Meet The Candidate:Kimberly YeeOngoing Series On CandidatesBy San Tan Times StaffContinued from page 1

Our “Get To Know Your Candidate” se-ries continues. This issue San Tan Times highlights Republican candidate for Treasurer Kimberly Yee. She is going up against Democratic candidate Mark Manoil. As we have done throughout this process, we will highlight both par-ty candidates for each position that is up for election. We will be highlighting Mark Manoil in Wednesday’s edition of San Tan Times.

San Tan Times likes to provide infor-mation straight from the candidate and allow our readers to decide if this can-didate is right for them. Unfortunately, Yee does not hit upon any platform ideas or issues that she will address if she is elected. What she offers is an extensive “About Kimberly.”

About Kimberly YeeArizona Roots, Homegrown Leader-shipKimberly Yee is a native of Phoenix, Arizo-na, and was born and raised in the 20th Leg-islative District, the area she has represented in the Arizona Legislature since 2010. She currently serves as the Arizona Senate Ma-jority Leader and was elected to this leader-ship position by her Republican colleagues. Senator Yee is the second woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader since U.S. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor served the position in the Arizona Senate in 1973. Kimberly Yee is the first Asian American woman elected to serve in the Arizona Legislature in the state’s history.

Arizona TrailblazerSenator Yee proudly represented Arizona as a featured speaker on the stage during the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleve-land, Ohio. Additionally, the Republican National Committee named Senator Yee a “Rising Star” at the 2014 Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. and she has been de-scribed by the RNC as a leader who will have Continued on page 16

Avoiding Hand In-juries At TailgatesStaying Safe During Football PartiesBy Banner HealthContinued from page 1

Football season is officially in full swing bringing back the fun of viewing parties and tailgate festivities. What may be a time of great eagerness cheering on fa-vorited teams to make that third down completion pass, the excitement can, unfortunately, be a distraction leading many folks to urgent care or in worst scenarios, even to the emergency depart-ment.

Dr. Tanay Amin, an orthopedic and hand surgeon at Banner Boswell and Del E. Webb Medical Center is sharing his insight on how to prevent hand injuries this football season:

• If you’re prepping that touchdown worthy salsa, guacamole, or tasty dip, use a stabilizer or even your opposite hand when using a mixing bowl. If the blades do end up getting jammed, do not use your hands to unjam it. This could potentially lead to the blades recoiling and nothing is messier than a severe hand injury thanks to a mixing bowl.

• It wouldn’t be a game day celebration without some French fries and chicken wings. If you’re handling food that in-volves deep frying, make sure the oil is set to a standard temperature to avoid any oil splatter that could potentially lead to a burn.Continued on page 15

Teen Lifeline Visits Poston ButteResources And Information Provided During Suicide Awareness WeekBy San Tan Times Staff

Last week, during Suicide Awareness Week, Teen Lifeline came out to Poston Butte High School to provide resources and information to students.

Teen Lifeline originated back in 1986 and formed after a movie, Surviving staring Molly Ringwald, aired on prime time network television in 1985. The movie was quite controversial because it was the first time teen suicide had been por-trayed in such a public way. The movie made the cover of People Magazine and was instrumental in beginning public conversations about teen suicide. As a result, mental health agencies began to look at the problem of teen suicide. It was then discovered that Arizona’s teen suicide rate was double the national aver-age. Arizona ranked second in the nation for the rate of teen suicide.

Teen Lifeline was developed as an inno-vative solution to address teen suicide in

the Phoenix area.

Teen Lifeline ProgramsThe Hotline• At Teen Lifeline, teens can talk to

someone their own age who under-stand what they are going through because they have gone through it too. This is not an advice hotline. Teen Lifeline is a place where teens can help empower other teens to help themselves.

Life Skills Development• The Crisis Hotline would not be pos-

sible without the Life Skills Develop-ment program. Every year 50+ teens ages 15 to 18 participate in the pro-

gram and undergo the rigorous 72-hour Life Skills Training program to become Peer Counselors. Training is conducted 4 times a year with an av-erage of 12-15 participants per train-ing. Upon successful completion of the Life Skills program, these highly trained teens then volunteer to staff the free, confidential Hotline from 3pm to 9pm, 365 days a year.

Season Passes At Regional ParksTake advantage Of The Up-coming Mild WeatherBy San Tan Times Staff

At some point in the near future, it won’t be 95 degrees by 9 AM. And when that happens, you’re gonna want to spend more time outside. Seriously, though, Arizona is coming up on six to seven months of glorious weather. We suggest getting an annual pass that is good for all the regional parks.

Annual Pass for $85• Entry via motorized vehicle or for an

individual entering non-motorized.• This pass is good at any Maricopa

County regional park, excluding Adobe Dam.

Guidelines:• Valid for one full year from the date

of purchase.• Allows the pass owner, and accompa-

nying passengers, in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle to enter Maricopa County’s regional parks.

• Pass is not transferable from person to person.

• An additional pass may be pur-chased for any member of the same household/address for $20. The addi-tional pass, although issued with a different pass number, will always be related to the primary annual pass and have the same expiration date as the primary card.

• Valid for day-use only. Does not ap-ply towards camping, fee based pro-

grams, special use permits, second vehicles or watercraft when camping or towards ramada rentals. This is not a comprehensive list, and park visitors should contact the park(s) directly for clarification.

There are also several other options, add-ons, and discounts available. For those 65 and older an annual pass is only $20 and Disabled Veteran can get an annual pass for $42.50

New for 2018, for those that live close enough to the park that they can walk, bike, or Horseback ride to San Tan Regional park, an Annual Hike/Bike/Horseback Pass is only $30. This allows you entrance to the park without a mo-torized vehicle.• This pass allows for non-motorized

Avoiding Hand In-juries At TailgatesContinued from page 6

• If you’re the favored grill master, make sure you are using the proper protective glove wear. Slight burns can be treated with antibiotic ointment and should be covered with sterile adhesive. You do not want to apply a band aid or anything that has a sticky adhesive to avoid any further damage to the burn.

• Chopping up some carrots and celery may not seem like a dangerous task but if you do encounter a minor knife injury, washing the affected area with soap and water is the best way to prevent infec-tion.

• At all costs do not pick up broken glass with your hands. Always use a broom and dust pan to avoid contact with any minor chips that could come to close con-tact with the skin.
