Police in the Iranian capital, Tehran, have arrested 29

people for their involvement in protests against the country’s compulsory headscarf law.

Women across Iran have been removing their headscarves in public to protest Iran’s strict Islamic dress code. Videos and photos shared on social media have shown demonstrators standing on utility boxes on street sidewalks, defiantly waving their hijabs.

Tehran police suggested that their actions were incited by foreigners, saying those arrested

were “deceived” into removing their hijabs, Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim News Agency reported. The 29 protesters have been transferred to judicial authorities, the report said.

An Italian man opened fire on African migrants in the central

city of Macerata yesterday, injuring several people, police said, in an attack that appeared to be racially motivated.

The shootings happened just days after a Nigerian migrant was arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman, whose dismembered body was discovered hidden in two suitcases near Macerata.

The incident looks certain to jolt campaigning for a March 4 national election, with a center-right alliance that leads in the polls promoting a fiercely anti-migrant program.

Local media reported that at least six migrants were shot by a man firing out of a car window as he drove around Macerata, which is located about 200 km (125 miles) east of Rome.

Police later said they had arrested an Italian man and published a photo of him, with an Italian flag draped over his shoulders, being taken away by armed officers.

State television Rai said he was a 28-year-old from Macerata and that a pistol had been discovered in his Alfa Romeo car.

Police said one of the injured foreigners needed surgery, but gave no further details.

Local witnesses said a man fired out of his car window at two young African migrants shortly after 11 a.m. (5.00 a.m. ET), wounding one of them. A short while later there were reports of further drive-by shootings in the city.

Right-wing politicians campaigning ahead of next month’s vote had leapt on the gruesome death of the teenager Pamela Mastropietro to promote their anti-migrant message.

A preliminary postmortem on the

teenager could not immediately identify her cause of death. The Nigerian suspect, who was denied asylum last year but has remained in Italy, has refused to talk to police.

“What was this worm still doing in Italy?” Matteo Salvini, head of the far-right League, wrote on Facebook, accusing the center-left government of responsibility over Mastropietro’s death for allowing migrants to stay in the country.

“The left has blood on its hands,” he wrote.

Magistrates say witnesses saw the Nigerian suspect carrying the suitcases that were later found to contain the teenager’s body. They also found

b l o o d -s t a i n e d clothes and knives in his possession.

More than 600,000 mainly African migrants have reached Italy by boat over the past four years. The center-right bloc, which includes the League, says the vast majority have no right to asylum and has promised mass expulsions if it takes power.

Leftist parties have ruled out any such deportations.

“The news from Macerata leaves me horrified and shocked. We must stop this spiral of hate and violence,” said Pietro Grasso, who is the head of the Free and Equal party. (Reuters)

For 11 young Bahraini women, the new year had

to start with taking themselves beyond normal boundaries and achieving an outstanding act of valour.

So when Fajr Talal Mufeez and Fatima Ali Al Mahmood, two Bahrainis with an exceptional vision and admirable courage, talked about a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest

mountain in Africa and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, there was a positive response from Bahraini and other young Gulf women. The adventurers, overcoming social stereotyping, were elated and seized the opportunity of the trip of a lifetime.

Fajer Talal Mufeez, Fatima Ali Al Mahmood, Noor Talal Mufeez, Nada Hameed, Faten Ibrahim Matar, Nawara Bahzad, Rasha Yusuf, Alia Al Qahtani, Noor Al Saad, Mona

Zainal and Nadya Eqab from Bahrain were joined by two from Kuwait, and one from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iraq to form the largest Gulf women expedition.

They were all genuinely determined to overcome the challenge of climbing 5,895 metres above sea level for a highly special New Year feat.

The trip to Tanzania was fun and filled with events, including a highly memorable safari. However, the real

excitement started when the preparations for the historic climb were finalised.

“Mount Kili, here we come,” said Rasha Yusuf, an adventurer at heart and a travel and documentary photographer by passion who has been to 62 countries across the globe. For seven days, the expedition confronted various forms of challenges, both within themselves and from natural elements. They took the Lemosho Route,

considered a very wild side, but also the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro. Each day was more challenging than the previous ones and altitude sickness compounded with cold overnight temperatures to harshly and mercilessly put to test the courage of the climbers. However, the young women had enough willpower and strength to keep on moving upwards, regardless of the mentally tough and physically demanding efforts

that required walking at odd times and through sub-freezing temperatures to reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of the mountain. “I remember the clouds and the dead silence, you cannot help but listen to your deep thoughts and reflect,” Nada Hameed said at 4,000 metres. There were new challenges, laced with great anticipations to accomplish the feat and fears of non-responsive reflexes due to incredible conditions.

Bahrainisation: MP seeks sops for private sectorMuhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

Private sector companies hiring Bahrainis should be

given incentives to encourage Bahrainisation, MP Adel Hameed has said.

“Private companies employing 80 per cent or more Bahrainis should be exempted from paying various fees to obtain permits,” MP Adel Hameed told DT News yesterday while explaining his proposal submitted.

“Offering more incentives and benefits to companies employing Bahrainis would contribute to Bahraini jobs and tackle the unemployment issue,” he said.

Hameed had raised the issue during an open discussion with Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan in May 2016 in the House of Representatives. The minister pledged back then to “look into the suggestion”.

“The ministry made many promises, but nothing is implemented in reality. I know companies in the private sector that consists of only Bahrainis. Yet, they are not granted any privileges and are treated the same way as other establishments that are not committed to Bahrainisation,” he said. He hinted that the proposal could be reintroduced as a bill to compel implementation by the

government. “The proposal will help decrease unemployment, reduce pressure on authorities, which makes endless efforts to create employment opportunities for Bahrainis in the private sector to benefit the Kingdom’s economy”.

“Bahrainisation rates in many companies remain low. This increases the unemployment, especially university graduates. And, despite the great efforts of the concerned authorities, especially the Labour and Social Development Ministry, in raising the rates of Bahrainisation, the numbers are still very low,” he said.

When asked about his proposal to reduce fees, the MP said,“This will include all government fees on different permits, such as work permits

and the other requirements of Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry, in accordance with the nature of the business.”

“Many companies provide the minimum required rate of Bahrainisation to avoid the application of the legal procedures against it for the violation of the rates of Bahrainisation rates. But, there are no real incentives for companies that take initiatives to raise rates of Bahrainis hired in them. There are some companies with high rates of Baharnisation that are not receiving the necessary encouragement. This reflects that there are gaps in the goals and objectives of this legal legislation,” the lawmaker added.

The media is the people

Ahdeya [email protected]

Last week the story of 19 members of one family living in house in a very bad and miserable shape

went viral. The house showed members of the family living in cabins in the outdoor yard area and Bahrain was hit by the pictures and videos that were spread. I contacted the charity society that went viral with the videos in an attempt to raise BD8000 to renovate the house and the whole idea behind the call was to use the press to promote the issue and ask concerned authorities to intervene to help this family and provide them with any kind of assistance to renovate the place where a 19-member family live. I believe that we in the press industry have a bigger role to play than just report news. We can make a difference by highlighting these stories, bringing them to our pages as content and involving everyone who can help, not forgetting that some issues may also be considered social responsibility. After all, we as a society should also help those in need.

And this is what we will try to do now, help others. Press is one of the strongest tools that can be used to show bitter realities of many people and hold certain authorities accountable for any mismanagement that leads to shortcomings and not providing the public the rights they are entitled to.

So far I have spoken to many families and individuals and all fear that when their identity is exposed, they would upset their families as they would be viewed as needy. What we need to seriously address here is that many people are actually asking for basic rights that the government entities are obliged to address and provide, whether they are health, housing, municipal services or jobs.

People should not feel that they need to be humiliated through the press or social media, through identities being revealed in order to be provided what is their right. We therefore decided that identities will be hidden, yet, we will help convey their messages to concerned authorities and make sure that their issues are addressed.

Now going back to the house where 19 people live, let me share with our readers that the money being raised to help this family has so far come from charity organisations and the public. One needy family collected BD6 and sent it to the charity society that is raising money to renovate that house. Only BD 6 is what they could afford and they decided to collect it and help someone else who needs it more. I literally had tears as I read this part of the story because it shows how the people of Bahrain are. I am a Bahraini myself and I know that my people are generous and have so much to give and I know that when they can help, they never hesitate to.

But what I also know is that there are budgets allocated for the renovation of houses and I actually hoped that this would’ve been a case fully adopted by the concerned ministries. I hoped that the broadcast spread yesterday with an update about how much had been raised so far, had included what concerned government entities had contributed with.

Bahrainis do not need to be exposed in order to get a right they are entitled to. Their dignity may sometimes stop them from demanding what is their right. I therefore hope that concerned government entities will respond to our calls through the press to help these cases in a positive manner. We will preserve identities to preserve their dignities. I hope that all government will look at us, with every case we raise, as their partners. After all, this newspaper is the states, the governments and the peoples voice.

Code of ethics for health personnelDT News NetworkManama

The National Health Regulatory Authority

(NHRA) has issued a code of ethics for health professionals, a framework of legal requirements for all members of the health sector in Bahrain.

The code contains 20 rules that govern the work of health professionals, including providing safe care, dealing with negative events, caring in emergency cases, respecting patients, maintaining confidentiality, consent of patients to treatment provided, matters relating to the beginning and end of human life, care for patients with infectious diseases, rules

to be followed when referring patients and prescription drugs.

The code also deals with duties towards colleagues, towards the profession, and

towards the National Health Regulatory Authority, the use of social media and health advertisements.

“This code was prepared by the National Health Regulatory Authority to serve as an ethical guide for health professionals in the public and private sectors in Bahrain,” Mariam Al Jalahma, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Regularity Authority, said.

“It is based on fundamental ethical and professional principles to define the general responsibilities of all health care providers towards their patients, colleagues, profession, themselves and their community at the same time.”

Passive objects or women in charge? The Manchester Art Gallery in the United Kingdom has removed the

famous painting “Hylas and the Nymphs” by J.W. Waterhouse as it rethinks the representation of women in art. The painting’s removal, which was meant to encourage debate” about how such paintings are displayed in today’s society, has immediately sparked controversy over censorship in the art world. While this needs to be addressed, it is important to focus on the Gallery’s initial intention to debate how women are represented in art.

It is widely acknowledged that there is a lack of female characters in film and literature, however it is interesting to note that female subjects abound in the fine arts. Although there are plenty of portraits of kings, male politicians and men in battle, the female figure—quite literally—is front and center. Indeed, some of the most celebrated paintings in the world are of women: Whistler’s Mother, The Birth of Venus, Girl with a Pearl Earring and of course the Mona Lisa, the world’s most famous painting.

While the increase in female stories is lauded in film and literature, the same cannot be said about the fine arts. In the former, women get to speak, voice their opinions and have agency, which is probably why there is a lack of female protagonists: for most of history, male artists have dominated across art mediums. In paintings and sculpture, women do not speak: their beauty is put on a pedestal, frozen and silent. Although there are paintings where the woman’s beauty is less “conventional,” much classical artwork focuses on beautiful women (sometimes in the nude) meant entirely for the male gaze.

Yet however static it may be, artwork still tells a story. A painting of a woman can still have agency, if the painter chooses to represent her in this manner. A perhaps ironic example is the very painting the Manchester Art Gallery chose to remove. In “Hylas and the Nymphs,” the beautiful nymphs are not passive objects but women in charge. As per the Greek myth on which the painting is based, the women are in the process of abducting the warrior Hylas. The painting proves that women can be represented without coming across as mere objects.

In the end, art reflects society, and social changes can be seen in the art we create. As the artists of today reflect on the strong narratives of women being discussed, their artwork will hopefully reflect these notions and will be displayed alongside classical art so that the story of women’s representation can be better understood.

Massive Mayan society found in Guatemala jungle

Guatemala City

Researchers using a high-tech aerial mapping

technique have found tens of thousands of previously undetected Mayan houses, buildings, defense works and pyramids in the dense jungle of Guatemala’s Peten region, suggesting that millions more people lived there than previously thought.

The discoveries, which included industrial-sized agricultural fields and irrigation canals, were announced Thursday by an alliance of U.S., European and Guatemalan archaeologists working with Guatemala’s Mayan Heritage and Nature Foundation.

The study estimates that roughly 10 million people may have lived within the Maya Lowlands, meaning that kind of massive food production might have been needed.

“That is two to three times more (inhabitants) than people were saying there were,” said Marcello A. Canuto, a professor of Anthropology at Tulane

University.Researchers used a

mapping technique called LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection And Ranging. It bounces pulsed laser light off the ground, revealing contours hidden by dense foliage.

The images revealed that the Mayans altered the landscape in a much broader way than previously thought; in some areas, 95 percent of available land was cultivated.

“Their agriculture is much more intensive and therefore sustainable than we thought, and they were cultivating every inch of the land,” said Francisco Estrada-Belli, a Research Assistant Professor at Tulane University, noting the ancient Mayas partly drained swampy areas that haven’t been considered worth farming since.

And the extensive defensive fences, ditch-and-rampart systems and irrigation canals suggest a highly organized workforce.

“There’s state involvement here, because we see large canals being dug that

are re-directing natural water flows,” said Thomas Garrison, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Ithaca College in New York.

The 810 square miles (2,100 square kilometers) of mapping done vastly expands the area that was intensively occupied by the Maya, whose culture flourished between roughly 1,000 BC and 900 AD. Their descendants still live in the region.

The mapping detected about 60,000 individual structures, including four major Mayan ceremonial centers with plazas and pyramids.

Garrison said that this year he went to the field with the LiDAR data to look for one of the roads revealed. “I found it, but if I had not had the LiDAR and known that that’s what it was, I would have walked right over it, because of how dense the jungle is.”

Garrison noted that unlike some other ancient cultures, whose fields, roads and outbuildings have been destroyed by subsequent

generations of farming, the jungle grew over abandoned Maya fields and structures, both hiding and preserving them.

“In this the jungle, which has hindered us in our discovery efforts for so long, has actually worked as this great preservative tool of the impact the culture had across the landscape,” noted Garrison, who worked on the project and specializes in the city of El Zotz, near Tikal.

LiDAR revealed a previously undetected structure between the two sites that Garrison says “can’t be called anything other than a Maya fortress.”

“It’s this hill-top citadel that has these ditch and rampart systems ... when I went there, one of these things in nine meters tall,” he noted.

In a way, the structures were hiding in plain sight.

“As soon as we saw this we all felt a little sheepish,” said Canuto said of the LiDAR images, “because these were things that we had been walking over all the time.” (AP)

Suicide bomber kills 11 in northern PakistanPesjawar

At least 11 soldiers were killed and 13 wounded

yesterday in a suicide attack near an army base in northern Pakistan, officials said, in a region that was once controlled by a local faction of the Taliban.

The Pakistan Army’s public relations wing said in a statement that the “suicide attack” in the Swat Valley took place at the “army unit sports area”.

“The soldiers were playing volleyball in the evening outside the military base...when a suicide bomber managed to blow himself up,” said a security official who asked not to be identified.

The match was also being

watched by civilians, and the casualty count could rise as a large number of people had gathered in the area, he said, adding that wounded were being shifted to a nearby military hospital.

The attack was claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, in a statement sent to the media.

“God willing Tehreek-e-Taliban has started the process of revenge attacks,” Taliban spokesman Mohammad Khurasani said in the statement. “Wait for more (attacks) to follow.”

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi condemned the attack.

Washington

Donald Trump and his Republican allies

unleashed a controversial memo accusing the FBI of bias and abuse of power Friday, intensifying a high-stakes fight between the White House and prosecutors investigating the president’s campaign team.

Trump defied his own FBI director and the Justice Department to declassify the four-page Republican document, which implies malfeasance and partisanship at the very top of American law enforcement.

“I think it’s a disgrace. What’s going on in this country, I think it’s a disgrace,” a visibly tense Trump said as he announced his decision to release the memo. “A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves and much worse than that.”

Democrats and some Republicans have cried foul over the document, dismissing its release as little more than a stunt, and another thinly veiled effort to undermine the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties with Russia.

They claim the document -- drafted by Devin Nunes, a Trump transition official, Congressman and House Intelligence Committee

chairman -- has glaring holes. The FBI itself said it had “grave concerns” over its accuracy.

The memo claims that Democrat-funded research

prompted the FBI to spy on a former Trump campaign aide, Carter Page.

In a subsequent statement, White House press secretary

Sarah Sanders said the document “raises serious concerns about the integrity of decisions made at the highest levels of the Department of

Justice and the FBI.”Trump’s son Don Jr tweeted

that it should be “game over” for the Russia investigation.

Trump’s one-year-old presidency has been dominated by allegations that multiple aides, including Don Jr and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, may have coordinated with the Kremlin to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Special counsel Robert Mueller has already indicted two officials including Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and two more campaign officials have admitted lying to investigators -- including onetime national security advisor Michael Flynn.

The 71-year-old president has decried the allegations as fake news and a Democratic plot. Mueller is soon expected to ask him to testify under oath about what he knows.

‘Talk is cheap’The memo’s release sent shockwaves across Washington, calling into question the future of Trump’s hand-picked FBI Director Christopher Wray.

But he shrugged off attacks on the FBI’s independence and pledged to defend his agents in an internal letter sent to staff

on Friday.“Talk is cheap; the work you

do is what will endure,” Wray wrote.

“Let me be clear: I stand fully committed to our mission... I stand with you.”

The FBI had previously issued an extraordinary public warning against the memo’s release, saying it contained “material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”

But perhaps the biggest question hung over deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein.

Rosenstein oversees the Russia investigation and has the power to fire special counsel Mueller, because his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, recused himself.

He was the only law enforcement official named in the memo who has not already been fired by Trump or moved from their post.

Trump, when asked if he has confidence in Rosenstein, told journalists in the Oval Office: “You figure that one out.”

But the president faced intense pushback from Democrats in Congress, who warned that any attempt to fire Rosenstein or Mueller would be seen as obstruction. (AFP)

Egypt unveils 4,400-year-old tomb of ancient priestessCairo

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a

4,400-year-old tomb near the country’s famed pyramids at the Giza plateau just outside Cairo, the Antiquities Ministry said yesterday.

The tomb was found in a wider area of Giza’s western necropolis, which is known to be home to tombs from the Old Kingdom.

It likely belonged to a woman known as Hetpet, who archaeologists believe was close to ancient Egyptian royals of the 5th Dynasty.

The tomb, unveiled to the media is made of mud brick and includes wall paintings

in good condition depicting Hetpet observing different hunting and fishing scenes.

Other scenes also depict a

monkey — in pharaonic times, monkeys were commonly kept as domestic animals — picking fruit. Similar scenes

have been found in other tombs belonging to the later 12th dynasty, according to the ministry’s statement. Another scene shows a monkey dancing before an orchestra.

According to the ministry, the archaeological mission behind the discovery started excavation work last October. Archaeologists have been making discoveries near the site since the 19th century, and Mostafa al-Waziri, who led the mission, believes there is still more to be found.

“This is a very promising area. We expect to find more,” Al-Waziri told reporters at the site. “We have removed between 250-300 cubic meters

of layers of earth to find the tomb.”

“What we see above the earth’s surface in Egypt doesn’t exceed 40 percent of what the core holds,” he added.

Al-Waziri believes Hetpet had another tomb in Giza’s western necropolis and

said that excavation work is underway to find that one too.

Hetpet is a previously known figure in Egyptian antiquity though her mummy has not been discovered yet. Fragments of artefacts belonging to Hetpet were found in the same area back in 1909, and were moved to a museum in Berlin at the time, Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani said Saturday, speaking at the site to reporters and Western diplomats.

Despite all the discoveries already made about ancient Egypt, experts say they hope to find much more — in part thanks to modern technology — treasures still buried under the vast desert. (AP)

Some individuals may conceive the innovation journey as linear, fast, and an accidental, while others view it as a slow, structured

and a well-engineered process. However, humans suffer from a set of biases that are likely to obstruct innovations at organizational and national level. In his book, Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman outlined a set of biases in thinking which included biases related to rules of thumb, statistical errors, and misconceptions. I argue that these problems in thinking are likely to obstruct innovation for individuals and organizations.

Human brain is a device for pattern recognition that employs two distinct systems for cognition; i.e., one system that is characterized as intuitive and fast while the other system is slow and applies scientific reasoning. The key message is to train human mind to avoid common mistakes and flaws due to the laziness in applying critical and statistical thinking. Most people are impatient and do not devote adequate attention to think through problems. Instead, peoples accept rules of thumb which are not scientifically-founded.

For example, explaining corrections or causality between education, income and innovation, as in the case of Beethoven, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs may be explained in statistics as Outliers and regression towards the mean. In other words, the few billionaires who are college drop-outs do not explain the fact that education is a key factor for fostering progress and economic development. Some of the human biases include that we fail to calculate sums but base our judgments on average; we over-estimate the probability of unlikely events; we make decisions based on small sample size; we are likely to be affetecd by frequent news or events and social media; we overlook logic in favor of a possible story; we think that we understand the past and hence we suffer from hindisght illusion; we overlook statistical reasoing, uncertainty, and risks and favor our gut feelings; we make decisions based on optimal scenario and face the planning falacy; we work harder to avoid loss than to achive gain; and our memory overrides our experience and hence we remember only how the experience ends.

Explaining the root causes for developing an innovative organization like talabat.com or Ali-baba or an innovative nation like Finland or Singapore, requires a statistical mind that looks at the culture of innovation, the ecosystem, and how the innovation index was developed. Also, we need to re-think if all parameters like leadership and knowledge management processes to measure innovation are sufficient and relevant to GCC context. Another bias in thinking is human tendency to replace complex problems with easier problems and avoid the harder questions. For example, why are some start-ups, SMEs and nations are more innovative than others? Comparisons between organizations and nations in GCC requires a statistical mind that avoids biases in judgement and unwarranted optimism. In sum, it is crucial to develop an innovative education that can nurture a statistical mind that is capable to realize human capacity and is sceptical of experts’ opinions.

Ministry announce launch of

Free Internet Services across

the KingdomManama

Batelco, in partnership with the Ministry of

Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, has launched free Wi-Fi hotspots at various locations inside the Kingdom.

The service, following the directives of His Royal Highness the Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, will be available for all citizens and residents and tourists.

Tourist attractions, public facilities such as parks, gardens and coastlines are covered by the project.

While Batelco customers will get automatic Internet

access at the free WiFi locations, non-Batelco customers will have to do that through a specialized web page, Batelco said in a statement.

The service, Batelco said, will soon be available in other key locations across the Kingdom including Prince Khalifa Park, Al Estaqaili park in Riffa, A’ali Walkway, Adhari Park, Tubli Walkway, Al Andalus Park and Al Salmaniya Park.

Commenting on the move, Batelco Chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa stated: “This initiative reiterates Batelco’s support and commitment

towards the Kingdom’s 2030 vision.”

Prime Minister’s directive, Batelco Bahrain CEO Mohamed Bubashait said, aims to strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a leading regional communications hub, attracting further commercial investments and attracting more tourists and visitors to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It is worth noting that several locations already have operational internet services including the Bahrain International Circuit, Seef Mall Muharraq and Seef Mall Seef District, as well as other commercial complexes.

Britain to probe if airlines deliberately split passengersLondon

Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said

yesterday it was beginning a review into airlines’ seating policies, including whether some operators were deliberating splitting up groups of passengers travelling together.

Some customers have complained that they have been seated away from their

friends or family in order to force them to pay extra for allocated seating.

“We will be looking into how airlines decide where to seat passengers that have booked as part of a group and whether any airlines are pro-actively splitting up groups of passengers when, in fact, they could be sat together,” said CAA Chief Executive Andrew

Haines. “We will not hesitate to take any necessary enforcement action should it be required at the end of the review.”

In a survey of passengers from 10 airlines conducted by pollster YouGov released on Saturday, those who flew with Irish low-cost airline Ryanair were most likely to report being separated from their group when not paying more to sit together.

Salvador Meza has been making guitars since he was a boy, but his leathery hands

have never had to churn them out as fast as now -- thanks to the hit movie “Coco.”

Meza, 41, is one of many renowned guitar-makers in the Mexican town of Paracho, which has been producing artfully crafted guitars since the 18th century.

But the sleepy colonial town has never seen a boom like this -- all because of “Coco,” this year’s Golden Globe winner for best animated film and a box office smash that has grossed more than $500 million so far.

Set in Mexico, the movie tells the story of Miguel, a young boy who secretly longs to be a musician but is growing up in a family where music is forbidden.

Fate thrusts into his hands a white guitar incrusted with mother-of-pearl, topped with gold tuning pegs and a stylized black skull.

The skull, like the film itself, is a playful tribute to Mexico’s Day of the Dead, a festival of colorful costumes, decorations and sweets during which, according to tradition, the dead come back to visit the living.

Director Lee Unkrich has called the film a “love letter to Mexico,” and Mexico loves it back: it is the country’s highest-grossing movie of all time.

The animators at Pixar, the studio behind the film, based Miguel’s guitar on a real-life version made by an artisan from Paracho -- and demand for replicas now has the town’s luthiers working in overdrive.

“I usually work out of my home with my wife and a friend. But now, I’ve had to call up my godmother, my nephew, my cousin,” said Meza through the cloud of sawdust in his workshop.

“We’re all going crazy over ‘Coco!’”Since “Coco” had its world premiere in Mexico on October 20, Meza says he has been sleeping three hours a night and has doubled his output from 50 guitars a week to 100.

Paracho, the “guitar capital of Mexico,” makes nearly one million classical guitars

a year, many exported to the United States.

Typically, they are elegant and understated masterpieces of burnished brown wood.

At least, that was the case until the town caught what guitar shop owner Maria Eugenia Gomez calls “Coco fever.”

Now, she says, she can’t keep up with demand for the flashy white guitars.

“If I had 1,000 of them, I’d sell them all,” said Gomez, 76.

- ‘Straight out of a movie’ -The man behind the original “Coco” guitar is German Vazquez, a Paracho native who emigrated to the United States 25 years ago, slipping over the border to chase the American dream.

The state where Paracho is located, Michoacan, was until recent years swept by grisly violence unleashed by the Knights Templar drug cartel. It is among the states with the highest rates of emigration to the US.

After Vazquez crossed the border, he found work, eventually became a US citizen and finally managed to open his own guitar workshop in Los Angeles -- which is where Pixar found him.

Now 64, he reminisces with a hint of nostalgia about his trek across the desert a quarter-century ago.

“It was hard. You arrive with nothing but the clothes on your back, with no money, nothing but your

desire to work,” said Vazquez, a critic of US President Donald Trump’s planned border wall.

He said he sees a little bit of young Miguel in his own life’s story.

“He wants to be a musician, and he searches for a way to make it happen. He fights and fights until he achieves it. I think in that way I’m also like little Miguel... in love with guitars,” he said. “My life is straight out of a movie.” (AFP)

The U.S. Justice Department is seeking “substantial”

Japan’s ‘Insta-gran’ finds fame with wacky selfies

Kumamoto

A madcap Japanese great-grandmother armed with

a camera and an appetite for mischief has shot to fame for taking side-splitting selfies -- many of which appear to put her in harm’s way.

Closing in on her 90th birthday, Kimiko Nishimoto tweaks the nose of fear: she has amassed more than 41,000 followers in just two months since she started regularly posting her hilarious snaps on Instagram.

The goofy photos show the fun-loving pensioner riding a broomstick like Harry Potter or, even more alarmingly, knocked over in an apparent traffic accident.

“I’ve actually never injured myself taking a photo,”

Nishimoto tells in an interview at her home in Kumamoto, western Japan.

“I’m always focusing hard on taking a fun photo so I really don’t think about the danger too much,” she explains.

Nishimoto, who only took up photography aged 72, reveals she quickly became hooked on the hobby after being invited to join a local class.

“I love my camera,” adds the sassy octogenarian, who has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“I even sleep with it by my bedside, just in case. I always have it close.”

A decade later she secured her first solo exhibition -- held in her home town -- but Nishimoto’s recent decision

to showcase snaps of her daredevil stunts on social media has now catapulted her to stardom.

Such is her celebrity now that many fans were shut out of her exhibition at a Tokyo gallery in December as it struggled to cope with the crowds.

“At first I didn’t even know that my photos were that popular,” the former housewife muses with a twinkle in her eye, adding: “It’s not so much that I’m trying to shock people, I just take photos that I find funny. It’s just a bit of fun really.”

Born in 1928 -- the year Emperor Hirohito was enthroned and Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse -- Nishimoto is disarmingly young at heart and

possesses a wicked sense of humour.

She manages her social media accounts herself through her smartphone, while her son helps her to set up some of the shots.

Many of Nishimoto’s photos show her face contorted in mock anguish. In one instance she is shown having seemingly fallen off a bike as a car speeds past, narrowly avoiding catastrophe.

“It’s not like ideas just suddenly pop into my head but wherever I go I think about what it would be fun to dress up as in that place,” she chuckles.

“I just want to try and bring joy to people. Taking photos is the secret of my happiness. I’ll keep doing it for as long as I’m alive.” (AFP)

Dare to be different. It can be so easy to fall into a drill. Sleeping at the same time, wearing the same style, and going about work the same way day after day. Before you know it, you feel like you’re in a rut. The only way to get away from this is to make a decision to break free by doing something unique.

If your lifestyle is considerably different than that of others, resist feeling self-conscience about it today. Try to remember that you chose the life you have for specific reasons. Even if you’ve come to a point where you’re considering a change, there’s no need to feel badly, ashamed, or embarrassed about where you are now.

An enhanced feeling of determination could motivate you today. Finish the things that aren’t complete and make some plans for this evening. Don’t hesitate to take on something that feels complicated or big. Chances are you’ll be able to handle most anything and it will feel great when it’s finished. Enjoy your day by making the most of opportunity.

Feeling the effects of today’s energies? Take heart if this is the case, because the end of the tunnel isn’t as far away as it seems. Do your best to take things one step at a time and see about making some plans for a little fun this evening. Get together with friends or take in a movie.

Consider making some plans for a vacation or short getaway. Looking forward to something fun can make even the toughest of days far easier to handle. You’ll be amazed how much you can manage when there’s an end in plain sight. Your entire attitude can lighten. So take the bull by the horns and create an incentive for yourself.

Don’t judge someone if he or she has a different lifestyle than what you consider to be OK. You probably lean toward the traditional, yet not everyone feels this way about relationships, working, or lifestyle. While it may seem impossible to understand and even frighten you, try not to be too harsh on those you deem odd. You’d be better off using that energy to keep your own life on track.

Friends seeking advice or a shoulder to cry on could be plentiful today. You’re one of best people to give them the support and care they need. Just be sure that you don’t give so much to others that you don’t have anything left for yourself. True friendship is about sharing and the exchange of problems and help. Running yourself down will leave you in a place.

Getting through today shouldn’t pose too big a problem for you. You may feel a huge second wind that can give you the drive and determination to see your chores and projects through. Make some plans for this evening, such as getting together with friends or taking in an event that really intrigues you. Until then, go about your tasks bit by bit.

Try not to let today’s blues get you down. While it’s true that some days can seem to drag on, the busier you are the faster time will pass. Get down to finishing any work still before you and then make plans for tonight. If there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, not only will things seem to speed up but you’ll feel better knowing it’s coming.

Working within boundaries and restrictions could really get to you today. Yours is an independent spirit and your best achievements are often born of doing things your own way. Yet like it or not, we all have to follow guidelines and rules. Do your best to follow suit and finish what needs to be done. Afterward, you may find more freedom to act independently without consequences.

Chances are that you’ll feel upbeat and positive today. Consider sharing this energy with those around you who are feeling less than content. Your attitude can have a profound effect on friends, partners, spouses, and children. Even neighbours and extended family can pick up on your spirit without you even realizing it. Share your optimism with everyone you can today.

Don’t discount your ability to be extremely resourceful if you need to be. If you don’t have everything you need or all of the required information, take time to think. Who can you ask? What places can you access? Who might know where you can find what you need? Rather than panic because the pieces aren’t all there, instead make a list of contacts.

Al Qaeda-linked militants in Syria have downed a

Russian fighter jet, killing its pilot after he ejected from the plane and landed on the ground in the embattled north-western province of Idlib.

The pilot resisted being captured and fired at the militants who then shot and killed him, according to one of the militants and Syrian monitors. The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed the downing of the Su-25 and said the pilot was killed in

fighting with “terrorists”.A report on the ministry’s

Zvezda TV said preliminary information indicated the plane was shot by a portable ground-to-air missile in an area under control of Al Qaeda’s branch in Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the plane was downed on Saturday afternoon local time near the rebel-held town of Sarqeb, which Syrian troops have been trying to take under the cover of Russian airstrikes. (abcnews)

A record-setting Russian spacewalk ended with a

critical antenna in the wrong position Friday outside the International Space Station.

NASA’s Mission Control reported that the antenna was still working. Nevertheless, Russian space officials were convening a special team to see whether further action would be necessary. The antenna is used for communications with Russia’s Mission Control outside Moscow.

The trouble arose toward the end of the more than 8 hour spacewalk — the longest ever by Russians and the fifth longest overall — after Commander Alexander Misurkin and Anton Shkaplerov successfully replaced an electronics box to upgrade the antenna.

The pair watched in dismay as the antenna got hung up on the Russian side

of the complex and could not be extended properly. The antenna — a long boom with a 4-foot dish at the end — had been folded up before the repair work.

Misurkin and Shkaplerov pushed, as flight controllers tried repeatedly, via remote commanding, to rotate the antenna into the right position. Finally, someone shouted in Russian, “It’s moving. It’s in place.”

NASA Mission Control said from Houston that the antenna wound up in a position 180 degrees farther than anticipated.

The spacewalk dragged on so long — lasting 8 hours and 13 minutes — that Misurkin and Shkaplerov ended up surpassing the previous Russian record of 8 hours and 7 minutes, set in 2013. It was supposed to last 6 ½ hours.

“Are you kidding us?” one of them asked when they heard about the record. (AP)

weapon programmes as claimed by the United

Nations report?

North Korea is flouting sanctions by exporting

coal, iron, steel and other banned commodities, earning nearly $200 million in revenue last year, a UN report said Friday.

A UN panel of experts also found evidence of military cooperation by North Korea to develop Syria’s chemical weapons programs and to provide Myanmar with ballistic missiles.

North Korea “continued to export almost all the commodities prohibited in the resolutions, generating nearly $200 million in revenue between January and September 2017,” said the report by the experts.

Coal shipments were delivered to China, Malaysia, South Korea, Russia and Vietnam by ships using “a combination of multiple evasion techniques, routes and deceptive tactics,” said the report.

The Security Council last year adopted a series of resolutions to tighten and expand exports bans aimed at cutting off revenue to North Korea’s military programs.

Seven ships have been barred from ports worldwide for violating UN sanctions with coal and petroleum transfers, but the experts said much more must be done to confront “these rampant illicit activities.”

The panel found that North Korea “is already flouting the most recent resolutions by exploiting global oil supply chains, complicit foreign nationals, offshore company registries, and the international banking system.”

Arming Syria, Myanmar Syria and Myanmar are continuing cooperation with North Korea’s KOMID corporation, the country’s main arms exporter, which is on a UN sanctions blacklist, the report said.

The panel uncovered more than 40 previously unreported shipments from North Korea between 2012 and 2017 to front companies for Syria’s Scientific Studies Research Council, also known as CERS, a key institute for Syria’s chemical program.

The investigations reveal “substantial new evidence”

concerning Pyongyang’s military cooperation with Damascus, including at least three visits by North Korean technicians to Syria in 2016.

A visit by a North Korean technical delegation in August 2016 involved the “transfer of special resistance valves and thermometers known for use in chemical weapons programs,” said the report.

A member-state that was not named told the panel that North Korean “technicians continue to operate at chemical weapons and missile facilities at Barzei, Adra and Hama” in Syria, said the report.

Syria however told the panel that there were no North Korean technicians in its territory and that the only experts it was hosting from the country were involved in sports.

A member-state, which was not named, also notified the panel that Myanmar had received “ballistic missile systems from (North Korea) in addition to a range of conventional weapons, including multiple rocket launches and surface-to air missiles”. (AFP)

Honolulu

A former Hawaii

state worker who sent a

false missile alert last month

said yesterday he’s devastated about

causing panic but was “100 percent

sure” at the time that the attack was real.

The man in his 50s spoke to reporters on the

condition that he not be identified because he fears for his safety after receiving

threats.He says an on-duty call

that came in on Jan. 13 didn’t sound like a drill. However,

state officials say other workers clearly heard the word “exercise”

repeated several times.“Immediately afterward, we

find out it was a drill and I was devastated. I still feel very badly about it,” he said. “I felt sick afterward. It was like a body blow.”

He’s had difficulty eating and sleeping since, he said: “It’s been hell for me the last couple weeks.”

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency fired him after the incident.

The man’s superiors said they knew for years that he had problems performing his job. The worker had mistakenly believed drills for tsunami and fire warnings were actual events, and colleagues were not comfortable working with him, the state said.

H i s s u p e r v i s o r s

counselled him but kept him for a decade in a position that had to be renewed each year.

The ex-worker disputed that, saying he wasn’t aware of any performance problems.

While starting a Saturday shift at the emergency operations center in a former bunker in Honolulu’s Diamond Head crater on Jan. 13, the man said, a co-worker took a phone call over the U.S. Pacific Command secure line that sounded like a real warning, he said.

“When the phone call came in, someone picked up the receiver instead of hitting speaker phone so that everyone could hear the message,” he said.

The man said he didn’t hear the beginning of the message that said, “exercise, exercise, exercise.”

“I heard the part, ‘this is not a drill,’” he said. “I didn’t hear exercise at all in the message or from my co-workers.”

Federal and state reports say the agency had a vague checklist for missile alerts, allowing workers to interpret the steps they should follow differently. Managers didn’t require a second person to sign off on alerts before they were sent, and the agency lacked any preparation on how to correct a false warning.

Those details emerged Tuesday in reports on investigations about how the agency mistakenly blasted cellphones and broadcast stations with the missile warning.

It took nearly 40 minutes for the agency to figure out a way to retract the false alert on the same platforms it was sent to.

“ T h e

protocols were not in place. It was a sense of urgency to put it in place as soon as possible. But those protocols were not developed to the point they should have,” retired Brig. Gen. Bruce Oliveira, who wrote the report on Hawaii’s internal investigation, said at a news conference.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Administrator Vern Miyagi resigned as the reports were released. Officials revealed that the employee who sent the alert was fired Jan. 26. The state did not name him.

The agency’s executive officer, Toby Clairmont, said Wednesday that he stepped down because it was clear action would be taken against agency leaders after the alert.

Another employee was being suspended without pay, officials said.

The incident “shines a light” on the state’s system failures, the man who sent the alert said, adding that he believes the federal government should handle such alerts.

Testing of the alert system began in November and protocols were constantly changing, he said. “As far as our level of training was concerned, I think it was inadequate,” he said.

Hawaii state Department of Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Charles Anthony declined to comment on what the former worker said.

Officials said the man refused to cooperate with state or federal investigations beyond providing a written statement. He wasn’t trying to impede any investigations, he said: “There really wasn’t anything

else to say.” (AP)

India lift U-19 World CupMount Maunganui, New Zealand

India lifted a record fourth U-19 World Cup trophy after an eight-wicket rout of Australia

in the final yesterday, underlining their dominant run in the tournament and giving Rahul Dravid the biggest success of his coaching career.

As it has been the case through out the tournament, India had all their bases covered with bowlers bouncing back to dismiss Australia for 216 from 183 for four at one stage.

The highly-rated batting, barring a minor blip, completed the job with conviction as India chased down the modest target in 38.5 overs.

India’s Manjot Kalra emerged as the man for big occasion, scoring a sublime 101 not out off 102 balls and anchoring the innings after the loss of skipper Prithvi Shaw and team’s leading scorer in the tournament, Shubman Gil.

With a fourth crown, India surpassed Australia in the race of most U-19 World Cup titles. Prior to the final, India and Australia were locked at three titles each.

The team’s performance was also a fitting tribute to coach Dravid, who finally got his hands on a World Cup trophy. Under Dravid, the side had finished runner-up in the 2016 edition in Bangladesh.

India’s previous title came in Australia six years ago when the Unmukt Chand-led team beat the hosts in the final.

The Virat Kohli-led side was victorious in 2008 and Mohammed Kaif was captain when India triumphed way back in 2000.

In the current edition, India were the overwhelming favourites and they played like one, dishing out dominant performances one after the other. (PTI)

BRIEF SCOREIndia Under-19 217 for 2 (Kalra 101*, Desai 47*, Gill 31) beat Australia Under-19 216 all out (Merlo 76, Uppal 34, Anukul 2-32, Shiva Singh 2-36) by eight wickets

Roshen Silva completed an assured hundred, Dinesh Chandimal a measured 87 and Niroshan Dickwella a rapid 62, but it was Sri Lanka’s spinners who truly breathed life into the game.

Finding turn with the almost-new ball, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan and Rangana Herath struck once each in the final 12 overs of the day.

With both Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal among those dismissed, the Bangladesh middle order is now charged with carrying them to safety on day five. They are still 119 runs behind.

The late wickets came after the hosts had begun their second innings with such confidence.

Tamim Iqbal was not quite as belligerent as he had been in the first innings, but he was nevertheless positive, stroking Herath through

midwicket early in his innings, before delectably flicking Suranga Lakmal through square leg in the fourth over.

Sri Lanka raised some good lbw shouts, but batting still appeared a relatively uncomplicated exercise. Imrul Kayes was quieter than Tamim, but hardly seemed to be struggling.

It was in the over that Imrul was dismissed that the vibe changed. Tamim was beaten twice by turning Dilruwan Perera deliveries before he finally managed to get himself off strike off the fifth ball.

Imrul then somehow managed to get the toe-end of his bat to an attempted ramp shot, and the ball looped out towards the square leg fielder, who completed an easy take.

The remaining 11.5 overs were tense; only two boundaries were struck before stumps. Tamim was largely to blame for his dismissal - prodding at a Sandakan ball that was not threatening the stumps, only to send a thin edge to the wicketkeeper. Mushfiqur, however, can consider himself very unlucky. (espncricinfo)

Sydney

Power hitters Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell propelled

Australia to a convincing seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first tri-series Twenty20 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday.

Lynn and Maxwell shared in a scorching 77-run stand from just 53 balls to steer Australia to the rain-reduced total of 95 from 15 overs with 21 balls to spare.

Despite a top-order wobble, in which captain David Warner and the debutant D’Arcy Short fell inside the first three overs,

the belligerent power of Lynn and Maxwell swamped the Kiwi bowling attack.

Australia’s victory was earlier set up by towering paceman Billy Stanlake whose fierce pace justified Warner’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss. (AFP)BRIEF SCORE

Kasatkina beaten by

Mladenovic

St. Petersburg Open

Saint Petersburg

Local favourite Daria Kasatkina was prevented

from appearing in the final of her home event after Kristina Mladenovic fought back from a set down to continue her defence of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy.

No Russian woman has ever reached the final of the

St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy and many believed that 20-year-old Kasatkina had every chance of changing that on Saturday, especially after she defeated world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals on Friday.

However, it wasn’t to be as France’s Mladenovic showed great courage to recover and

triumph 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.As per usual, Kasatkina

varied her game with artistic creativity and Mladenovic consequently struggled to find any rhythm in the face of some unusual slice and spin shots.

After the first set though, she got used to Kasatkina’s style of play and never looked

back once she seized the momentum. Mladenovic’s forehand was the weapon that did the most damage.

Mladenovic will contest her first WTA final since May last year against Petra Kvitova, who beat Julia Görges in a three-set marathon earlier on Saturday. (foxsportsasia)

Murray, Inglot lose doubles

Davis Cup

London

Great Britain trail 2-1 in their Davis Cup World Group tie in Spain after Jamie Murray and

Dominic Inglot were beaten in the doubles by Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez.

Murray and Inglot were second best throughout, losing 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

Britain must win both reverse singles rubbers on Sunday to be victorious in the tie on clay in Marbella.

Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady are due to play for GB but captain Leon Smith can select Kyle Edmund if he is fit.

The Australian Open semi-finalist was not chosen for Friday’s singles because of a hip injury.

Norrie is scheduled to play Albert Ramos-Vinolas before Broady faces Roberto Bautista Agut.

“The Spanish guys played an awful lot better than ours, it’s as simple as that,” Smith said.

“The court definitely favoured them but they also played well. We would have needed to make an awful lot more returns to try and make some inroads into their service games, but they were holding so quickly and we never really got any momentum.”

Asked whether Edmund would play on Sunday, he added: “He’ll have another practice session this evening on the match court, play some points for an extended period of time and after that we’ll have a good conversation with him. (BBC)

Djoker provide injury update London

Novak Djokovic says he has had a “small medical

intervention” on a persistent elbow injury and is “on the good road now to full recovery”.

The former world number one returned after six months out when he played at the Australian Open in January.

He lost to unseeded South Korean Chung Hyeon in the last 16 and had treatment on his right elbow during the match.

“It’s quite a journey this one, I have to say. I’m learning a lot and for that I’m grateful,” said Djokovic, 30.

“I’ve always taken care of my

body and looked for the most natural ways to heal, and my body has rewarded me with some incredible years on tour.

“I am super positive and excited to follow my recovery through so I can come back to the place I love the most. The court.”

Before Melbourne, the Serb, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, had not played since retiring against Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last July.

“I’ve been carrying this injury for the past two years, and during this time I’ve been seeing many doctors,” said Djokovic. (BBC)

Leopardstown

Supasundae (8-1) got the better of former Cheltenham

Festival winner Faugheen in a thrilling Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

The Willie Mullins-trained Faugheen had come into the race with plenty to prove after being pulled up last time out.

The victor, ridden by Robbie Power and trained by Jessica

Harrington, ran over three

miles in his last race. But he showed plenty of speed

over two miles, challenging Faugheen and overhauling the 9-10 favourite.

Faugheen, with Paul Townend on board in place of the injured Ruby Walsh, had gone out into the lead from the start but Supasundae kept tabs on his rival.

Turning for home, the pair seemed set to fight it out. However, the pace, which had

been a feature of Faugheen’s performance in the build-up to the 2015 Cheltenham Champion Hurdle win, was not as evident as before. Although Faugheen jumped the last two hurdles solidly, Supasundae started to pull away and won by two and a quarter lengths.

“Coming here we wanted this to be a nice prep run for Cheltenham,” said Harrington afterwards. (BBC)

Lake Mountain, Australia

Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott) looks set for overall

victory at the Herald Sun Tour after a brilliant solo attack delivered him to the win on the summit finish to Lake Mountain.

The only rider in the race with a Grand Tour podium to his name, Chaves was the favourite for the stage, but his form remained uncertain after a disappointing 2017 season disrupted by a knee injury.

However Chaves has clearly enjoyed a good off-season, as he displayed scintillating early-season form by attacking at the base of the finishing climb to Lake Mountain, crossing the line 42 seconds ahead of the impressive Alexander Evans (Modius-BridgeLane) with the main group of chasers including defending champion Damien Howson (Mitchelton-Scott) at 1-09.

With the race starting from the Mitchelton Winery a Mitchelton-Scott victory always seemed in the stars but the WorldTour team didn’t have any riders represented in the 10-rider breakaway which got away soon after the start.

In the move were Matt Ross (KordaMentha-Australia), Etienne Van Empel (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Edmund Bradbury (JLT Condor), Brad Evans (Mobius BridgeLane), Steele von Hoff (Bennelong SwissWellness), Nicholas Reddish (Oliver’s Real Food Racing), Ashley Mackay (Australian Cycling Academy), Jonathan Noble (Brisbane Continental), Kane Richards and Alexander Ray (McDonalds-Down Under).

The long 218km stage saw the break allowed a maximum lead of more than seven minutes. However with Mitchelton-Scott and Trek-Segafredo controlling the front of the bunch, that was quickly brought down as the race neared its conclusion, with the front group eventually caught on the approach to the finishing climb. Man Utd sink Huddersfield

Sanchez nets first goal for Manchester United

Manchester

Alexis Sanchez’s first goal for Manchester United wrapped up

a 2-0 victory against Huddersfield on a day when the clubs came together to remember those who lost their lives in the Munich air disaster.

Tuesday is the 60th anniversary of the tragedy which claimed 23 lives, including eight of the players, as Sir Matt Busby’s side returned from a European Cup match at Red Star Belgrade.

Silence fell upon Old Trafford as those lost were remembered ahead of a match that United won, with goals from Romelu Lukaku and home debutant Sanchez sealing the victory against David Wagner’s Terriers.

Huddersfield struggled to create clear-cut chances in their first league trip to Old Trafford since March 1972 but dug deep in the first half to frustrate the hosts, who claimed a penalty when Terence Kongolo poleaxed Scott McTominay.

United were struggling for a creative spark but went up a gear after half-time, going ahead within 10 minutes of the restart when Lukaku smartly turned home a Juan Mata cross.

Sanchez won a penalty and saw it saved, only to turn home the rebound on his Old Trafford debut as United bounced back from the midweek loss at Tottenham, extending Huddersfield’s winless Premier League run to an eighth match.

United showed spirit to break down the visitors on a day when

the club remembered those killed so tragically in 1958.

Hundreds of fans congregated under the Munich plaque to pay their respects outside Old Trafford. When inside, they received a commemorative pack containing a book telling the story of the disaster along with a complimentary programme and letter from Ed Woodward.

United started the match on the front foot and Jesse Lingard was soon racing through, only to fire straight at Jonas Lossl. Chris Smalling got away a tame header as the Terriers continued to be starved of possession.

Town’s players were making their presence felt, though, and the Old Trafford faithful were up in arms as not only was McTominay forcibly bundled over by Kongolo but referee Stuart Attwell did not point to the spot.

Town fans were also growing irritated with the officials, but Philip Billing was walking a fine line with some of his challenges - and Rajiv van La Parra embarrassed himself by miraculously returning to his feet having feigned injury.

Sanchez went down in the box claiming a penalty shortly after Lossl denied him a fine goal from the edge of the box, but United were lacking a spark and Huddersfield were only creating half-chances in a goalless first half.

Mourinho did not make any half-time changes, but his players immediately looked sharper. (PA Sport)
