His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam presented the 28th Teacher's Day awards to 19 recipients on 24 September 2018 at the International Convention Centre.

Meritorious Teacher Award /Anugerah Guru Berjasa Dato Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Haji Kassim bin Awang Haji Lamat Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Hairani binti Pengiran Maharaja Lela Pengiran Muda Abdul Kahar Excellent Teacher Award/Guru Cemerlang Dr. Lim Chee Ming in Applied Physics, Material and Energy Science from UBD; Pengiran Haji Mohd. Wahab bin Pengiran Haji Abdullah in Culinary Arts from IBTE Kampus Sultan Saiful Rijal; Dayang Naziancina Galarido Ward in Leadership from Sekolah Rendah Sinar Matahari Dayang Norliza binti Haji Zaini in Special Education from Sekolah Rendah Pantai Berakas.

13 others received the Special Mention Teacher's Day Appreciation Award.

The year’s theme 'Guru Dedikasi Pendidikan Cemerlang’ /'Dedicated Teacher, Excellent Education',

emphasised on the need for teachers to be prepared to accept the rapid changes of global education

such as applications in info-communication technology as well as being prepared to face paradigm

shifts in education. Besides that, the knowledge and skills they impart should always be updated to

ensure students are creative, innovative and ready to explore reforms and opportunities in all

professions and disciplines as emphasised in the National Education System For the 21st Century,

SPN21 in line with the needs of the country's social and economic developments.

LIS EDUCATION IN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

During the morning session of 25 October 2018, 905 graduates of the Higher National

Technical Education Certificate (HN-Tec) and four others of Diploma Level 4 courses received

their certificates.

The afternoon session saw 632 graduates receiving their certificates. 616 received the National Technical Education Certificate (NTec) and 16 other received the Industrial Skills Qualification (ISQ) certificates. Since its transformation in 2013, the IBTE has produced four thousand, five hundred and fifty

seven graduates. The technical institution's excellence in the academic field is clearly evident

in the employability of its graduates within six months of completing their courses. According

to an employability study in 2018, the rate of marketability among IBTE graduates is 74.3

percent, an increase of 13 percent over the previous year.

In 2003 IBTE offered 8 programmes. Now it has 53 including the new NTEC CARE GIVER

(CANCER CARE) programme in collaboration with the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre

BOOK LAUNCH AND BOOK DONATION BY STATE MUFTI OFFICE

The Wakaf Ilmu or Knowledge Endowment Scheme introduced by

the State Mufti Department in 2002 continues to receive good

response in society as a platform to reap Allah's blessings in this

world and the hereafter. Since the scheme was introduced until

2017 the donors totalled 709 with the endowed book valued at

more than 89 thousand dollars.

The State Mufti launched the book titled ''Ke Arah Kesempurnaan

Ibadat Sembahyang'' and ''Wirid al-Lathif'' published by the State

Mufti Department on 25 October 2018.

The book is a compilation of Zikir and Wirid that has been delivered in a lecture by the former state

mufti, the late Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Awang Ismail bin Omar Abdul Aziz

who was the president of the Belait Youth Association (PEMBELA) in 1988. The book also serves as a

medium of answers on the role of Wirid and Zikir in youth associations during that time.

Meanwhile, the "Wirid Al-Lathif' contains wirid recitals by al-Quthub Al-Imam Barakah al-Anam Sayyid

'Abdullah bin 'Alwi bin Muhammad Ba'alawi Al-Haddad Al-Husaini Al-Hadhrami which were explained

by Allahyarham Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Dr. Haji Awang Ismail bin Omar Abdul

During the ceremony, 12 selected libraries and higher

education institutes received the books. The book 'Ke

Arah Kesempurnaan sembahyang' is a compilation

from the guidance series titled 'Irsyad Hukum' from

1996-2016.

BOOK DONATION FROM THE EMBASSY OF VIET NAM By Amalina Qayyimah Binti Hj Kassim, Asst. Library Officer Grade I, Brunei Museums

The Museums Department library aims to improve

their reference materials to provide better resources

for library patrons, particularly researchers, in line with

the Brunei Vision 2035. In support of this initiative the

Embassy of Viet Nam donated books on Vietnamese

history and culture to the department on 21 August

2018. The donation was handed over by Mr. Le Tuan

Anh, the Charge d'Affairs of the Embassy of Vietnam

to the Acting Director of Museums Mr. Haji Mohamad

Jefri bin Haji Sabli at the National Archives Building.

This donation is a welcome addition to further enhance

the library’s collection on ASEAN. The Museums

Department was the third library to receive book

donation from the Embassy after Dewan Bahasa dan

Pustaka Brunei and Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT READATHON

For the first time the Schools Department, Ministry Of Education organized such an event on Sunday

14 Oct 2018 as part of the Bandarku Ceria programme involving all school libraries.

The Readathon themed 'Banyak Membaca Cerdaskan Minda' or Lots of reading Makes the Mind Active aimed to broaden the individual's role in making a success of the reading Culture programme and gives a positive impact in the development of a mutually responsible attitude towards the need for a love of reading among the local community for the identity of the race and country.

13 sept 2018 The Ministry of Finance and Economy introduced the Companies Act (Amendment) Order, 2018 and Companies (Striking Off) Rules, 2018 which are aimed to further strengthen the Companies Act (Chapter 39) in Brunei Darussalam

15 Sept 2018 The second Brunei Rice Bowl Startup Awards winners were announced in an awards night at Progresif’s headquarters . All five startups will represent Brunei at the ASEAN Rice Bowl Startup Awards to compete at the Global Star up Awards this November in Bali, Indonesia. Al-Huffaz Management (who won Best Social Impact Startup last year) won for the second consecutive year Buycour won Best E-Commerce Startup again for second consecutive year Nuara Group won Best Business Automation Tools Startup, Creativate won Best Life Helper Startup. The Collective’s Shinny Chia, won Founder of the Year award. The Rice Bowl awards began four years ago to highlight and recognize Southeast Asian startups that are looking to solve issues faced by their respective communities. Winners of ARBSA have received over USD 100 million in pledged investment.

16 sept 2018 The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society observed World First Aid Day 2018 theme “I do not need a license to save lives” with prestigious awards to its members. The prominent Henry Dunant International Humanitarian Award of 2018 was presented to Sheikh Haji Abdul Kadir bin Abdullah. Others are Hj Morni Hj Damit-Henry Dunant Long Life Service Award 2018; Hj Mohd Hilhamd Hj Johari- Henry Dunant Young Leaders Award 2018; Ahmad Akbal Adi Yusa Hj Mohd Yussof-Henry Dunant First Aid Instructor Excellent Service 2018; Hj Mohd Suhaimi Hj Ibrahim-Henry Dunant Award For Emerging Leaders. The Society Academy will be introducing a new ‘First Aid for Child Care’ module this year.

11 Oct 2018 31 officers completed the 8th Royal Brunei Armed Forces Command and Staff Course, RBAF CSC 8 received the certificate . The RBAF CSC Commendation award went to 673 Major (Udara) Hasnul Alwe bin Haji Matassan, Royal Brunei Air Force and the RBAF CSC Overall Excellence Award went to Major Ee Pinn Hwee Joe of the Republic of Singapore Air Force. The 40-week course was jointly organised by New Zealand's Massey University.

The 45 th Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program, SSEAYP is an international youth exchange programme specifically for ASEAN countries, introduced by Japan in 1974. This is Brunei Darussalam’s 33rd participation since it first joined in 1985. The country's contingent of 28 youths was led by Awang Haji Muhammad Iqbal Fakhri bin Haji Damit, the President of Ilham Association, Deputy Secretary-General of Bersatu Association and Co-Founder of 'Hand 4 Hand BN'.

24 Oct 2018 Brunei Darussalam's first film, 'Gema Dari Menara' produced by the Religious Affairs Department for the first time was put on show commercially at the New Boon Pang Cinema on the 23rd of October 1968. In conjunction with the 50 years of its screening, on 24 Oct 2018 was held the Exclusive Replay of the Film at the Arena Cineplex, Seri Q-Lap Mall, in Kampong Kiulap. Proceeds from ticket sale and Gema Dari Menara programme book will be donated to the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans. The replaying of the film was jointly organised by the Coordinator Body of the Replay of the Film and Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Film and Theatre Evolusi Association (FITREE) and the Gema Dari Menara artists, as well as with the cooperation of Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
