Airbag System

Questions and AnswersAbout Airbags andSpecialty LawEnforcement VehiclesQ: Can equipment such as radar

devices, video cameras, andradio trees be mounted in aspecialty vehicle equippedwith a right front passengerfrontal airbag?

A: Yes, but care must be taken toproperly mount the equipmentoutside of the airbag“deployment zone.”

Q: What is the airbag“deployment zone”?

A: The term “deployment zone”describes the space an airbagtakes up when fully inflated.Airbags need room to workproperly, and anything in the“deployment zone” — suchas improperly mountedequipment — can greatly affectthe performance of the airbag.

{ Warning

Airbags inflate with great force, faster than the blink of an eye. Noobjects, such as shotguns, shouldbe placed over or near the airbagcovers. Equipment mounted tooclose to an inflating airbag couldprevent the airbag from operatingproperly to protect the occupantsor could be forced into anoccupant or break and become adangerous projectile, causingsevere injury or even death. Tohelp prevent injury and to allowthe airbag to perform as it wasdesigned, do not mountequipment inside the airbagdeployment zones.

Q: How can I identify the airbag“deployment zone” in myvehicle?

A: See Airbag DeploymentDiagrams 0 10 for moreinformation. The diagramsprovide the approximatedimensions of the “deploymentzones” for your specialty vehicle. Before doing any service work, including the installation of anyequipment, consult theappropriate service manual.

Q: Is it possible to shieldequipment so it does notinterfere with airbagdeployment?

A: While shielding may protectcertain equipment from beingdamaged or dislodged, it mayalso negatively affect how anairbag inflates. Therefore, wecannot recommend theplacement of any equipment inthe deployment zone, evenwhen shielding.

Q: Can the installation of pushbumpers on the front end ofthe vehicle affect thedeployment of the airbag?

A: It is not likely that installing pushbumpers will affect sensing forthe airbag as long as the vehiclestructure itself is not modified. On pickup models, push bumperstyles with vertical pushingmembers that are in fore-aftalignment with the front airbagsensors are not recommended.GM is not aware of any adversedefects from the many pushbumpers that have beeninstalled on current model GMpolice vehicles with airbags.

See “Adding Equipment to theAirbag-Equipped Vehicle” in theowner manual for more information.

Driving Information

Vehicle Load LimitsThe information in this section of thesupplement is for those who intendto install additional equipment to thepolice vehicle after it has left thefactory, and for those who will bedriving and loading the vehicle withpassengers and/or cargo.

Two labels on your vehicle showhow much weight it was designed tocarry, the Tire and LoadingInformation label and theCertification/Tire label. These labelsare attached to your vehicle andgive you the maximum loadcapacity, the Gross Vehicle WeightRating (GVWR) and the Gross AxleWeight Rating (GAWR) for yourvehicle. See “Vehicle Load Limits” inthe owner manual for additionalloading information.

The following guidelines can helpyou with proper loading and loaddistribution when installingadditional equipment on the TahoePolice Package and Tahoe andSilverado Special ServicePackages.

{ Warning

Do not load the vehicle anyheavier than the GrossVehicle Weight Rating(GVWR), or either themaximum front or rear GrossAxle Weight Rating (GAWR).This can cause systems tobreak and change the way thevehicle handles. This couldcause loss of control and acrash. Overloading can alsoreduce stopping distance, damage the tires, and shortenthe life of the vehicle.

Adding Equipment to YourVehicle

Before adding accessories orequipment to your police vehicle, there are some things you needto know:

. The police vehicle's maximumcapacity weight.

. The weight of your policevehicle, including a full tank offuel but without a driver andpassengers.

. The weight of items you plan onadding to your police vehicle, like roof mounted light bar(s),push bumpers, securitybarrier(s), rear storageorganizer, highway flares, fireextinguishers, weapons, ammunition, radios, and videoequipment.

. The weight and number ofpassengers you intend to carryin your vehicle.

. The total weight of anyadditional cargo you intend tocarry in your vehicle.

When planning your vehicleequipment installation, remembernot to exceed the Gross VehicleWeight Rating (GVWR) or the GrossAxle Weight Rating (GAWR) of thefront or rear axles. To keep theavailable load weight less than thevehicle capacity weight, you mayneed to limit the number ofpassengers you carry in yourvehicle or change your choice ofadditional equipment.

Center of Gravity (CG)

A vehicle's center of gravity is animaginary location inside the vehicleand is a balance point for thevehicle mass as it moves down theroad. The police vehicle's center ofgravity, before you add a load andpassengers, is approximatelymidway between the center of theaxles, up from the ground to justbelow the front window, andbetween the driver and passenger.

Equipment location and weight onthe vehicle's center of gravity isimportant to keep in mind whenplanning an installation. Heavyequipment should be positioned as

low and as far forward in the rearload compartment as possible. Tryto mount the equipment below thebottom of the side windows. Referto the Loading Zone chart anddiagram to help with yourinstallation plan.

A procedure to make the necessarymeasurements and formulas tocalculate the vehicle longitudinal, lateral, and vertical position of thecenter of gravity can be found in theGM Coachbuilders Manual.Equipment required to conduct themeasurements for calculating thecenter of gravity are:

. Weight scales of sufficientcapacity to measure the vehicleweight at each wheel.

. A post-type hoist or other meansto safely elevate the front of thevehicle to at least an angle of20 degrees above horizontal.

See your GM dealer to get moreinformation about this coachbuilderprocedure.

26 Driving and Operating

Keeping the center of gravitymidway between the axles is alsoimportant to provide proper brakingperformance. About half the totalvehicle weight on each axle isrecommended.

Weigh your vehicle after theadditional equipment has beeninstalled to determine the actualweight of your vehicle. Weigh thevehicle with a full tank of fuel andwithout passengers. You may needto put a limit on how many people orother equipment you can carryinside your vehicle after theadditional equipment has beeninstalled.

Towing

Trailer TowingFor more information, see “TrailerTowing” in the owner manual.

Weight of the Trailer

How heavy can a trailer safely be?

It depends on how the rig is used. For example, speed, altitude, roadgrades, outside temperature andhow much the vehicle is used to pulla trailer are all important. It candepend on any special equipmenton the vehicle, and the amount oftongue weight the vehicle can carry.

Maximum trailer weight is calculatedassuming only the driver is in thetow vehicle and it has all therequired trailering equipment. The weight of additional optionalequipment, passengers, andcargo in the tow vehicle must besubtracted from the maximum trailerweight.
