your child’s education.

Highlight of the fortnight:

The positive feedback I have had from a number of employers over the last two weeks in regards to our Year 10 students

who are on work experience. Congratulations to all students who have taken this opportunity to put themselves into the

work force in a variety of jobs and occupations. As you head into Year 11 it is a great chance to further solidify your

thoughts about where your career post-school may lie.

Wellbeing for Schools

Calendar

Monique Buggy (Bachelor of Social Work, UNE) has been working with students at NHHS over the past two terms. She has

compiled a Pinterest Board to promote wellbeing for

students. This board is filled with information on:

relationships, coping tools, self esteem, anger and

other feelings, LGBTI, social media and mindfulness.

It is also a resource list for contacts for Kids helpline,

Headspace and Beyond Blue - all anonymous and

confidential access lines. Jump on and have a quick

look or a longer look. The board can be accessed by

going to the following link:

schools/ or through the Library catalogue searching

with keywords which are listed on the poster.

Last Friday a group of 20 Nambucca Heads High School students represented the school at an event that celebrated the local

community, schools and businesses. The Bowraville Memorial Cup and Youth Expo Day is an opportunity for the local people

to come together to commemorate the tragic loss of three local youths, alongside supporting current young people in

developing skills in employment, cultural activities and communication with careers services.

Nambucca students particularly enjoyed Defence Force talks, a performance by a local singer, and a range of stalls that

provided the students with Aboriginal art practices such as painting and earth installations. Students received gift packs from

stalls to support their education and connections with employment services. The day concluded with a demonstration by the

local Fire Department in which they used the 'jaws of life' to open the door of a car to show how they are able to work together

to save lives in high pressure

circumstances.

Although the weather at

Bowraville was very hot,

students embraced the day as

a learning opportunity and a

chance to collaborate and have

fun with others in their

community.
