Mahalo Hawaiian Dredging for allowing us tobe a part of the Aulani Disney Resort project

once upon a timeSo begins many beloved

fairytales brought to life by Disney. And with Aulani – Disney’s first standalone resort (i.e. sans theme park) – the entertainment titan brings to life another tale, weaving Hawaii’s history and stories with that renowned Disney “magic” to celebrate and share Hawaii’s culture and traditions.

“The name Aulani means ‘messenger of a chief’ or ‘the one who delivers a message from a higher authority,’” according to the company, “reflecting Disney’s deep commitment to Hawaiian history.”

“The resort tells the story of the land and the beliefs of the people,” explains the jobsite team from Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc. (HDCC), the general contractor of the project. “The Aulani project was very unique in that Disney did not come here just to build another Hawaiian-themed resort; they wanted their resort to be genuinely Hawaiian with the spirit and feel of Hawaii. Everyone involved, from the owner down to each craftsman installing the work, had to understand and ‘feel’ the story in order to be able to implement its message. From the rock work, wood work, and FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) arches through the artwork and furnishings, each space had to exude the appropriate meaning of the place.”

Situated on 21 acres of oceanfront property at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina, Aulani welcomed its first guests on Aug. 29. Those fortunate ones were treated to a resort where the story is embedded into nearly every aspect of the property, from the canoe house main lobby and courtyard to the guest rooms and corridors, down to the numerous hidden menehune statues.

The just opened first phase consists of 217 hotel

rooms and 123 Disney Vacation Club villas (timeshares) within two 16-story towers. Additional units were planned to be added in November, with final buildout in 2013 giving the resort a total of 359 standard hotel rooms and 481 timeshare villas.

The project architect of record was Architects Hawaii, Ltd. (AHL), with guidance from Disney architects and Imagineers. According to Lisa Rapp, AIA, principal of AHL, who helped lead an AIA (American Institute of Architects) Honolulu chapter-sponsored tour in October, the resort is laid out to convey the concept of ahupuaa as you move through the

The guest rooms exude a Hawaiian sense of place while also including Disney references (see the mouse ears in the quilt).

property, from the lusher, wetter environment (mauka) near the buildings toward the sandier, drier areas to the ocean (makai). Starting at the lobby and continuing to the guest towers, the Hawaiian concept of a masculine and feminine duality also is represented, most noticeably in the lobby’s water feature – two streams – the calm, lily-filled feminine (hina) on the left and the active, rushing masculine (ku) on the right, with both coming together in a waterfall.

Disney also worked with students from Nanaikapono Elementary School to create icons for a map of Hawaii on display in the Holoholo Room, adds Walt Disney Co., and photographs taken by local students are featured in

a 55-foot rainbow collage behind the check-in desk. To add further authenticity to the story, Aulani features works of many Hawaii artists and is now considered to be the home of the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts outside of Bishop Museum.

Be our guestThe story continues in the richly

appointed guest rooms, which incorporate kapa and lauhala patterns, along with hidden and not-so-hidden Disney references (such as mouse ears on the Hawaiian bed quilts and Mickey Mouse lamps).

But while the rooms exude a vintage Hawaiian sense of place, they are also equipped with modern conveniences, including a flat-panel television and DVD player, deep soaking tub, wireless Internet, and private porch or balcony.

And no Disney story, Hawaiian or otherwise, would be complete without a plethora of amenities – including, according to HDCC, approximately

40,000 square feet of outdoor venues – designed to give all those young and young-at-heart a one-of-kind guest experience. These include:• Waikolohe Valley — a vast water

play area that includes adventurous tube slides, a lazy river, the mischievous Menehune Bridge kids water play area and a quiet pool.

• Rainbow Reef — a snorkel lagoon where kids and families can get up close to 150 species of Hawaiian marine life such as angelfish, butterfly fish and other native aquatic species.

• Aunty’s Beach House, where kids can enjoy musical instruments, learn to create native Hawaiian crafts and interact with beloved Disney characters.

• Laniwai Spa — guests can achieve “ultimate relaxation” through one of almost 150 spa therapies at the 18,000-square-foot Laniwai, which also includes Painted Sky, an area designed specifically for teens featuring activities and treatments created especially for this age group.

• a 2,000-square-foot fitness center featuring group exercise sessions or one-on-one training• a 15,000-square-foot conference center• a wedding lawn for a Disney “fairy tale wedding”• numerous dining venues, from the resort’s signature Ama Ama restaurant and Makahiki buffet, which hosts the renowned Disney character breakfasts, to the Olelo Room and Off the Hook lounges and some quick service eateries, including the One Paddle, Two Paddle deli, Lava Shack plate lunch; Papalua Shave Ice “shack” and Rip Swirl yogurt.“Our guests will find that this resort is a Hawaiian paradise for families with a touch of Disney magic,” says Walt Disney Co., “a one-of-a-kind resort destination that will transform the way kids and families experience these magical islands. … At Aulani, it’s more than just a fun vacation…it’s a true Hawaiian adventure.”

The lazy river flows through simulated lava tubes and steam vents.

setting the stage“To be able to ‘tell the

story,’ HDCC’s construction team along with Disney worked side by side with Hawaiian cultural consultants and local artists to cultivate the spiritual influence of Aulani,” says HDCC of the construction process.

When the nearly 110-year-old general contracting firm accepted the “monumental challenge” from its “iconic client,” HDCC continues, “The objective (was to figure) out how to successfully manage

and build more than 1.2 million square feet of space with 21 acres of site development in a short period of less than 32 months, while being able to tell the story of Aulani. It would turn out to be a most tremendous undertaking using the fast-track delivery method and eventually requiring nearly 1,000 craft labor, numerous staff resources in pre-construction, design and other critical support roles and the sourcing of expertise and materials worldwide.”

Experience That’s

Diversified

Despite the condensed schedule,

attention to detail was still paramount, says both

HDCC and AHL. When areas were ready to be turned over, the

Disney artisans were brought in to ensure that Disney’s signature realism

and authenticity were visible to complete the story, explains HDCC, adding that

numerous times during the finishing phases,

certain aspects were redone when needed.

“Disney is very attentive to the

impressions of their

guests. This added another dimension to the attention to detail. Much emphasis was placed on the construction details to ensure that the realism would be conveyed. Every dimension, fitted joint and interface was reviewed many times to achieve perfection.”

In the end, HDCC says, “What was unique about this project was, despite the pressures, a sense of laulima (cooperation) and kokua, along with a positive ‘can do’ attitude could be felt throughout the entire project. This was so prevalent through every part of the project that the kahu and cultural consultants later commented on how they could ‘feel the spirit, soul and hands of all the workers’ as they

walked through the completed resort.Continued on page 50

ever After“Disney architects, local con-

struction teams and cultural experts worked together to create a destina-tion unlike any other,” concludes Walt Disney Co. “Everything tells a story at Aulani. Every space, piece of wood, shape and pattern was designed to tell stories of the past, present and future of the Hawaiian culture and its connection to the natural world. The stories are multi-layered, multifaceted and meaningful, which makes the connection between Hawaiian culture and Disney’s legendary attention to detail such a natural fit.” BI
