SPEAKER PLACEMENT

SUBWOOFER

SURROUND SPEAKERS

FRONT SPEAKERS

0–2 ft0–0.6m

The front speakers should beplaced the same distancefrom each other as they arefrom the listening position. The CSB5 speakers should beplaced at about the sameheight from the floor as thelisteners’ ears will be, or theymay be angled toward thelisteners. The center channel speakershould be placed slightlybehind the front left and rightspeakers, and no more than 2 feet (0.6m) above or belowthe tweeters of the left andright speakers. It is oftenconvenient to set the centerspeaker on top of thetelevision set, as shown in thedrawing. The JBL Cinema Soundspeaker system may be usedin 5.1-, 6.1- or 7.1-channelapplications. In 5.1-channelapplications, two of thesurround speakers should be

placed slightly behind thelistening position and, ideally, should face each other and beat a level higher than thelisteners’ ears. If that is notpossible, they may be placedagainst a wall behind the listening position, facingforward. In 6.1-channel appli-cations, two of the surroundspeakers should be placed inthe side positions, and asingle surround back speakershould be placed against thewall behind the listeningposition. In 7.1-channelapplications, place two of thesurround speakers in the sidepositions, and place the twosurround back speakersagainst the rear wall.In Dolby® Digital and DTS®

systems, it is best to aim all ofthe speakers (except thesubwoofer) toward thelistening position at or slightlyabove about ear-level height.

In systems where only analogsurround processing (such asDolby Pro Logic® II) isavailable, it may be preferableto aim the speakers straightout from the wall to obtain amore diffuse sound. The low-frequency materialreproduced by the subwooferis mostly omnidirectional, andthis speaker may be placed ina convenient location in theroom. However, bassreproduction will bemaximized when thesubwoofer is placed in acorner along the same wall asthe front speakers.Experiment with subwooferplacement by temporarilyplacing the subwoofer in thelistening position and movingaround the room until the bass reproduction is best. Place thesubwoofer in that location.

CENTER CHANNELSPEAKER

† Single surround back speaker may be used with 6.1 receiversand processors.

Alternate placement for surround speakers when only 5.1 channels are used; required placement for surround backspeakers in 7.1-channel systems.

The CSC55 center channeland the CSB5 are designed tobe mounted on the wall. Thereare two (2) fixed-mount wallbrackets provided for theCSC55, and one for the CSB5.Each speaker bracket willrequire up to three 1-1/2" #10wood screws; each screwshould be fastened to a wallstud. If a wall stud is unavailable, install an anchor appropriatefor a 1-1/2" #10 screw. NOTE: The customer isresponsible for the correctselection and use of mountinghardware (available throughhardware stores) to ensurethe proper and safe wall-mounting of the speakers.

Step 1. Using the includedmounting template (CSC55only) or the bracket back plate(CSB5 only), mark thepositions on the wall whereyou would like to place themounting screws.Step 2. Attach the backplate(s) of the bracket to the wall using three screws (not included).Step 3. Attach the frontplate(s) (with the two holes) ofthe bracket(s) to the CSC55 orCSB5, using the providedscrews.Step 4. Slide the CSC55 orCSB5 speaker with attachedbracket front plate(s) onto theback plate(s) of thebracket(s).

Once positioned properly, thespeaker should slide downslightly and become secure. To remove the speaker from the wall, simply slide thespeaker up.

CONNECTION TIPS

SPEAKER CONNECTIONS

Separate and strip the ends of the speaker wire as shown. Speakers and electronicsterminals have corresponding(+) and (–) terminals. Mostmanufacturers of speakersand electronics, includingJBL, use red to denote the (+)terminal and black to denotethe (–) terminal. The (+) lead of the speakerwire is noted with a stripe. It is important to connect bothspeakers identically: (+) on the speaker to (+) on the amplifier and (–) on thespeaker to (–) on the amplifier.Wiring “out of phase” resultsin thin sound, weak bass anda poor stereo image. With the advent of multichan-nel surround sound systems, connecting all of the speakersin your system with thecorrect polarity remainsequally important in order topreserve the proper ambienceand directionality of theprogram material.

CST55To provide a neater installa-tion, the CST55 allows you toinsert the speaker wiresthrough holes in the base.Simply separate and strip the wires as described above, loosen the terminals andinsert each wire into its corresponding hole in thebase. Then tighten down theterminals.

CSB5, CSC55To use the binding-postspeaker terminals, unscrewthe colored collar until thepass-through hole in thecenter post is visible underthe collar. Insert the bare endof the wire through this hole;then screw the collar downuntil the connection is tight. The hole in the center of each collar is intended for use with banana-typeconnectors. To comply withEuropean CE certification, these holes are blocked withplastic inserts at the point ofmanufacture. To use banana-typeconnectors requires theremoval of the inserts.

DOLBY PRO LOGIC® (NON-DIGITAL) – LINE LEVEL

Use this installation methodfor Dolby Pro Logicapplications (not Dolby Digital,DTS or other digitalprocessing), where thereceiver/processor isequipped with a subwooferoutput, or a volumecontrolledpreamp (line-) level output:

Use RCA-type interconnectsto connect the line-level subwoofer outputs on yourreceiver or amplifier to theline-level inputs on thesubwoofer. IMPORTANT: Donot use the LFE input on thesubwoofer with DolbyPro Logic processors.

NOTE: If your receiver oramplifier has only onesubwoofer output jack, thenyou will need to use a Y-connector (not included).Plug the male end of the Y-connector into your receiveror amplifier’s subwooferoutput jack, and connect eachof the two female ends toseparate RCA-typeinterconnects. Finally, plug theRCA-type interconnects intothe line-level inputs on thesubwoofer.Connect each speaker to the corresponding speakerterminals on your receiver or amplifier.Make sure your receiver orprocessor is correctlyconfigured to indicate that thesubwoofer is “On.”

Use this installation methodfor Dolby Digital, DTS or otherdigital surround processors: Use the line-level input jackmarked “LFE” for the Low-Frequency Effects channel.

Connect this jack to the LFEoutput or subwoofer output on your receiver or amplifier.Connect each speaker to the corresponding speaker terminals on your receiver or amplifier.Make sure that you haveconfigured your surroundsound processor for “Sub-woofer On.” Also configureyour receiver for 5.1-, 6.1-

or 7.1-channel operation asappropriate. The front left, front right, center and rearspeakers should all be set to “Small.” If your receiverallows you to set the cross-over frequency between thesubwoofer and the mainspeakers, select 100Hz or the setting that is the closestfrequency below it.

SUBWOOFER OPERATIONPress the Master Powerswitch (marked “Power” a)to the On position to use thesubwoofer. The CSS10subwoofer will automaticallyturn on or go into standby(sleep) mode as describedbelow. When your receiver oramplifier is off, or is notsending program material to the subwoofer, thesubwoofer will be in standbymode (the LED on the front ofthe CSS10 will be red). Whenthe subwoofer senses anaudio signal, it willautomatically turn on (the LEDwill be green). If thesubwoofer does not sense asignal after approximately 20minutes, it will automaticallygo into standby mode.If you will be away from homefor an extended period of time,

or if the subwoofer will not beused, switch the MasterPower switch a to the Off

position by pressing it until itpops out.

VOLUME

Volume may be adjusted usingthe Subwoofer Level controlb, as shown.

The Phase control determineswhether the subwoofer’spistonlike action moves in andout in phase with the mainspeakers or opposite the mainspeakers. There is no corrector incorrect setting. Properphase adjustment depends onseveral variables, such assubwoofer placement andlistener position. Adjust thePhase switch c to maximizebass output at the listeningposition.

Remember, every system, room and listener is different. There are no right or wrongsettings; this switch offers theadded flexibility to adjust yoursubwoofer for optimumperformance for your specificlistening conditions withouthaving to move your speakers. If at some time in the futureyou happen to rearrange yourlistening room and move yourspeakers, you shouldexperiment with the phaseswitch in both positions, andleave it in the position thatmaximizes bass performance.
