5

Eight Over Eighty is the largest fundraising event held on behalf of Jewish Senior Life. At this annual event, we honor and recognize eight distinguished older adults, all over eighty years, who have demonstrated dedication throughout their lifetimes to the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World.

All funds raised from this event benefit the Quality of Life Fund at JSL, providing subsidy for those in need for their kosher meals and other essential supports. The Quality of Life Fund also enables health and wellness programs including exercise, yoga, meditation, massage; Shabbat flowers, outings and bus trips, a slate of weekly professional musical entertainers, social gatherings and seasonal holiday parties throughout the year, along with supplies needed to complete and enhance these programs for our residents on both our Oak Park and West Bloomfield campuses.

Over 40 nominations for our distinguished honorees came from all over the community and were selected by a confidential panel of judges. Over the last 27 years, we have honored over 200 older adults as the recipients of the Tikkun Olam Award. We stand on their shoulders in gratitude to these special people who have dedicated their lives to making a difference for us all.

HonoreeLINDA BRODSKYLinda Brodsky was born on June 13, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. Her grandparents and father immigrated from Russia, and her mother was born in Boston, Massachusetts. From the time she was little, Linda was a member of Temple Israel. Temple Israel and religion have always played big roles in her life. Linda’s other significant childhood memories are the summers on Lake Erie, where she especially loved to swim. Linda has always been an active person, and to this day, she enjoys swimming and bike riding.

Linda grew up and immersed herself in Judaism and being involved in Temple. She went to Temple Israel for Hebrew School and has been a lifelong Jewish learner. In college, Linda majored in Social Studies, and minored in Physical Education, starting at the University of Michigan, and ultimately graduating from Wayne State University. Linda applied her background and education to becoming a religious school teacher. She taught several different classes, including Judaic studies and the Holocaust. I had the honor of being Linda’s student in both classes at Temple Israel. These were two of my favorite classes when I was attending Sunday and Monday night school, because Mrs. Brodsky has a very special way of teaching that makes each class a special experience. She also hands out cookies after class, so that is a bonus too.

In addition to everything she does at Temple Israel and in the religious school, Linda also is a regular volunteer at the Holocaust Memorial Center and the Friendship Circle. One of her favorite parts about volunteering at the Friendship Circle is that she gets to take care of the animals and show them to all of the people that come into the building.

When it comes to Jewish holidays Linda has two clear-cut favorites in Chanukah and Passover. Her most memorable vacation was her trip to Israel. One thing she would love to do if she had the chance would be to visit her grandmother’s hometown in Russia. That is one trip she has wanted to take for a very long time.

Beyond Linda’s love for, and active participation in Judaism and the Jewish community, nothing is more important to Linda than her family. Remembering her husband, Easton, she recalls his military service. Although Linda never served in the military herself, because her husband was in the army, Linda respects every man and woman in the service. She is aware of the sacrifice it takes to serve our country.

The most important people in her life today are her children, grandchildren, and great granddaughter. Not only was Mrs. Brodsky my teacher, but she is also a lifelong friend of my Grandma. Every time I go to my Grandma’s house the phone rings and its usually Mrs. Brodsky calling.

Looking back on her life, Linda recalls the event that shaped her. Her ninth-grade confirmation at Temple Israel brought out her passion for Judaism and was a beautiful moment in her life. One quote she lives by is to, “Be kind to each other, and treat everyone the way you want to be treated.” It was an absolute honor to spend time interviewing Tikkun Olam Awardee, Mrs. Linda Brodsky.

HonoreeEMERY GROSINGERWhen I logged into my Zoom interview call with Emery Grosinger, little did I know how much I would learn from this amazing man. As an 8 Over 80 Honoree, I knew that Mr. Grosinger was well regarded, but little did I know the impact he would have on me, and how lucky I was to have been chosen to share his story.

Currently residing in Bloomfield Hills, Mr. Grosinger has been married to his wife Roberta for almost 58 years. They have two married children, and five grandchildren. For the past 50 years, he and his family have been members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Mr. Grosinger supports the Holocaust Center and other Jewish causes in Michigan and Israel including Jewish Federation, Jewish War Veterans, and the American Jewish Committee.

Born in 1932 in Michaels Valley, Romania, Mr. Grosinger grew up in an Orthodox Jewish community with his parents and two brothers. Ironically though, his family was not Orthodox. When he was ready to start middle school, his parents “shipped” him to a school in a larger city. However, in the spring of 1944, during his first year there, he was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Due to these disruptions, Mr. Grosinger described his education as “hit or miss.”

Mr. Grosinger stressed that “America is the greatest country in the world.” When I asked him why, he told me the story of his journey to become an American citizen. Of all the stories he shared, this stood out as the most profound and in his eyes, what made him the person he is today.

About 73 years ago, a few years after he was liberated from Birkenau, Emery and his older brother decided to go to America because they had relatives here. They secured a six-week visa. After their visit, his brother left for Peru, but Emery took his chances and stayed. When he became old enough, he wanted to join the Armed Forces, but they would not take him because he was in the country with an expired visa. He volunteered for the draft and started basic training in Fort Knox, Kentucky. While there, he filled out necessary paperwork to receive his U.S. citizenship which he eventually received after two years while stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. Mr. Grosinger told me, while holding back tears, “I finally received my American citizenship. This was the highlight of my life.”

I asked Mr. Grosinger why he thinks he was selected as an 8 Over 80 Honoree. He chuckled and said, “pure luck.” Mr. Grosinger stressed that the decisions he made by coming to and staying in America while being open to accepting the unknown is something that very few people can endure. He took risks, joined the Army, and became an official American Citizen. Of all the stories he shared with me, becoming a citizen was the most monumental event which propelled him into the life he cherishes today. This amazing story taught me an important life lesson that I believe everyone should follow - never take anything for granted. If you take chances and respect others around you, everything will fall into place. Mr. Grosinger’s patience, determination, and humbleness, got him to be the remarkable person he is today.

HonoreeFAYE JACOBSAs I logged onto the zoom meeting to meet Mrs. Jacobs, I knew she was one of a kind. She greeted me with a big smile across her face and was so excited to be an 8 over 80 honoree. I was immediately blown away by her high energy and kind soul at the age of 96. Faye is a very social person; she loves to be with people and enjoys helping others. She is committed to doing her part to make a difference in her community and to make the world a better place. She is family oriented and loves spending time with friends, cooking, playing bridge, golfing, dancing, and helping in the community.

Growing up, Faye always loved attending Hebrew School. She was born in Rochester, New York and was valedictorian of her Hebrew School at only 11 years old. Her brother then moved to Detroit, seeking em-ployment, and brought the entire family to Michigan to live with him. She now belongs to Congregation Beth Shalom and was the social director of the Mr. and Mrs. Club where she planned events for members of the group. She met so many new friends at Beth Shalom and continues to keep in touch with many of the Rabbis and congregants. She looks forward to being able to go back to volunteering again soon. Before the pandemic, she used to dance at Fleischman, doing her part to bring smiles to the community.

Faye has a very large place in her heart for her family and friends. She was married for 65 years to the love of her life, Jerry. They met through dancing and she will always have special memories associated with dancing. Along with her own relationship, she is proud to call herself a “matchmaker” after connecting 7 couples. This special ability demonstrates her passion and appreciation for love. She has 3 children and even through the pandemic, Faye continues to try to keep in contact with her family members regularly. She speaks to her loved ones through Zoom and invites them to her patio. The strong connection that she has to her family has been getting her through this virus.

One of Faye’s proudest accomplishments was working as a secretary for the principal at Bussey Preschool in Southfield, Michigan for 18 years. Getting to spend time with young children at this school was very rewarding for her. She loved her job very much and had to handle many responsibilities and logistics. She also spends her time volunteering as the receptionist at the Karmanos Cancer Center. For the last 12 years, Faye has enjoyed greeting people as they came in and escorting them to their mammograms. She had also worked for the assets department of the National Guard as a secretary. Surrounded by only men, she was inspired by the work they were doing and defied cultural norms by being the only woman there.

Listening to Faye’s story has inspired me to do as much as I can to help others and do my part in making the world a better place. She spreads so much hope and positivity to the world and is one of the nicest and most social people I have ever met. I am honored to have gotten the opportunity to meet Faye and I am so happy for her role in Eight Over Eighty.

HonoreeSYE LINOVITZIt was an honor to meet Seymour Linovitz, an intelligent, kind man with lots of wisdom to share. Sye was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there until he was about eighteen, when his family moved to Oak Park. He attended Wayne State University, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Sye and his wife, Francine, have been married for almost 55 years. They raised their children, in Southfield and West Bloomfield. Sye’s family now includes five grandchildren.

Of his early years in Detroit, Sye said ecstatically, “Oh my childhood was great, I loved it.” His great memories include playing baseball with the other kids from his neighborhood, attending summer camp, and joining an AZA youth group chapter. As a child, and still today, Sye appreciates the cultural aspects of Judaism, especially celebrating holidays with friends and family.

Sye first became interested in engineering as a young teenager, when he came across a few books on physics and thermodynamics at his uncle’s house. After graduating college, Sye briefly worked for a neighbor, and then moved on to Ford Motor Company, where he remained for 45 years. He really liked his time at Ford and said that it was a great fit for him.

Sye has benefitted from facing challenges. Early in his career, while working for his neighbor’s small company, Sye was given the task to design a machine that would cycle around and make stops at certain locations. When it came time to test the machine, he plugged it in, it cycled for a few seconds, and then grease spilled out all over the floor. Even though the machine did not work on the first try, he did not let this hinder his spirit, and instead was glad that he was able to use this as a learning opportunity.

After retiring from Ford in 2008, Sye worked for a consulting company. He fully retired in 2012. At the suggestion of an old friend, Sye trained to become a docent at the Holocaust Memorial Center. He gives tours to people of all ages, but especially appreciates the opportunity to speak to young people. Sye wants to do his part in the fight against evil and antisemitism. He describes his work at the Holocaust Center as both his calling and his purpose. He says that if he is able to make an impression on even just a few people, he has achieved his goal of participating in Tikkun Olam, which is repairing the world.

When I asked him to reflect on some of the best lessons he has learned from his life, he talked about confidence, failure, and urgency. He says that it is important for people to build up confidence so that they can complete their projects with a high degree of intensity. He also talked about failure, and how it is inevitable. But the important part to remember, he told me, is that you cannot let it absorb your life. You need to learn from it and do better next time. And finally, he talked about urgency. He wishes that he would be able to go back in time and procrastinate less, because he said that procrastination never once helped him. He also wanted to make sure that future generations know the importance of urgency. He says that things only get harder the longer you wait to start them.

By his words, and his example, Sye Linovitz has taught invaluable lessons to his family and community.

HonoreeSY MANELLOSeymour “Sy” Manello was born in 1937 in Youngstown, Ohio. His family also lived in Wichita, Kansas and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. When Sy was just fourteen, his father passed away, and his mother moved the family, including Sy’s older brother, to Detroit.

As the child of Polish immigrants (my ancestry is also from Poland), including his father, who was a Conservative Rabbi, Sy grew up steeped in Jewish tradition. One of his favorite childhood memories occurred prior to the Passover Seder, when he was given the job to take out the dishes which were stored in large wooden barrels.

Sy always loved English and Drama, participating in his high school’s Senior Play, and then earning a BA in English and Public Speaking at the University of Michigan. Following college, while working on a master’s degree, Sy began his teaching career, first at the High School of Commerce, and then Cody High School. An amazing storyteller, Sy recalls his first experience as a Drama teacher. The High School of Commerce didn’t have their own auditorium, so they had to go across the connector to Cass Tech to use theirs. The Cass auditorium was being used by the band, so Sy’s play was moved to the gymnasium. When they set up the scenery, they were not allowed to put nails into the gym floor. At the end of the play, when the cast went on stage to bow, all the scenery fell down. Sy told me this was a very funny experience for him and that he enjoyed it.

After 30 years of teaching high school, Sy began a second 30+ year career, working for The Detroit Jewish News, first as a proofreader, and working his way up to being an editorial assistant. His specialty is processing all lifecycle items: births, bar/bat mitzvahs, engagements, weddings, and, sadly, obituaries. He also writes a humorous monthly column.

Sy has been married to his wife, Pearl, for 60 years, and has two children and four grandchildren. He takes great pride in his grandchildren’s lives and accomplishments.

Sy is an active member of B’nai Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield. He was very involved before Covid-19, and currently attends zoom services. He enjoys it there because it is a small synagogue, and he gets to know the people and rabbis very well gaining a sense of family and belonging.

Sy told me he was proud of his teaching career, and work at the Jewish News. He is also delighted to be a community volunteer - helping at Yad Ezra and reading books to senior citizens at JSL. He is grateful that his career was based around the skills he learned in high school and college. I asked him how he did all this work, from his teaching career to volunteering. He told me that “If you enjoy what you’re doing, it really isn’t work.” He also told me his code to live by: humor. it was important to Sy to “develop and maintain a sense of humor; it can really help you through situations.” He feels that he has accomplished everything he wanted to in his life, and that he is satisfied with what he has done. Sy taught me that I should enjoy life, and laugh my way through it, and that really made me happy. It truly was an honor to interview Sy, and I recognize his amazing contributions to the community.

HonoreeJANET MOSESWhen I first met the wonderful Janet Moses, I was instantly reminded of the color, yellow. Just like the color, Janet engulfs you with her amazing beauty and shine. The more I got to know Janet, the more I realized why she was chosen as an 8 Over 80 honoree.

Born on April 1, 1940, Janet grew up in Detroit with her parents and one older sister. Her father worked in the family’s Safe Company, and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. Janet smiles when talking about her early years and feels so fortunate to have had such a great childhood. Janet met her future husband, Henry, when she was seven years old, and he was ten. Their families knew each other, but Janet and Henry did not start dating until Janet was in college. They have been married for almost 60 years and have two children and four grandchildren.

At the age of 16, Janet began working with children. She attended Northwestern University, and originally majored in Speech and Theater, ultimately switching her major to English, and becoming a teacher. After graduation, Janet went to work at Temple Beth El religious high school, creating all different kinds of curricula. Janet took a break from teaching to raise her children, and eventually she went back to work in a school in the inner city for eight years. There, she taught people whose other option was jail, or those who could not receive any other type of education.

One day, Janet was outside and saw her neighbor. Her neighbor’s children attended Akiva (now Farber) Day School, and she asked Janet if she would be willing to interview for a teaching position at the school. Janet immediately said yes. Janet worked at Akiva as the head of the English department from 1972 until 1982. After working at Akiva, Janet started a Family Education program at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy, Michigan. This program began because of Janet’s son. He was friendly with the rabbi, who wanted to start a religious school, and he told his mother to apply for the job. And well, Janet got the job.

Tikkun Olam was an important aspect in Janet’s house growing up. Her parents taught her to always teach by example and give back to the community in some way. Janet has volunteered almost her entire life. She has tutored, supported the Jewish Federation, and worked with senior citizens. Not only was volunteering an important aspect in Janet’s perspective of Tikkun Olam, but it is the bigger picture of being able to make changes and differences in the world, even if they are small changes, especially when it comes to helping the less fortunate.

For the past few years, Janet has attended the 8 Over 80 events. She remembers seeing people being honored and mentioning how amazing they were in their lifetime. Janet said that she feels so honored to be a part of this incredible event and opportunity.

Janet’s closing message to me was, “Never forget to say I love you.” To most people, this might seem obvious. But just because people know these words, does not mean that they follow through with it. So, for Janet, go tell that person you love them, it is never too late.

HonoreeSAUL SAULSONSaul Saulson tells great stories about his life. He is a model citizen who always cares for others. In answer to each question I asked of him, Saul always came back to emphasize caring for others, his community, and the entire world.

Born and raised in Detroit, Saul spoke about the influence his father had on him. He taught him to take an interest in every person he met, and to have a positive outlook on life. Tragically, Saul’s father and uncle passed away in a car accident two months before his bar mitzvah.

Saul’s response to challenging circumstances, then and now, would always be to focus on how he can be of help to others. One of his happiest memories as a young man is how he helped build a system for his grandmother to ring a bell when she needed assistance.

Family is, and has always been, the most important part of Saul’s life. He constantly described his family, wife, Marjorie, his children, and grandchildren, as “wonderful.” He is close to his children, in particular his son, helping Saul recall the bond shared with his own father years ago. His daughter’s special visits bring him joy.

Saul helped others through his work. He began his career as a hospital pharmacist. At that job, Saul accomplished many great things, the first one being that he helped develop a product that would save babies from infection. The other big product that Saul helped develop treated people who overdosed or were poisoned. These two accomplishments stand out in a big way because they show how much Saul cares for others. Developing these two products saved many lives, and the product used for treating overdoses and poison is still used to this day. In addition to creating helpful, lifesaving products, Saul did not care when others copied his work. He said that “the most important thing was that it was a more effective way to treat overdoses or poisonings.” Rather than wanting all the credit and reward for his creation, Saul only cared that it was being used correctly to save lives. This is a great lesson that a lot of people could learn from. Later in life, Saul continues to help others by speaking to seniors, encouraging them to adjust to retirement.

Saul Saulson is a model for having a positive attitude. On the surface, this seems like an obvious thing for people to do. However, for Saul, it would be understandable if he weren’t so positive. Facing the tragic death of his father and uncle early in his life, then having his first wife pass away just two years after marrying, Saul nonetheless maintained his positive attitude. He teaches all of us that we can do the same, no matter what challenges we face.

One final thing that resonated for me, Saul left me with a life lesson. He told me that you should surround yourself with people who are honest and good-hearted. What stuck with me was this comment in combination with how he always tried to take an interest in the people he met. This leads to so many great friendships as well as being able to help so many people. From all this, it is obvious to me that Saul is incredibly deserving of the Tikkun Olam Award, exemplified by his actions throughout his life.

HonoreeDR. LOU SOVERINSKYUpon meeting Dr. Louis Soverinsky, he passed a message along to me from a friend who stated, things are beshert. Little did I know that the opportunity to interview Dr. Soverinsky would turn out to be a beshert moment.

Lou was born in Detroit and grew up there as well. His father immigrated to America from Russia at the age of 11 and his mother was a Detroit native. Lou lived in a tight-knit community and was never too far from his family members. His household kept Jewish traditions alive by keeping kosher, celebrating every holiday as a family, and having Shabbat dinners on Friday nights. He described fond memories of spending time with his extended family as if they were a part of his immediate family. Lou’s parents led by example and taught him “a person is measured by what he does and that indicates what they are about.”

Lou studied at the University of Detroit, a Catholic University. About 90 Jewish kids went there at the time and together, they formed a Jewish fraternity called Phi Sigma Delta, where Lou would become the Vice President. They shared the rituals of the Soverinsky household and held services and dinners every Shabbat. After graduating, Lou attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa, where he became a family practitioner and practiced for about 57 years. At the end of the day, he claimed, “medicine is not about how smart the student is, but how well the doctor is able to relate to their patients.” Dr. Soverinsky mentioned that he could recall the names of most of his patients and continues to stay in touch by phone occasionally.

One summer at his lake house, Dr. Soverinsky met his first wife, Marilyn, who was the mother of their four children. Sadly, Marilyn passed away at a young age but Dr. Soverinsky was fortunate to meet another amazing woman, Sally, whom he married. Together, they have twelve grandchildren and two great-grand-children. He has something unique to say about all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and tries to lead by example, as his parents did with him.

Dr. Soverinsky is passionate about music and volunteering in our community. He once put on a play at Congregation Shaarey Zedek and starred in the main role. He also loves to write song lyrics. In 2019, he won the Volunteer of the Year Award at Fleischman Residence, which hangs over his desk. Not only does he volunteer at Fleischman, but he also works as a doctor in the Gary Bernstein Free Clinic. Additionally, Dr. Soverinsky served as Vice President of the Osteopathic Medicine Division of the Jewish Federation. He also supports AIPAC. The message of Tikkun Olam was displayed to him from a very young age, and he implements it as much as he can into his everyday life. Dr. Soverinsky and his eldest daughter founded B’nai Israel Synagogue of West Bloomfield together, which he is very involved and passionate about. At the end of our conversation, when I admired and thanked Dr. Soverinsky for being the kind-hearted person he is, he told me that validation is life’s greatest gift. I could not be more grateful for the experience of meeting and listening to Dr. Soverinsky share his story. It truly was a beshert moment.
