FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners, Today’s celebration of Epiphany means – in the original Greek – “appearance” or “manifestation”. This Solemnity is tied to the biblical narrative of the coming of the Magi from the East to Bethlehem in order to pay homage to the King of the Jews. This precise moment was the first “manifestation” of Christ to the nations; thus bringing to the forefront the universality of the salvation brought by Jesus. In fact, this call of the Gentiles (non-Jews) had been foretold by several prophets, but its completion was a mercy reserved for the time of the Messiah. It was to Him, who was also the consubstantial Son of God, that the eternal Father had made the promise of all nations for his inheritance: who being born the spiritual king of the whole world, for the salvation of all men, would therefore manifest his coming both to those that were near, and those that were afar off; that is, both to Jew and Gentile. “God, by his sheer grace, draws us to Himself and makes us one with Him.” (Evangelii Gaudium, 112) Pope Francis sees in this Epiphany of the Incarnate Word a “double movement:” in one direction, the movement of God towards the world, towards humanity; and in the other, the movement of men towards God. And this double movement, he reasons, is driven by a mutual attraction. And so we can ask ourselves: What is it that draws God? It is love for us. The summons of the Gentiles to Bethlehem to pay homage to the world’s Redeemer was obeyed by the Magi or Wise Men unlike those many others that saw that star but paid no regard to this voice of heaven, hardening their hearts against its salutary impressions, overcome by their passions, and the dictates of self-love. We need to examine ourselves and consider if we are among those Christians who, from the same causes, are deaf to the voice of divine grace in their souls, and harden their hearts, that, notwithstanding their call, their graces, and the mysteries wrought in their favor, since there are many among them who are called, but few are chosen. It was the case with the Jews, with the most of whom, St. Paul says, God was not well pleased. How contrary was the conduct of the wise men! Instead of being swayed by the dictates of self-love, they, without the least doubt, set out on their journey to find the Redeemer of their souls. Convinced that they had a call from heaven by the star, which spoke to their eyes, and by an inward grace, that spoke to their hearts, they cut off all worldly consultations, human reasoning, and delays, and postponed everything of this kind to the will of God. Neither any affairs to be left unfinished, nor the care of their provinces or families, nor the difficulties and dangers of a long and tedious journey through deserts and mountains almost impassable, nothing of all this could make them set aside or defer their journey. They well knew that so great a grace, if slighted, might perhaps have been lost forever. What do we learn from this? Thousands of others besides the Wise Men saw the brilliant light of the new star that appeared in the heavens, but these thousands were not wise with the wisdom of the Wise Men; they were wise only in their conceit. The saw only a star, but the Magi saw a star and envisaged a God. We learn that to the proud man the star is only a star; but to the wise man the star is a handiwork of God –a telltale and a revelation of something beyond. The world in those days, as in our own, was full of the worldly wise, but none of them discovered God. And why? Because the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, of healing grace and salvation, are reserved only to the humble, like the shepherds and the Magi. We learn that humility is the condition of discovering Wisdom. In the words of Archbishop Fulton Sheen: “Only the teachable find the Teacher, only the docile find the Doctor, only the humble find the Exalted. The simple souls, such as the shepherds, find God because they know they know nothing;, the really learned souls, like the Wise Men, find God because they know they don’t know everything.” May the determination, obedience and fidelity of the Magi be an example for all of us in our search for God. May our Blessed Mother help us to strive to seek the Light and keep the faith.
May God bless you! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

"If the Magi had come in search of an earthly King, they would have been disconcerted at finding that they had taken the trouble to come such a long way for nothing. Consequently they would have neither adored nor offered gifts. But since they sought a heavenly King, though they found in Him no signs of royal
pre-eminence, yet, content with the testimony of the star alone, they adored: for they saw a man, and they acknowledged a
God." ~St. John Chrysostom
