“The In-Between” Classical soprano Jill Terhaar Lewis with jazz musicians Robert Lewis (saxophone) and Gerald Gregory (piano) create beautiful and distinct music that resides both in and in between the classical and
jazz genres. They will be joined by Charleston Symphony Orchestra principle cellist Norbert Lewandowski and will present a program of original songs and arrangements of both sacred and secular works, combining the lush beauty of classical chamber music with the spontaneity and adventurous harmonies of improvised jazz. As always, concerts are free, but donations are appreciated.
CELEBRATING OUR FAITH Ghouls, Goblins & Saints !
ALL SAINTS DAY
T here are many traditions that have mixed together through
the centuries, resulting in our popular celebration of Halloween. Its Christian origin is closely connected to the feast of All Saints. On that day, we honor the famous people we admire as giants of faith: people like Peter, Paul, Benedict, Scholastica, Patrick, Theresa, Francis, Clare, Mary, Joseph, and lots of others. We also honor the countless people, many of whom we have known personally - including our family and friends - who quietly, with no fanfare or publicity, lived generous, holy and faithful lives, having now gone to God.
The ancient English word “hallow” declares something holy or blessed. This is, for example, what it means in the Lord’s Prayer, “...hallowed be Thy name.” All Saints Day was for centuries called Hallow-Mass, the Mass celebrating all the saints. Halloween is a shortened form of Hallows-Eve, the evening before All Saints Day.
How did Halloween become the night that witches ride broomsticks and disembodied spirits roam the earth? As with many other celebrations, we can thank the Irish! In the ancient Celtic calendar, November 1 began the new year. Among the Celts, just as in every culture we know, the first day of the New Year, and the evening before, were times of revelry, dancing, singing, games and often generally making a fool of oneself. So it was with the ancestors of the Irish. They inherited and adopted a party spirit, including a New Year’s Eve fire, and other religious traditions inherited from the ancient Druids. While Christians honored the martyrs and certain other saints, no one is quite sure how the celebration honoring all the saints developed in the Western world. At least to some degree, it represents another of those achievements of Christian genius, successfully transforming a pagan place or festivity into an authentic, significant Christian celebration.
In many places, Halloween has again become more connected with the next day’s feast. Christian schools and homes use the occasion to remind us of the saints, including ourselves and our efforts to honor and imitate the holy people who, as the Eucharistic Prayer puts it, “...have gone before us marked with the sign of faith and now rest in the sleep of peace.”

Scripture Reflection
I n today’s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew, a lawyer among the
Pharisees again tries to entrap Jesus by asking Him the question, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest.” Jesus’ response appears multiple times in Holy Scripture, as He
says, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” The Lord then adds another that He cites as almost equally important, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Much has been written and conjectured about both of these, and often the focus is on who our neighbor is. However, there is another element of the second Great Commandment that is worthy of note, and that is loving the neighbor “as yourself.” Too often people conclude that this means that you have to love yourself first.
Most of us grasp what it means to the love the Lord with all we are, although it is nearly unattainable to accomplish. However, that second Great Commandment does not mean that it is necessary for us to love ourselves before we can love anyone else. It means, quite simply, that most of us are concerned with our own interests and our own personal situations. Jesus is telling us that just as we often think of ourselves, we need to take care and have concern for the interests of others as well.
In the familiar Prayer of St. Francis known to many Catholics, we sum up what this kind of love to which we are called really is, when we pray, “Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved, as to love.”
