The combination of Simmental and Angus genetics continues togain industry wide acceptance. Both breeds are committed tousing science to select for traits that affect the commercial cattlemen. Along with Simmental and Angus genetics, a number of these bulls have one-eighth to three-eighths Brahman influence.It is no secret that Brahman-influenced cattle thrive in hot, humidenvironments. If you retain replacement females for your herd, youshould consider our selection of SimAngus™ HT and Simbrahbulls. This is the largest offering in the country of performancetested SimAngusTM HT and Simbrah bulls.

Bull development took place at Tom Brothers Ranch in lots largeenough to allow the bulls adequate space for exercise. The bullswere continuously evaluated for performance and disposition. A nutritionist was consulted to create rations that achieve gainwithout sacrificing rumen health and foot soundness. All bulls havepassed a breeding soundness exam and are ready to work.

RETAINED SEMEN INTERESTBuyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value and ½semen interest of any bull purchased in this sale while respectiveowner will retain ½ semen interest. This semen interest entitlesBrush Country Bulls owners to ½ of the revenue of any semen sold.If a bull is sold to a third party, Brush Country Bulls owners’ interestremains and it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure semen interestis upheld if semen is ever sold. Brush Country Bull owners will notbe responsible for expenses related to semen collection of any bullpurchased unless a mutual agreement is reached for expenses priorto semen collection. Brush Country Bull owners retained semen in-terest includes the right to collect semen on purchased bulls at theowners expense and the buyer’s convenience.

BRUSH COUNTRY GUARANTEEEvery bull is guaranteed to be sound on sale day and has passed abreeding soundness exam performed within 30 days of the sale.Every bull selling carries a 100% guarantee for one breeding season,provided the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritionaland physical health, not to exceed 120 days beyond sale day. In theevent a customer has a problem with a bull (health, injury or death)prior to or during the bull’s first breeding season, the customershould immediately contact a Brush Country Bulls representative toreport a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem will be re-quired and Brush Country Bulls reserves the right to have the bull returned if deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreedupon quality will be provided if Brush Country Bulls has one avail-able with delivery distance to the customer not to exceed the 150mile free delivery. SIMMENTAL $ INDEXESThough EPDs allow from the comparison of genetic levels from manyeconomically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economicpuzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in – blending EPDs and economicsto estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The sametechnology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry anddairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop thefollowing $ indexes.All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cowherd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained, andthe remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cowswith all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

WHAT IS A SIMANGUSTM AND A SIMANGUSTM HTThe American Simmental Association (ASA) recently added the designationof SimAngusTM HT (Heat Tolerant) to their promotion. SimAngusTM HT isa SimAngusTM with at least 1/8 Brahman.A SimAngusTM, to be exact, must have at least 1/4 Angus and 1/4 Sim-mental and the combination of the two needs to add to 3/4 or more.To get the SimAngusTM designated to HT, the animal must possess atleast 1/8 Brahman blood.

It predicts the average differencein ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred tofirst-calf heifers.Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of asire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared tothat of other sires.Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictorof a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny com-pared to that of other sires.Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor ofa sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny com-pared to that of other sires.Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds perday, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gainin future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a con-stant amount of feed consumed.Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire's ability totransmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that ofother sires.Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is apredictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal sizecompared to that of other sires.Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle tem-perament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. Itpredicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparisonwith another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problemsare not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

MATERNAL EPDsCalving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in per-centage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greatercalving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average easewith which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers whencompared to daughters of other sires.Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire's genetic meritfor milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters com-pared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part ofa calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow peryear, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an ex-pected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger valueis more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars savedon feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $ENsavings difference include lactation energy requirements and en-ergy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS EPDsCarcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor ofthe differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny com-pared to progeny of other sires.Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference inUSDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny ofother sires.Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictorof the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared toprogeny of other sires.Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor ofthe differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as meas-ured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny com-pared to progeny of other sires.Group/progeny (Carc Grp/ Pg and Usnd Grp/Pg) reflects the num-ber of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultra-sound progeny included in the analysis.

$VALUE INDEXES$Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollarsper head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic se-lection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progenyof each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to prog-eny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly matedto cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars perhead, is the expected average difference in future progeny per-formance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue andcost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight,weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head,is the expected average difference in future progeny performancefor postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, isthe expected average difference in future progeny performance forcarcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.Quality Grade ($QG) $QG represents the quality grade segment ofthe economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the spe-cialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving qual-ity grade. Developmental Duplication (DD)DD is an abnormality that has long been recognized in Angus cattle. It is simple recessive in its inheritance and very few affected animals have ever been seen in the industry. Thereare a significant number of cattle that show no symptoms or negative affects even in the homozygous state. To assist you with your selection decisions, we have listed all testedand potential carriers for DD. DD has only been found in cattle of Angus origin. DDC bulls can be used on cows that do not have Angus in them with no problem. Bulls that are not listed are animals that do nothave carriers in their pedigree.Genetic conditions are believed to be found in all animals. With enhanced DNA technology scientists are able to identify more and more of these conditions. With this informationwe can make better breeding decisions. Working together is essential to success, especially in the harsh, dry climate of the Brush Country in south Texas.Located about an hour south of San Antonio, just off Interstate 37 near Campbellton, the historic Tom BrothersRanch is the home to the Brush Country Bull development and sale.

“Our family began ranching here in 1857, but started in theseedstock business here in the late 1950’s. We are extremelyexcited about the opportunity to restart the program with thehelp of so many other experienced breeders,” says Ellen Tomof Tom Brothers.

Ellen represents the 6th generation of family to operate theranch and along with her uncle, Philip Tom manage the cows,feedlot, hunting and other enterprises on the ranch. In totalthere are six breeders cooperating to populate the bull devel-opment center and offer a seedstock package with optionsdesigned specifically for the needs of producers in the area.

The “dean” of breeders involved in the group is Sally Buxkemper owner of RX Simbrah, Ballinger Texas. Having beenin the seedstock business herself for 50 years, she was a pioneer in the use of Brahman genetics and one of theoriginal developers of the American Simbrah. Today Sallystill produces heat adapted seedstock using Simmentalin combination with red and black Angus. By focusing oneconomically important trait improvement, retained heterosis and cows that thrive in southern climates, Sallyand RX Simbrah have maintained a leadership position inthe genetics business. Sally was a 2011 inductee into theCowgirl Hall of Fame by the American Quarter Horse Association for her years of service to the ranching business in this country.

You’ll find Premier Beef and the Brad Leen family ranch in Southeast Texas between Austin and College Station nearthe town of Thrall. The Bermuda pastures mixed with patches ofgood farmland make this great country for cattle and agricultureproduction. “We chose this part of the country because of theopportunity for our family business and the potential to make andimpact in the beef industry here in Texas”, said Brad. “The Simmentalbusiness was incredibly successful here back in the 80’s, but wastoo slow to make practical change. Today we offer a much improvedproduct with great calving ease, solid color and do-ability in additionto the growth and muscle customers expect”. Brad and his familyoperate their SimAngus based seedstock operation with their customer’s needs placed in the forefront.

For Ford’s Double S Ranch at Thrall, Texas a positive change camein the late 90’s when Tom and Sandy Ford made the move to blackSimmental genetics in response to a changing beef business. Withthe return to the ranch of Dustin Ford and his wife Heidi after graduatingfrom Tarleton State University, infusions of new cattle and ideascame together to help shape the operation that is today. Accordingto Dustin, “Since that time, we’ve added SimAngus to our purebredprogram and have set significant genetic focus on carcass valuetraits in addition to providing the problem free maternal geneticsthat our customer’s need to be successful.” Dustin and Heidihave two sons Justin and Cameron.

The ranch is owned by Tom and Sandy Ford. With more than 30years experience in the restaurant industry in addition to the seed-stock business, The Ford’s bring a wealth of understanding as to how the beef supply chain functions and howcrucial starting with high value genetics is to the profitability of the entire system. Tom started his career with SirloinStockade corp. and is now the owner/C.E.O. of the company. Sirloin Stockade owns/operates three differentrestaurant concepts, Sirloin Stockade, Montana Mike's and Coyote Canyon.

Filegonia Cattle Co. is located in central Texas near Troy. Owned and operatedby Joe and Beth Mercer, the operation strives to breed and improve a heatadapted combination of Simmental with Red Angus genetics, for more than 20years. “This combination really works for our customers. Whether it is in thetraditional 5/8, 3/8 combination of purebred Simbrah, of an updated percentagebased on functionality and value, these cattle now offer a great combination ofmaternal, longevity traits and terminal value,” says Beth.

DA Cattle is committed to producing Angus cattle that are proven performersfor cattlemen in Texas. DA Cattle is owned by Charlie Murray and PaulAelvoet and located in D'Hanis, Texas. DA Cattle's Angus herd is raised anddeveloped under the harsh conditions associated with south Texas. Breedleading Angus genetics are selected to produce cattle for top performanceand eye appeal, not just EPDs. DA Cattle's goal is to produce cattle that areuniform, fertile, and loaded with economically important production traits.

The 2nd Annual Brush Country Bull Sale is scheduled for December 14, 2013. Every one of the participants hasbeen in the seedstock business for more than 20 years. “Together we think we can provide the genetics peopleneed regardless of the part of the country these bulls end up”, says Brad Leen of Premier Genetics.

According to Beth Mercer, “The bulk of the bulls we offer will feature a percentage of Brahman genetics to fit thematernal needs of the region, but our SimAngus bull offering is designed to add value to the heat adapted geneticsthat already dominate the cow herd in this region”.
