    Queen Elizabeth I ruled over England from November 17,1558 until her death in 1603.

    The Queen was a fairly popular ruler. She had a certaincharm about her and knew how to talk to people in order togain their affection.

    Economy and Trade

    In about 50 years, England's population rose by over amillion. The increase in population meant there was an increase in

    the demand of food. As a result the price of food rose by75% and the prices of manufactured goods increased by

    45%. The government tried to preserve it's social stability but

    there was no success. The Justices of the Peace tried to fix the peoples wages.

    However, there was little to no effect on the poverty or

    vagrancy. There were many new laws passed that tried to help with

    societys bad economy.

    Colonization and Expansion

    In the late 1500s, Queen Elizabeth I accorded Sir WalterRaleigh permission to create colonies in North America.

    The claimed land was called Virginia after the Queen who wasknown as the Virgin Queen since she never married.

    They tried establishing this colony three times. They did nowsucceed until their third try and Virginia was the first Britishcolony created in America.

    she believed that catholics and protestants were part of thesame faith

    just wanted to make peace between the two

    thought it was wrong for people to be persecuted for theirbeliefs

    by the end of her reign as queen she created a strongprotestant church

    had the act of uniformity passed. Now everyone in England

    had to attend Protestant services

    The Theatre played a huge part during The Elizabethan Era

    Elizabeth granted permission to four noblemen to start their own theatrecompanies

    plays were first performed in nobleman's houses or courtyards of inns Theaters were later built for the plays to take place Watching plays was like going to a movie most theaters fit several thousand people

    peasants watched from the pit in front of the stage while the wealthy sat off tothe side

    people threw things at the actors if they did not like the play Plays were not allowed to be performed in the city or be about political topics

    Internal Problems

    England had a lot of financial problems during Elizabethsreign. They had to spend a lot of money on wars, so theydidnt have enough money for some things.

    Elizabeth was the head of the Church of England and boththe Catholics and the Puritans were not happy with thechurch. Elizabeth didnt want the Catholics to have toomuch power, but she didnt want to persecute theCatholics. There were still religious tensions in the country.

    By the end of Elizabeths reign the Parliament wanted morepower, but they did not push Elizabeth too much becauseshe was old and they respected her.

    External Problems When Elizabeth became queen, England was in war with

    France and England was not strong so Elizabeth ended thewar. By the treaty of Edinburgh she stop most of the risk fromFrance.

    Spain became the bigger threat to England. In 1588 then king

    of Spain send a fleet of ships to invade England but theEnglish navy defeated the Spanish armada and that was thebest time for England during Elizabeths reign time.

    At the end of Elizabeth's reign, they wanted to take control ofIreland but they didn't not doing well.
