9:00AM – 12:00PM • WORKSHOP A

DELIVERING EFFECTIVE MENTORING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT RISKMentoring from a positive role model provides a nurturing pathway for teenagers to feel supported especially at times when they are at risk of disengaging and are unable to talk to other significant adults in their lives. This workshop considers the power of mentorship in helping young people deal with ongoing challenges while staying engaged in work and education and the community. It looks at the skills and capabilities for mentoring young people at different stages.

• Considering the theory and evidence base for mentoring• Examining the good principles for effective practice• Types and contexts for mentoring and the contexts – traditional, group, peer,

team and e-mentoring• Clarifying the focus, roles and relationships within the process• Exploring diverse risks and challenges and strategies for effective mentorship• Focusing on outcomes for young people – reducing risk, enhancing self

esteem and resilience, setting goals and enabling participation and opportunity

1:00PM – 4:00PM • WORKSHOP B

ENABLING PATHWAYS AND BUILDING CAPABILITIES THROUGH PROJECT BASED LEARNINGThe effectiveness of pathways to the workforce for young people is greatly enhanced when learning is project based. It encourages young people to investigate, understand, collaborate, problem solve and respond to complex questions in particular areas of interest to deliver active and meaningful learning. Beyond the particular technological and theoretical skills, such learning enables general capabilities for young people entering the workforce. This workshop considers how pathways can be strengthened through project based learning. Participants look at how cross sector collaboration between schools, community agencies and industry can deliver meaningful pathways.

• Designing programs to create aligned, resilient and flexible young people through authentic, project-based learning

• Closing legitimate gaps in both skills and knowledge and between generations• How to connect, relate, adapt and tap into and utilise their innate skills and creativity• Fostering of creativity, design thinking, entrepreneurship and innovation• Developing active collaborations with business and industry
