What do you like about SUVs? • What don’t you like? • How do youplan to use one? • Where would you like to go? • We asked people a lot

of questions when we set out to design the Saturn VUE, because we wanted it to

be more than just another SUV. • We learned that people like the interior room

but not the exterior bulk that makes traditional SUVs hard to park, difficult to

get in and out of, and awkward to maneuver in traffic. • People also said they

like the off-road capability but they really didn’t intend to power their way up

rock piles or jump a dry wash in Baja. • And almost all said they’d prefer an SUV

that was fuel efficient, environmentally sensible and well equipped with safety

features. And a couple more things: how about throwing in some extra comfort

and convenience inside and a ride that wasn’t so bumpy? • So we designed the

VUE their way. Plenty of room, without the bulk. Strong but not muscle-bound.

Fuel efficient and conscious of the environment. Safe and smooth riding. • The

VUE could have been just another SUV. But then it wouldn’t have been a Saturn.

No bending, stretching or contorting required. The VUE has a full eight inches of ground clearance to handle dirt

roads or potholed streets yet provides a modest step-in height for you to easily negotiate. In fact, everything about the VUE

has been designed to fit how and where you’ll use it. For instance, the VUE’s bumpers are rugged but set at a car-friendly

height. The hood opens wide to offer full access to an engine compartment that has been equally well thought out. You’ll

find fluid containers positioned for easy reach and dipsticks that are color coded to lessen confusion. We’ve also chosen

cartridge oil filters that are simpler to change than spin-on types. Smart ergonomics continue around the back where the

entire cargo area is revealed by a rear liftgate that can be opened with one hand. Grab-style door handles and wide door

openings welcome you into an interior that is both comfortable and practical. Switches, buttons and knobs are easy to see,

understand and reach from the height-adjustable driver’s seat. And there’s plenty of hip room, shoulder room and headroom

for everyone. The rear seats even recline for added comfort. While you’re adding comfort, add Leather Appointments with

heated front seats and lumbar support. You’ll get leather-trimmed seats as well as a leather-wrapped automatic shifter

and steering wheel. This option, which requires the available Power Package, is shown in the foldout photo across the page.

Spacious interior—A four-way adjustable driver’s seat and adjustable steering wheel allow you to fullyappreciate the VUE’s headroom and legroom while driving.

Fold-flat front passenger seat—The front passenger seat folds down to accommodate loads as long as aneight-foot 2 x 4 with the liftgate closed.* Which is why you’ll also find a scratch-resistant seatback.

Instrument cluster—Gauges are easy to read at a glance and located just below the driver’s line of sight tothe road ahead. Including an oil-life monitor that signals when a change is due.

Audio systems—An AM/FM stereo with CD player is standard on the VUE AWD V6 and FWD V6. A singleCD/cassette system and six-disc in-dash CD changer/cassette system are optional on all models, and either canbe upgraded with the Advanced Audio System, which includes a 180-watt amplifier and 8-inch sub-woofer.

Door pockets—Roomy, expandable storage areas up front give you easy-to-reach, easy-to-see storage.There are also pockets in the back doors and a center storage area for your back seat passengers.

*Loads should be kept low, away from the air bags and windshield area, and should be properly secured.

Cargo area—30.8 cubic feet of easy-to-load space, all thanks to a low liftover height. Of course,there’s even more room with the rear seatbacks folded down. In addition, loading lights mounted

on the liftgate help illuminate all that space.

Cargo organizer—Paper or plastic? Either way, this cargo-floor-mounted bin simply lifts into place to secure grocery bags or other cargo and folds down when not in use.

Fold down the rear passenger seats, and you’ll have 63.8 cubic feet of cargo volume. A 70/30 split still allows room for passengers who can help carry what you haul.*

Side storage bins—VUE designers made every cubic inch count, installing recessed side storage bins in the cargo compartment to make use of otherwise wasted space behind the rear wheels.

They’re also handy places to stow items that would otherwise roll around.

Tie-down rings—Handy tie-down rings can be found throughout the cargo area to help secure loads.

The Ecotec 4 engine delivers

smooth power at all speeds

thanks to twin balancing shafts

that help cancel vibrations.

Several driveline choices. (And you thought picking a color would be tough.) The VUE V6. Both the FWD V6* and the

AWD V6 VUE are equipped with a 3.0-liter, V6 engine that packs 181 horsepower and an estimated 195 foot-pounds of torque.

Inside, there are dual-overhead-camshafts and four valves per cylinder that are perfectly content with 87-octane fuel. Plus

electronic throttle control for quick response and torque-heavy tuning for more power off the line.

A five-speed automatic transmission is standard with both the FWD V6* and AWD V6.The close-step gear ratios mean smoother

acceleration, especially when passing traffic. And since the shift points are matched with the engine torque curve, shifting is

less noticeable. You’ll also find an intermediate gear (the I in the P-R-N-D-I-L) in the gear-selector markings. The I setting acts

as 2nd through 4th gears and is especially useful in long downhill runs or when towing. • The Ecotec 4. Another way to go is

with the Ecotec 2.2-liter, four-cylinder, 143-horsepower engine. It has dual-overhead-camshafts and four valves per cylinder.

The engine block, head and crankshaft are built with a lost-foam casting that reduces the number of parts and creates a more

precise assembly. • A lively five-speed manual transmission is standard on our base model FWD 4. It adds a whole lot more

sport to this sport-utility vehicle. • The revolutionary VTi variable transmission is standard on the AWD 4 and optional on the

Unlike the heavy rpm fluctuations

of engines paired to traditional

automatic transmissions, an engine

with a variable transmission runs

continuously at its most efficient

speed. The result gives you smooth

acceleration and fuel efficiency.

The VTi variable transmission. The next generation of transmission technology is standard on the VUE AWD 4 and optional on

the FWD 4. Once the vehicle is put in Drive, the VTi’s system of flexible steel belts and hydraulically controlled pulleys continuously

adjusts the effective gear ratio for optimum performance regardless of your driving situation. Acceleration is seamless and smooth—no

jumping between gears on hills. And most important, the variable transmission makes certain the engine operates in its most efficient

range for fuel economy. Estimated mileage with the VTi is almost identical to that of the manual transmission—23 miles per gallon in

the city, 28 on the highway for the FWD 4. And an EPA-estimated 21 miles per gallon in the city, 26 on the highway for the AWD 4. • The

VTi also offers the same intermediate I setting that’s found on both the VUE FWD V6*and AWD V6 automatic transmissions. Located

between Drive and Low on the shift selector, Intermediate gives you better performance in long downhill runs or when towing.

The VUE’s all-wheel drive is fully automatic and seamless. On dry surfaces, the system

sends power to the front wheels only. When there is slippage, the system is smart

enough to balance the power between the front and rear wheels—so it flows where it’s

needed. For added support, an optional Anti-lock Braking System is also available on

all-wheel-drive models.On VUE models with front-wheel drive,* an Anti-lock Braking

System with Traction Control** option is available to help provide similar control.

No road too winding. The VUE’s backbone is a high-strength-steel spaceframe welded into a single solid structure. This design,

combined with a hydroformed engine cradle, allowed Saturn engineers to tune the four-wheel independent suspension to isolate the

driver and passengers from many of the road’s imperfections. To make the VUE agile and responsive to driver input, we added

electric power steering (EPS). With EPS, electronic sensors and computer controls measure and react to thousands of inputs a second,

adjusting steering assistance to help the VUE operate smoothly over rugged terrain and during evasive maneuvers.

Other standard safety features include driver and front passenger air bags,** attachments for LATCH child-safety seats on all

three rear seating positions, three-point safety belts throughout and daytime running lamps. Beyond collision safety, we’ve also

added a theft-deterrent system, child-safety door locks and battery run-down protection. • High-tech safety features are

important, but nothing can replace sound engineering that helps protect you. For instance, take a look at the VUE’s stance; it’s

wide and offers a low step-in height. Combine that stance with four-wheel independent suspension, and handling becomes

even more predictable. Of course, most of the engineering feats on the VUE are a lot less noticeable. Lift the rear hatch inside

the cargo area, and you’ll find the spare tire is mounted at a slight angle. It’s a small adjustment that actually helps the

spaceframe crumple zone absorb energy and transfer momentum to minimize overall intrusion during a rear collision. • It would

take hours to explain every engineering nuance. Not to mention how we tested the VUE for over 2.5 million miles, covering just

about every kind of road you’re likely to encounter in a lifetime of driving (and some unpaved terrain and environments you

may never want to attempt). Regardless, our goal was simple: to test and refine the VUE to exceed the standards set by the

government and, hopefully, you.

driver and front and rear passengers in outboard seating positions from head and neck injuries in certain side-impact

collisions. Optional Head Curtain Side Air Bags inflate in 1/20th of a second and drop down like curtains. They’re the latest

in a list of safety features and options that begin with the VUE’s spaceframe. Its high-strength-steel stampings are welded

into a single solid safety cage with crumple zones to help absorb front or rear collisions. And reinforced windshield pillars

and bodyside structures to help shield occupants from side-impact collisions.

*Always use safety belts and proper child restraints, even with air bags. Head Curtain Side Air Bags are designed to help reduce the risk of head and neck injuries to front and rear seatoccupants on the near side of certain side-impact collisions. All Saturn models are equipped with driver and front passenger frontal-impact air bags. The primary benefit of any frontal airbag is to help protect occupants in certain collisions by supplementing the protection provided by safety belts. However, even with air bags, there remain fatal risks to infants in rear-facingrestraints and to other children who are not properly secured when the air bag inflates. Children are safer when properly secured in a rear seat. Never secure an infant in a rear-facingrestraint in the front seat of any vehicle with an active air bag.
